Reaction To The Counterpart Abolition

Driving licence UPDATE

As the new system comes into force following the Counterpart Abolition, drivers attempting to rent vehicles vent their frustration with the teething problems.

The counterpart Abolition finally happened on Monday 8th June and although we in the industry have been aware of this for a while it seems many of the general public were not aware.

As you know from our previous posts, we have tried our best to make our customers aware of the changes, but it seems not all companies or the government have done enough to prepare for the Counterpart Abolition if you ask some car hire customers
.

Tech Problems

Other peoples frustrations are not with the Counterpart Abolition but more with the new systems in place. We see this time and time again with new systems or heavy traffic days like the ‘Black Friday Sales’, the servers used are not equipped to handle the amount of traffic. Perhaps the government didn’t realise how many people hire cars on a daily basis..

Some Are Happy About The Counterpart Abolition

For some though, it is a welcome change. I myself tend to forget my counterpart when I am travelling and although most hire companies abroad have never required it, there was always the risk of them asking and not being able to provide a car without it.

All in all we think its been a pretty standard change from the governments point of view, strange decision, not enough information and a kind of ‘just deal with it’ attitude. We think the car hire industry has dealt with it pretty well in the first few days and we will see how it goes moving forward.

If you have any questions about licence requirements then please don’t hesitate to contact one of our ‘car hire experts’.

London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks Tickets Now Available

Car Hire London

A limited number of early release tickets for the mayor of London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks celebrations will be made available in June.

The formerly free event saw ticketing introduced last year to curtail rapidly growing crowds.

People, from anywhere in the UK or abroad, will be able to book tickets, guaranteeing themselves good views of the fantastic pyrotechnic display and a better visitor experience.

The early release of tickets will be available to the public from midday UK time on June 19th at £10 per person, which covers printing, infrastructure and other costs associated with ticketing.

The main batch of tickets will be released in September.

Outgoing mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “We are planning another stunning display to celebrate New Year and showcase London around the world.

“As in 2014 you will need a ticket, as part of our efforts to ensure the event is as safe as possible, but even if you do not have one there will be plenty of fantastic celebrations going on across the capital to help non-ticketholders bring in 2016 with a bang.

“London is a special place at the turn of the year, the city is lit up and there is a sense of optimism for the year ahead.

“If you can’t get a ticket to attend the fireworks there are many other amazing events and experiences to enjoy, as long as visitors plan ahead and book in advance.”

Ticketing for London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks was brought in for the first time last year to help manage ever increasing crowd numbers heading into central London for the spectacular annual celebration.

The aim was to reduce numbers to help ensure its long term sustainability as a safe and enjoyable event.

As well as being enjoyed by revellers in the viewing areas, the internationally acclaimed display is watched by millions on television and helps promote London around the world.

2015 Events: Rugby World Cup

Rugby World Cup 2015

The Rugby World Cup 2015 is to be held between 18th September and 31st October 2015 and will be hosted in twelve venues across England & Wales.

We are entering into one of the most exciting times for English tourism and the Rugby World Cup 2015 will be intrinsic in securing England’s place as one of the most dynamic and beautiful destinations in the world.

Sport in this country is an incredibly powerful sales tool that has the power to attract millions of international visitors, and acts as an important catalyst to stimulate domestic visits from our vast home-grown fan-base.

Hosting the Rugby World Cup 2015, the third largest sporting event in the world after the Olympics and FIFA World Cup, is estimated by Deloittes to be worth £2.1bn to the British economy. It affords tourism with a tremendous opportunity, not least through building on, and securing our industry’s place as an intrinsic part of the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games. But also through the sheer scale of the tournament, with host match venues and training camps spanning the breadth of the country, spreading the opportunity for tourism far and wide.

The tournament forms a central plank of Britain’s “decade of sport”, which also includes the 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games, the 2013 Rugby League World Cup, and the 2014 Tour De France.

The Host Cities

The Rugby World Cup 2015 host cities will be spread all over England – the North, Midlands, South, West and London – making this a genuinely pan-England event. Thirteen venues have been confirmed, twelve of which are based in England. Below is the full list of the confirmed venues:

This geographical spread is a gift for our industry enabling the UK to showcase our incredible assets as a world class tourist destination as has never been done before in order to boost tourism spend, stimulate the continued growth of the English visitor economy, and create all important jobs for England.

