The Christmas period is one of the most dangerous to be on the road, not just because of the conditions. Winter Driving Conditions can be challenging for anyone. Ice, snow or even excess rain on the roads can turn any journey into a potential danger. It is often a requirement in some countries to have snow tyres or snow chains fitted when travelling in adverse weather..

This can be a little confusing as different countries have different rulings on this subject, some countries have a higher risk of snow and ice in comparison to others therefore they require stricter rules. Car Hire Auto Insurance

We got a very interesting question the other day from one of our American customers, it was about Auto Insurance coverage and what it included. Many American customers opt to take extra insurance through their credit card company which often isn’t the best idea, you will find if you read the fine print that it does not cover damage to other vehicles it only covers damage to your own hired vehicle and nothing else. Strong Winds Over Christmas

Heavy downpours and strong winds are set to batter Britain and bring the country to breaking point, or at least as far as travel is concerned. The storm is threatening to cause chaos with several weather warning issued for different parts of the country with many forecasters predicting there will be floods in the south of England and a large part of Wales. This potential hazardous weather could extend over the Christmas period.

The Met Office has predicted that wind speeds could reach as high as 80mph with the worst of it heading towards the south coast of England with sleet, snowstorms and icy conditions on the road potentially being very problematic. If you are planning to travel during the Christmas period you may need to seek alternatives as there could be many issues for both roads, rail and public transport such as buses.

It is expected that there will be very widespread train delays and cancellations across the country, Network Rail are working with other public transport companies in order to try and find replacements and alternatives. The advice is that you should make your journey as early as possible as delays may keep you longer than you expect.

Several flood alerts also means that the roads can be a danger and people are being advised to avoid flooded routes as it could mean more breakdowns, which no one wants the hassle of over Christmas. The Environment Agency are also warning people to keep a close eye on the forecast to see if there area is at risk of flooding. Also remember that if you do go through deep water to test your breaks immediately after to ensure that they are correctly working and the water hasn’t effected your stopping distance.

Since traffic is predicted to increase by 10-15% over the Christmas period all we here at Indigo Car Hire can say is to keep safe and avoid a journey if possible!

Refund For Unused Days

When you book a hire car we make sure that you are aware that will not be refunded for any unused days that you have booked it for no matter the duration. This is really inconvenient and it’s not one of our rules its one with our suppliers, it’s unfortunate but although it may seem like it’s unfair to not be given your money back when you return it early, there is good reason for it.

The reason you don’t tend to get refunds for unused days is because the rate scales, as an example if you were to book a car for 10 days it could work out similar to that of 8 days since there may be an offer on for a 10 day period, then if you were to return it after 8 days how would they be able to calculate how much you get back as you technically shouldn’t get any but if they refunded you it would have to be the rate divided by the 10 days with then giving you two days of it back. This is the issue when people return it early so thereforecar hire companies just warn people not too and to keep it for the full duration as it’s easy to do so.

We have however managed to find a supplier who will allow a refund for unused days for our customers. They do this by scaling the rate so you will only get back what the remainder of your rental period is worth as of what the current rates are.

If you want more information on this or if you are unsure about the length you are going to need your hired car that you call us directly as we can only allow refunds for unused days with one of our suppliers which we need to suite you with, so please make us aware before you book by calling +44 (0)113 880 0748 or emailing sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk.
