Taking A Hire Car Overseas

Taking a hire car overseas

With the cost of international travel increasing and actual ‘low cost’ flights being almost non existent these days more and more people are deciding on self drive holidays and Taking A Hire Car Overseas. We have covered in the past that we have suppliers who will allow there vehicles to be taken abroad providing they are returned to the same location.

But, how do you go about arranging international travel in a hire car?

I recently booked the ferry from Dover to Calais and the first problem I encountered is the field asking me for a vehicle registration number… Stumped, you dont know the reg number until you pick the car up. I called the sales hotline and they said I could just add ‘HIRE CAR’ in that field and it will allow me to complete the booking.

When I returned from my trip I decided to investigate further, I looked at all kinds of sites for the ferries and the Eurostar and they are all prety much the same, some do have a tick box asking if the car is a rental which is helpful.

Another problem you may come across is the size of the vehicle slot you have booked, the cost to take a small car on the ferry or Eurostar is less than if you are driving a large family car or 4×4. Rental companies are renowned for selling out of the popular vehicles and providing larger vehicles as replacements, for example I once booked a small city car for a couple of days and ended up with a large estate car.

This will cause you problems, always ensure that you inform your broker or the supplier direct that you intend on taking the vehicle on the ferry/Eurostar, this will prompt them to try harder to provide the right vehicle for you.

Infact, you should always advise them when booking that you intend to take the vehicle out of the country as the supplier will need to arrange additional insurance and breakdown cover for you. This sometimes comes with an additional cost.

If you would like more information about this then please dont hesitate to contact us direct, you can call +44 (0)113 880 0748, chat with us online or email us on sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk.

Car Rental Fort Lauderdale Airport With A Debit Card

Fantastic news for those travelling to the USA this summer, especially Florida. We have just secured another supplier that will accept bookings for Car Rental Fort Lauderdale Airport With A Debit Card.

This is big news as they are the only supplier that we deal with that will allow this at Fort Lauderdale (Hollywood) Airport, before now we would have had to send our customers to other locations for them to collect their car if they did not hold a credit card.

There are a few restrictions in place when using a debit card, to check your card complies with these, please contact us.

There is a deposit to pay or rather have frozen on your card, its $250 USD which at the moment is about £150 GBP, this is very low compared to some other suppliers and this amount is released back on to your debit card when the vehicle is returned.

To take advantage of this service, please contact us by phone on +44 (0)113 880 0748, chat with us online or drop us an email at sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk. Do not book online as we cannot guarantee you will get the correct supplier.

Do You Really Need Additional Extras, Part 1 – GPS

gps

We at Indigo Car Hire spend all of our time arranging the best deals available for our customers but somethings that are often overlooked are the costs of additional extras. While we always try to get the best price for the car and any extras that our customers may need, sometimes the need is not always apparent at the time of booking.

In part 1 of our cost saving blogs we are looking specifically at GPS systems or Sat Navs..

Sat Navs can be essential for many foreign visitors looking to navigate there way around the United Kingdom, there was a time before GPS technology that suppliers would sell road atlases which were a fantastic source of revenue for them, much like GPS’s are today.

Car Hire suppliers can charge anything from £10 to £18 per day to hire one of these, some companies may cap the amount charged in any given rental period to between £100 and £150. Others some will simply charge on a daily basis with no cap, so for those that are visting for a prolonged period of time, the costs can mount up.

We can use Heathrow as an example, being the busiest airport in the UK it sees a vast amount of long haul travellers coming through its arrivals halls. not only does it have plenty of shops offering consumer electrical goods there are also a number of large supermarkets within a mile or so of the terminals.

Looking at one of these well known supermarkets websites, we saw a standard UK GPS system on sale for £74, we are sure you could find one cheaper than that if you looked further. So if you are hiring for more than 7 days then there is a real saving to be had by buying and not renting.

The bonus being that after your rental, you have a GPS system to do with as you please, sell it on to a friend, someone you see in the queue when you return to the airport or even sell it online, keep it for a future trip or simply be a good samaritan and give it away to someone that may need it.