2015 Events: Formula 1 British Grand Prix

Formula 1 British Grand Prix

Silverstone is one of the oldest races on the calendar and started life as an airfield. The end of Second World War left Britain with no major race track. An ex-farmer, James Wilson Brown, was employed by the RAC and given just two months to turn the site from a wartime airfield and farm into a race track for the first RAC International Grand Prix.

On the 2nd October 1948, an estimated 100,000 people flocked to see Luigi Villoresi drive from the back of the grid to beat a field of 22 others in his Maserati with a top speed of 72.2mph. Silverstone racing history had begun.

From the 50 races we have held here at the circuit, Alain Prost holds the record for most wins at the circuit in 1983, 1985, 1989, 1990 and 1993! Nigel Mansell is only just behind Alain with 4 wins here at Silverstone in 1986, 1987, 1991 and 1992.

The 2015 Formula 1 British Grand Prix will be held on the 05th July 2015 and visitors have an action packed week to look forward to. On top of 3 days of racing, there will be live music from MADNESS, Deacon Blue, Nik Kershaw and others as well as other activities like Zorbing, Boldogs (motorcycle display team), High Ropes, Segways and rookie rides.

Those staying for the duration will need some form of accommodation, camping seems to be the most popular as it keeps you in the mix for the whole weekend and for relatively little cost but many local hotels will be booked up already, so get your skates on and don’t miss out.

If you are visting for the 1st time then you should be looking for accommodation in the nearby towns of Whittlebury, Syresham and Towcester, or a little further afield you will find cities like Milton Keynes, Northampton and Banbury.

If you are visiting the UK for the race then why not hire a car on your arrival from any of the Eurostar stops or major airports like Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton.

Top 5 best Estate Cars of 2015

top 5 estates

Estate cars offer the best of many worlds. They’re based on regular road cars so don’t suffer the extra fuel penalty that crossovers and SUVs do – they’ll also handle better as they have a lower centre of gravity. But, thanks to the sizeable boot, estates are still much more practical than their saloon siblings.

There’s a bewildering choice of estate cars on sale, so we’ve picked out our top 5. Whether it’s for the weekly shop, for a little DIY at the weekends or you just need space to keep the kids and pets happy, our list has something for everyone.

5. Volvo XC70

xc70

No estate car top five would be complete without at least one Volvo. Estates are what the Swedish brand does best, and the XC70 is our pick of their range. Based on the V70, already a spacious and refined car, the XC70 gains a subtly raised ride height and chunkier tyres to offer a more off-road biased appearance. Best of all though, those changes contribute towards excellent ride comfort. Factor in the strong, economical diesel engines and Volvo’s reputation for safety and the XC70 makes a huge amount of sense.

4. Mazda 6 Estate

mazda6

The Mazda 6 is the stylish option in our top five, but that doesn’t mean that it lacks substance. It’s one of the most engagaing cars to drive in its class, while the petrol and diesel engines return excellent real-world fuel economy. At 525 litres, some rivals fare slightly better in the load-lugging department, but few are as nice from the driver’s seat.

3. Mercedes C-Class Estate

cclass

Those looking for the prestige of a small executive car with a little added practicality should look no further than the Mercedes C-Class Estate. At 490 litres, the boot isn’t significantly bigger than the saloon’s, but the square shape and low, wide opening make it much more usable. The added bonus is that the C-Class is quite the looker inside and out and is relaxing from behind the wheel.

2. BMW 5 Series Touring

5series

If the budget is able to stretch for the BMW 5 Series Touring, you’ll be buying one of the best all-rounders on sale today. The beautiful interior sits ahead of a 560-litre boot and the whole car oozes quality and handles fantastically. BMW’s petrol and diesel engines offer a blend of performance and efficiency very few cars can compete with. Just be careful you don’t go overboard choosing options, the price can start to get a little silly if you get too excited.

1. Skoda Superb Estate

superb

In its current form, the Superb won’t be with us for much longer, its replacement is due in September, with an estate version following soon afterwards. In the mean time, however, the current estate is still more than capable of scooping our top spot. The boot totals 630 litres – or a whopping 1,865 when the rear seats are folded away – yet the Superb maintains limo-like levels of space for rear seat passengers.
