NewsFlash Driving Licence Counterpart Updates

Driving licence UPDATE

Driving Licence Counterpart Updates 29th of May 2015

We need to clarify the fact that the rental companies won’t need your National Insurance Number (NINo).
You must know your NINo, so you can access and share your driving records with the rental company.

The paper counterpart days are numbered and Indigo Car Hire is offering to its clients the latest Driving Licence Counterpart Updates.

DVLA confirmed that from 8th of June the paper counterpart which was issued with the British driving licence will no longer be valid.

This means that the paper part of your photo card driving licence will no longer be required and in fact the government are advising they you destroy them.

If you wish to hire vehicles in the UK and Ireland you will be required to create a licence check code within 72 hours of the start of your hire. This will enable you to share your driving record with a third party, such as a car hire company or insurance broker. The unique check code will allow someone to see what vehicles you can drive, any penalty points or disqualifications, your name and the last 8 characters of your driving licence number. This licence check code can be created through the link below.

https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

To create the licence check code you need to have the following:

  • your driving licence number
  • your National Insurance number
  • the postcode on your driving licence

Due to this access code only being valid for 72 hours, you will need to be super organised before you leave for your travels! Make sure you go on-line to “Share my Driving Licence” and get your access code no more than 2 days before you pick up the car.

Therefore Indigo Car Hire advises all our customers who hold a valid British driving licence to know their National Insurance Numbers (NINo).
If the client doesn’t know its NINo , then he will not be able access and share his records with the rental company, therefore he wont be able to hire a car in the UK.
Please note that this will only affect rentals in the UK and Ireland as currently the counterpart licence is not required when you rent outside the UK.

The car rental companies will also need a valid ID (passport) and a proof of address.

You can also view your counterpart online for free using DVLA new service “View Driving Licence” which can be found at this link: https://goo.gl/gwBm0w

All you need to view your driving record online is the Driving licence number, your National Insurance Number and the postcode where your licence is registered.

5 Benefits Of Hiring An MPV

5 Benefits Of Hiring An MPV

When it comes to hiring a car, most customers tend to overlook the type of vehicle they are going to be driving and often make their decision based on the brand of the rental vehicle.

This is understandable, even I prefer commuting in a large German saloon car and probably wouldn’t consider buying a low cost people carrier from the far east, but when it comes to hiring a car I try and get the most practical vehicle possible.

You may remember last year I took the family camping to Wales, squeezing 3 children with child-seats in the back of said large German saloon was almost impossible but a problem with my car forced my hand and I had to hire a car.

We ended up with a Citroen C4 Picasso, not a huge car but I was very surprised with the amount of space inside, space is a luxury in many modern cars and is number 1 on my list of 5 Benefits Of Hiring An MPV.

1. Space

Having enough room for the 2.4 children, the dog, cat, hamster and the kitchen sink is almost impossible these days unless you want to leave all of your luggage at home. The space available in some of the larger people carriers or 7 seat MPV’s is impressive and will make some of the larger estate vehicles cower in the corner.

2. Comfort

The extra space also adds to the comfort of all passengers. That couple of inches extra leg room doesn’t seems like much but you will be thankful for it after a 6 hour trip from Yorkshire to Plymouth. A little extra room in the front so you can both rest your elbows can also avoid in car arguments, in my experience…

3. Peace & Quiet

Stopping arguments in the front is nothing compared to what can happen in the back if everyone is happy. A lot of modern MPV’s have enough toys in the back to keep Mr Magorium happy. Tri-zone climate control, tv screens, individual tables and even power points for the all important phone/tablet/console chargers.

4. Cost

Hiring a 7, 8 or 9 seat vehicle could negate the need to take 2 or even 3 cars on the same trip which could save on fuel, toll roads, congestion charges, ferry crossings ect which can all add up.

5. Usability & Visibility

Being a little higher up on the road can really improve visibility which is a great safety feature but being higher up is also great for loading and unloading the luggage and even the children into the car.

