Top 10 City Breaks in Europe

Top 10 City Breaks in Europe

When you sit and think about it, Europe has plenty to offer when it comes to city breaks, far too many to talk about in one go but here we have the Top 10 City Breaks in Europe according to us here in the Indigo office.

There is lots to see and do which makes them firm favourites with us brits when looking for somewhere to escape to before the pressure of Christmas hits.

The internet makes planning short city break in Europe very easy but when it comes to hiring a car in one of these beautiful cities, you know who to speak to..

So in no particular order here they are, have you visited all or any of them. Have we missed your favourite?

Barcelona

Spain’s second city – although don’t let the locals here you say that – is located on the Mediterranean surrounded by hills on all sides. A busy and bustling place famous for La Ramblas, Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia and the Nou Camp stadium – home to FC Barcelona, one of the world’s most iconic football clubs.

The city packs a punch in art galleries and shopping, and has a fabulous harbour area that was redeveloped during the Barcelona Olympics to offer restaurants, bars and nightlife to entertain you into the small hours.

You can even spend some time on the beach. The city has one just a ten minute walk from the city centre, so you can combine sightseeing, and culture, shopping with topping up your tan.

Rome

La Dolce Vita. Rome is just one of the amazing short city break destinations in Italy – a country packed with more historic sites to visit than any other in the world. Famous for the Roman heritage of the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Forum, Rome draws crowds all year round to see its wealth of ancient history.

Another big draw is the Vatican – the centre of the Catholic Church which sits over the river Tiber from the Roman city, occasionally enhanced with regular appearances by the Pope. With the huge St Peter’s cathedral at its centre, this complex houses an outstanding collection of fine art in what is the smallest independent state in the world. Add to this the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain and fabulous Italian cuisine and you have lots to pack into your Roman city break to Rome.

Venice

Venice has to be one of the most romantic cities you can visit on a short city break. Set in a lagoon in North East Italy, it is made up of 177 canals, 400 bridges and 118 islands packed full of history, art and charm.

Staying in the city is a must and once the day trippers leave you can really get a feel for the place as it transforms from hustle and bustle to a calm and romantic place. The city of Venice is centred on the Grand Canal and St Mark’s Square with its beautiful cathedral, but extends out to the Lido and islands such as Murano, famous for Venetian glass making.

This destination caters for many tastes from touristy gondola rides and expensive cafes to exploring on foot around quiet districts and discovering hidden gems. But you will leave knowing that you have visited one of the most amazing places on earth.

London

We are always taking time out and jetting off in search of amazing places to visit, however, the UK is home to one of the most amazing cities in the world, London. And the home of the London Olympics 2012 showed us how much is on offer.

A city tour will take you on a whistle stop tour of historic and modern sites in the capital – Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Shard and the London Eye to name just a few. There are art galleries galore, museums for just about everything and every kind of shop you can imagaine.

And London also has incredible nightlife with world class restaurants, theatres, cinemas and music of all kinds. Factor in parks galore, river trips and lots for the entire family to get involved in and you have one of the most rounded cities to visit.

Vienna

A city that charms and seduces from scratch, but even more the longer you stay. Whether for fast-track travel or slow-paced sightseeing, and regardless of how many times you’ve been before, there’s a seemingly never-ending wealth of things to do and see throughout the year. It’s also both culturally and musically one of the richest cities in the world, and has a good, lively mix of cool cafés and bars, galleries, shops and street markets.

The cold weather between December and March shouldn’t be a damper. There are plenty of places to warm up and with street markets aglow and the ball season in full swing it’s a fun time to visit. By April milder temperatures and blooming parks and gardens get locals back outdoors.

Prague

Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and one of the busiest city break destinations in Europe. This old town of stone buildings is a UNESCO World Heritage site and you will recognise many of the vistas from Hollywood Films such as Mission Impossible.

When you are away from the crowds this is a very romantic city with its bridges over the river such as Charles Bridge, Prague Castle on the hill, Tyn Church and Wenceslas Square. Hearty European food and Czech beers keep you on the go.