Yes this saving does come with a little effort but the benefits can be great, if you have booked your car with a low cost supplier for 2 weeks and then at the last minute decided to hire a GPS system, it could double the cost of your rental..

Look out for part 2 of our cost saving tips, coming soon!

Low Cost Family Fun In The UK

Low Cost Family Fun In The UK

After recently publishing an article about family days out it was brought to our attention that our suggestions were all a little bit on the pricey side for the average family with 2.4 and a dog…

So, this got our juices flowing and we decided to dig out the best venues for Low Cost Family Fun In The UK. Here are the top 5 we could find.

5: Wilderness Wood, East Sussex

A unique family-run working woodland park in the beautiful hills of the Sussex High Weald. Explore a network of trails around their 62 acres of award-winning continuous cover ancient woodland. Follow a 1.25km self-guided trail to see some of the woods most interesting features, or a shorter easy-access trail more suitable for buggies and pushchairs. Or simply follow your nose and ramble wherever the mood takes you! There is a lot to see and do here and all for around £15 for a family ticket.

4: Spitalfields City Farm, London

A great destination for a family day out. A registered charity, the farm provides something for all the family. In the farmyard, you can meet a whole range of animals, children can learn where eggs and milk come from, and you can participate in workshops on dairying, healthy eating and sustainability. The farm is free to visit although they do rely on donations to stay open, so if you do decide to visit and you have a great time then why not make a donation.

3: Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham

The park is an ideal venue for families, with children’s play areas and boats for hire on the lake in the summer. There are plenty of picnic areas and refreshments are available at the Garden Tea Rooms. For the active family there are tennis courts, mini golf and a Tree Walk which starts at Information Point in the The Garden Tea Room. The park is free but some activities do come at a small cost.

2: Brimham Rocks, North Yorkshire

An amazing collection of weird and wonderful rock formations which makes a great day out for families, climbers and those wanting to enjoy the simple pleasures of fresh air and magnificent views over Nidderdale. Let your imagaination run wild as you explore the labyrinth of paths through this unique landscape.

1: Sandy Lane Aqua Park, Cheshire

The Aqua Park includes around 10 pieces of water equipment operated by sensory, touch pads. These are in place in the summer months and are replaced by play equipment in the winter period. In the summer there is a small shop selling ice creams and drinks. Tie this in with a walk along the river Dee, a boat trip and a picnic and you have a great day out with the family. The bonus is the cost the water fun and activity park is free, the boat trips are £1pp return and if you take a picnic, there is no additional costs for refreshments.

There are many more attractions offering Low Cost Family Fun In The UK, some of which im sure we will write about soon. The costs mentioned above are for access to the attraction only and other costs that should be considered are travel costs, parking charges and refreshments. With all of these included we think the above attractions offer great value for a fun family day out.

Choosing The Right Size Hire Car

Choosing The Right Size Hire Car

What Size Hire Car Do You Need? – Choosing The Right Size Hire Car

When Choosing The Right Size Hire Car we need, at the time of booking the main thing we usually consider is the price for obvious reasons. But sometimes booking the cheapest car available is not always the best option.

Booking the wrong hire car because it is easier on the purse strings can end up costing more in the long run, if you turn up to collect your vehicle and your party and luggage cannot fit in the vehicle then you have a problem.

You could upgrade the vehicle there and then but this would be dependent on availability, larger vehicles are less likely to be sat around waiting to be hired because rental companies generally have less of these on their fleet.

Then you have to consider the cost of a last minute upgrade. Booking a larger car in advance generally would be a cheaper option than booking a smaller hire vehicle and then upgrading on the day.

Then again you could be one of the lucky customers who are given a free upgrade automatically because the hire vehicle they booked is no longer available, although this is not something we would advise you hope for ?

There are certain things that a hire company have to guarantee, like the size of vehicle and its engine, the number of doors, if it has air conditioning, manual or automatic and even sometimes the fuel type.

If the company allows you book any of the above specific options then they are basically guaranteeing that your vehicle will come with what you have selected. If you turn up to collect the vehicle and it doesn’t have the diesel engine or 5 doors that you have booked then you are entitled to an upgrade the next available vehicle that has the options that you selected.