Wacky Driving Laws From Around The Globe

wacky driving laws

I had a customer on the phone the other day that advised me it was illegal to drive in Spain while wearing flip flops and that the police tend to wait in supermarkets to catch unsuspecting holiday makers out, bit harsh i thought! But it did get me thinking, what other wacky driving laws are there around the world.

In Luxembourg all cars must have windscreen wipers fitted, even if they do not have a windscreen!

In Spain if you wear glasses, you must carry a pair of glasses in the car even if you are already wearing some!

In Thailand it is illegal to drive while not wearing a shirt!

In California it is illegal to jump from a car travelling at 65mph!

In Massachusetts you will get a ticket if you are driving with a Gorilla in the back seat of your car!

In Denver it is illegal to drive a black car on Sundays!

In Manilla it is illegal to drive on Mondays if your number plate ends in 1 or 2!

In Cyprus it is illegal to eat or drink anything while behind the wheel of a car!

In Britain All Hackney carriage taxi’s must carry a bale of hay and a bag of oats at all times.

In Sweden it is illegal to drive without your headlights on, 24 HOURS A DAY!!

FYI, these have been gathered from internet research. I have no idea if they are true or not but either way, they are still pretty funny.

Abolition Of The Counterpart Licence

Driving licence UPDATE

On the 8th June 2015 the ‘Abolition Of The Counterpart Licence’ will take place. This means that the paper part of your photo card driving licence will no longer be required and in fact the government are advising they you destroy them.

Please note: if you have a paper licence issued before 1998 when the photo cards were intoduced, DO NOT destroy it.

This applies purely to the paper counter part of a licence that shows the points and convictions.

This could potentially cause a number of problems but the main one relevant to hiring cars is the fact that most suppliers request to see your counterpart before allowing you to drive away.

Surprisingly enough the government/DVLA have thought about this and created a way that you can share your information with rental companies, employers and anyone who may need to see them.

Watch this video:

As with any new system or way of doing things I imagaine there will be teething problems but as an idea i think its great and its one less piece of paper to worry about when travelling.

I look forward to the day that this happens with passports too.

Changes To The Drug Driving Laws

Changes To The Drug Driving Laws

Changes To The Drug Driving Laws in the UK came into force on the 2nd March 2015. The aim is to make it easier for drug drivers to be caught and prosecuted by the police.

It is now an offence to drive with certain drugs above a specified level in your blood, just as it is with drink driving. Sixteen legal and illegal drugs are covered by the law, including cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy and ketamine.

The limits for all illegal drugs are extremely low, taking even a very small amount of an illegal drug could put you over the limit.

The new offence will work alongside the existing offence of driving whilst impaired through drink or drugs.

Drug Driving Penalties

The penalties for drug driving are the same as for drink driving. If you are convicted you will receive:

  • A minimum 12-month driving ban
  • A criminal record
  • A hefty fine or up to 6 months in prison or both

The consequences of a drug drive conviction are far reaching and can include:

  • Job loss
  • Loss of independence
  • The shame of having a criminal record
  • Increase in car insurance costs
  • Difficulty hiring a car for 5 years
  • Trouble getting in to countries like the USA

It is illegal to drive if your driving is impaired by drugs or if you have certain drugs above a specified level in your blood.

If the police stop you and think you’re on drugs they will either test you at the roadside using a drug screening device or a “Field Impairment” test to assess your ability to drive.

If drugs are detected in your system or you are deemed impaired by drugs, you’ll be arrested and taken to a police station for blood or urine tests. If the tests show you’ve taken drugs or show a specified drug above the specified blood limits you could be charged with drug driving.

Seek Advice Before Driving

You don’t have to be on illegal drugs to be impaired to drive. Prescription or over the counter medicines can also impair your ability to drive. If you’re taking medicines, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or healthcare professional before driving. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you are not ‘impaired’ while driving.