Dublin

Dublin is a buzzing city to visit on a short break, it has amazing nightlife in its bars and restaurants, the famous Trinity College and the Book of Keils, the Guinness Storehouse – home to one of the world’s most famous drinks and numerous bars along the banks of the River Liffey running through the city centre.

Dublin has changed so much in recent years and now has excellent shopping, good quality eateries and some chic hotels too. And being only a short hop from the UK it is a quick and easy city to visit for the shortest of weekend breaks.

Paris

The capital of France and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It has stunning architecture, amazing food, some of the most fashionable shops, art, museums, history and a joie de vivre unique to the city. This city is such as classic that you can come back time and time again and never get bored.

And it’s not just a city of romance. You can take a city sightseeing tour to include the Eiffel Tower, the Sacre Coeur or Notre Dame, a ride on the Bateau Mouche along the Seine, a stroll around one of the many galleries of world famous art such as the Louvre or a walk in the Tuileries Gardens.

Istanbul

Straddling the Bosphorous, Istanbul makes a fantastic destination for a city break. A mixture of Europe and Asia, this city is in a beautiful setting and has an atmosphere like no other in Europe. Mosques, minarets and markets abound within a city that has been established for two thousand years. The cuisine is a heady mixture of east meets west with kebab shops and restaurants of all types. You can even enjoy a traditional Turkish bath. Contrast this with up to the minute designer shopping malls and hedonistic nightlife in the bars and clubs.

Stockholm

The capital of Sweden, Stockholm, as well as being a city, is set on water, gorgeous to look at all year round and full of trendy places to eat and shop. It’s the home of the world’s largest H&M store as well as cutting edge brands such as Acne and Cheap Monday. The city has a stunning old town called Gamla Stan, great to visit at Christmas market time as well as world class heritage attractions such as the Vasa Museum.

When you are not exploring the many islands of the city’s archipelago by boat, why not indulge in an ABBA walking tour of the city to capture the key places in the group’s history. The Swedes are friendly welcoming people and will certainly ensure that a weekend city break in Stockholm will be memorable.

Things to do in Greece

Greece has over sixty inhabited islands, numerous historic sites, idyllic beaches offering a wide variety of tourist attractions to explore. It is no wonder that Greece is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. If you plan visiting this wonderful country, our car hire experts came up with a list with things to do in Greece:

Go back in time at Parthenon, Acropolis

Today, Acropolis is one of the world’s most popular archaeological site but back then in the Ancient times it was a temple built to honor the goddess Athena Parthenos. You may enter that era when the Greek art and sculpture was at its highest point. The Acropolis is a magnificent view you shall never forget, especially if you’ll have the chance to see it illuminated at night.

Fill up your memory cards for your camera in Santorini

Santorini is one of the most picturesque island in Greece. The beautiful multicolored cliffs, the deep-blue water and spectacular sunsets will leave you speechless. Santorini is also home to two of the youngest volcanic islands in the Eastern Mediterranean: Nea and Palia. Take a tour of these smoking islands and enjoy some spectacular views of steaming lava flows.
Santorini can be easily reached by flights from Athens, cruise ships and ferry connections. There are also various ways to explore the island like cycling, ATV rentals and motorbikes.

Climb Mount Olympus

This is a worthy challenge for hikers: discovering the Greek god’s home. This is the place where Zeus mounted his throne, Hades ruled the Underworld and Poseidon rocked the seas. Feel how life blends with mythology and unlock the divine mystery of this 2,919 meters high peak that cuts the sky.

Pray at Mount Athos

Mount Athos is a mountain and a peninsula in northern Greece. The peninsula houses some 1,400 monks in 20 Eastern Orthodox monasteries. The entry into Mount Athos is strictly controlled because it is an autonomous state under Greek sovereignty and only men are allowed to enter.

Spare some time for spiritual contemplation at Meteora

The Eastern Orthodox monks found a perfect asylum here, seeking retreat from the expanding Turkish occupation. As the name translates ‘Suspended in the air’, the monasteries are accessible only by steps cut into the rock formations. The impressive view would make the climbing to the 6 remaining unique monasteries pleasant.

Sail in the endless blue seas from Greece

Greece is a sailor’s paradise. You’ll find plenty of charter companies in Athens that would make your dream come true and take you to Aegina and Hydra in a one-week sailing trip or to Mykonos and Santorini in a two-week tour. If you chose to sail from Corfu or Lefkada you can explore the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea.
Sailing from island to island, you’ll have the chance to visit fishing villages or just relax and enjoy this authentic Greek trip.

Spend crazy nights in Mykonos

Feel the vibrant and cosmopolitan atmosphere in Greek’s most vivid island, Mykonos! It used to be famous for the narcissistic and gay hangouts but now it’s a party island that seduces its holidaymakers with its frantic vibe.

Dear Watersports lovers, welcome to your paradise

You’d be more than glad to enjoy excellent facilities for water-based adventure sports such as rafting, kayaking and canoeing in Greece. On the islands are becoming more and more popular sea-kayaking and scuba diving. There are plenty of dive centers offering instruction and rental equipment in Corfu, Kalamata, Mykonos, Preveza, Rhodes, etc.

Enjoy the sun at Myrtos Beach

Myrtos has been voted 12 times as the best beach in Greece. It is world-famous for the magical turquoise and blue colors of the water. This comes in contrast with the smooth pebbles of the beach, tall cliffs and the steep mountains behind it.

Travelling Can Be More Expensive Without A Hire Car

132014 Travelling Can Be More Expensive Without A Hire Car

With the school holidays coming to a close and the time for family holidays almost over, its that time of year that those of us without children or children that are not yet in school decide to go away. There are many reasons for this but the main one is cost, we all know that travelling during school holidays is more expensive as harsh as it may seem, its a fact.

So when planning a holiday outside of the summer break what else do we do to save money? One thing that seems to pop up is deciding not to hire a car, im here today to show you how Travelling Can Be More Expensive Without A Hire Car.

When you consider all expenses of a holiday, some that are often over looked are transport costs such as airport transfers, buses, trains and taxis.

Airport Transfers

Unless you are visiting family or friends that may come and collect you, you will probably need transport from the Airport when you arrive. After checking a few of the popular websites for a typicaly family holiday, here is what I found.

Return Journey: Alicante Airport to Torrevieja, Family of 4. 01/10/2014 to 07/10/2014 = €120 Euro Best Price

Public Transport

Once at your destination, again without family or friends with a vehicle you will find yourselves geting a bus or taxi when going out for the day to the beach, waterpark or for a bit of sight seeing. Here are some basic costs I found.

Bus, Single Ticket: €1.5 Euro per person including infants for a short journey. So thats €6 Euro for the family per journey.

Taxi, Single Journey €15-20 Euro for a relatively short journey to the beach from a popular area like San Miguel to the beach at Playa de los Naufragos which is about 15km.

Train, Single Journey €30 Euro per person for a single journey from Alicante to Valencia, thats €120 Euro for the family.

As you can can see, travelling around your chosen holiday destination on public transport could add up to be quite costly. So lets have a look at hiring a car…

Small Car for 7 Days from Alicante Airport the cost on our website right now is £38.77 which is about €49 Euro. You will have to pay for a tank of fuel on top of that which would cost around €60-80 Euro. So a total cost of about €129 Euro.

A tank of fuel in a small city car like a Ford Ka could get you upwards of 600kms of driving, that is a lot of trips to the beach, shopping centres and waterparks.

Obviously my examples are specific to one area but the theory does translate to almost any trip, before you decide to travel do some research into how much basic transport will cost you and then weigh that up against the cost of hiring a car and not having to worry about any other transport costs.

You can check our website for hire car prices in pretty much any location around the world, or just pick up the phone and call +44 (0)113 880 0748 or chat with one of our experts online for a free no obligation quote.

Cape Town the City of Table Mountain

Cape Town is situated at the south-western tip of the African continent and it is called the City of Table Mountain because the whole area it’s defined and dominated by it. Robben Island, the beautiful Kirstenbosch Gardens and the spectacular Cape Point, its gorgeous assets, are making this place magical. Tourists are free to walk its streets, meet its people and fall in love with Cape Town, with its District Six Museum or Castle of Good Hope, enjoying the good weather and the outdoor lifestyle.

Cape Town the City of Table Mountain is an ideal holiday destination

Cape Town the City of Table Mountain it’s an ideal holiday destination with plenty to see and do either in summer or winter. Cape Town has to offer a wonderful setting for panoramic vistas and magnificent seascapes, being one of the world’s most iconic cities.
Cape Town is surrounded by numerous beaches, Clifton for example is one of the most known. The waters of the Atlantic Ocean are not particularly warm but they are a heaven for surfers, windsurfers and kite-boarders. It’s easy to get to Clifton Beach as it’s near the Lion’s Head promontory. This is another prominent feature you can see from down in Cape Town. It was named Lion’s Head because its shape resembles a crouching lion or a sphinx. It’s worth walking to the top of it for some spectacular views.

You might want to drive to Gansbaai near Hermanus and then onto Dyer Island where you can surface view, snorkel or scuba dive (scuba dive certificate required) here, where the great white shark in its natural environment! All the necessary equipment would be provided.

The peak summer season is generally during between mid-December and early January. But many tourists prefer the hot months of February and March. Anyway, the sunset’s lovers should come in April to contemplate spectacular views, when the light is softer and the temperatures are balmy.

The best time of year to explore the slopes of Table Mountain on foot is between May and July, when the temperate winter starts. Also if you want to witness the best land-based whale-watching in the world, you’ll be able to do this until November. This is the time when the southern right whales migrate to calve and nurse.

No matter when you chose to visit Cape Town you should know that your vacation wouldn’t be complete without a cable-car trip up Table Mountain. The cable-car rotates 360º during the ascent, and once at the top is offering you fantastic views of the city.

A signifying part of the port area has been redeveloped into The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, which has become a symbol of the new South Africa and has a huge variety of shops, restaurants and entertainment opportunities. This place is also the main departure point for visits to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated and where you can take a tour of the prison and the cell left exactly as it was.

Given the above, it would be highly recommended to hire a car for a few days, if not for the whole duration of your stay. This can be arranged from Cape Town International Airport before you arrive. You’d be happy to know that the road infrastructure is excellent and road signs are of the highest international standards. Road rules include driving on the left side of the road (are identical to UK), the traffic outside of rush hour is relatively uncongested, parking is easy and even Table Mountain is helping because the ever-present mountain is a great aid to navigation.

New Changes To Sixt Young Driver Fee UK

sixt young driver

One of the largest suppliers of rental cars in the UK, Sixt have recently changed their policies when it comes to hiring a car if you are under 25.

For a while now we have had a brilliant arrangement with them which meant our customers aged 23 & 24 could hire from any Sixt location without a young driver surcharge. People of 21 & 22 years of age could also rent a vehicle but there was a pretty hefty fee of £30 per day.

New Sixt Young Driver Fees UK

The Sixt young driver fees in the UK have changed which impacts drivers under 25 & means that although you can still hire a vehicle, anyone aged 21-24 will be liable for the daily charge which has increased from £30 to £36 per day.

This will mean a weeks rental for example will be £252 on top of the price of the rental itself.

Here is the Good News

Sixt are not the only supplier in the UK that offer car hire services for young drivers, we have other suppliers dotted around the country that will allow people as young as 21 to hire a car, and although there is a daily surcharge for anyone under 25, it is nowhere near as expensive as the fee mentioned above.

These suppliers also offer other deals which appeal to our younger customers like, low deposits, pay with a debit card and reduced excess amounts.