Sometimes if a hire company finds themselves in a situation where they do not have the vehicle they need for your hire, they will try and sell you an upgrade before telling you, they will say ‘Hi Mr. Smith, did you know you can upgrade your car today for only £5 per day’ if this happens to me I say NO every time because the likelihood is that you will be given that car anyway.

Here are some tips on Choosing The Right Size Hire Car

Research The Vehicle Type

No car hire company can tell you exactly what vehicle you are going to receive until much closer to the time you are due to collect it. This is mainly down to logistics, hire vehicles move around the country on a regular basis.

When booking the vehicle you will be told a particular model OR SIMILAR, this means if you are booking a Peugeot 107 OR SIMILAR then you could receive a Peugeot 107, Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo, Hyundai i10 or any one of many other Small city cars that are available.

Most rental companies use SIPP codes which are used to summarise the key features of a vehicle, click here to see our guide to SIPP codes.

Are you moving home/office and need more space?

If so then you may want to consider hiring a van rather than a car or an estate. See our tips on hiring a van here.

Are you going on a family trip?

If so then you will probably be looking at hiring a people carrier of an estate vehicle. People carriers come in a number of different shapes and sizes:

A Mini MPV, sometime referred to as a 5+2. This means that although they have 7 seats, 2 of them are fold up seats (suitable for children) situated in the boot/truck of the vehicle. Always bear in mind that if you are going to occupy all 7 seats then there will be minimal room for luggage.

A Standard MPV, 7 Seater. This vehicle will generally have 7 proper car seats with 3 point seatbelts that will be suitable for adults and children. They generally have more space then the Mini MPV again if you are going to occupy all 7 seats then you will struggle to get 7 large pieces of luggage in too.

An Estate, Wagon. This group of vehicle will always have 5 seats and loading space in the back. For a family of 5 with luggage this would be the ideal vehicle.

A Large MPV, Shuttle Bus. These vehicles are generally ‘vans’ with seats in the back and can have 8, 9 or 12 seats. They generally have more space for luggage. Please bear in mind that these vehicles are quite rare with most suppliers so be sure to enquire well in advance of your rental needs.

You don’t have a car for day to day life but need one for a short period of time?

There are many standard vehicles available for hire of between 1 and 28 days. Ranging from small economy hatchbacks right through to large saloon vehicles and prestige/sports cars. Obviously the further up the range you go the more expensive the rate will be. So always consider the following.

Am I just looking for practicality?

If you are just looking for something for yourself and your partner to go away for the weekend, then you will probably find that the small economy vehicles will do, they have small engines and a little amount of space but ideal for a quick blast to the spa with an overnight bag.

Do I need the car to have 4 doors or will 2 be ok?

If you have kids or are planning to take an elderly relative out for the day then you may want to consider 4 doors, it makes life so much easier when getting in and out of the back seats.

How many miles will I be travelling?

If you are planning a longer trip, again you may want to consider a larger vehicle, motorway miles can be quite tiring in a smaller engined car, having to change gear much more often and the once good fuel economy usually flies out of the window when doing long motorway journey. So a larger car with a bigger engine would make the journey that little bit more comfortable and usually more economical.

Is it for business purposes? Hiring a vehicle for business purposes can be straight forward but some issues can arise, so always make sure you discuss your requirements with someone over the phone. In our experience when people are hiring a car for work purposes they usually want to use their managers/directors credit card and this is not acceptable with some hire car suppliers.

Can I drive a manual?

Even if you are used to driving an automatic vehicle, if you do have a valid licence to drive a manual vehicle and are comfortable doing so then it can be advisable to hire a car with a manual transmission. The biggest reason being cost: Automatic vehicles do come at a premium and can sometimes double the cost of your hire. The secondary reason being availability, in the UK and most European countries, automatic vehicles are quite rare and availability is low.

Do I need air conditioning?

Most hire vehicles nowadays will have air conditioning, but some of the smaller groups and economical vehicles may not. If you only need to hire a small vehicle but are considering a larger vehicle because it has air conditioning then consider the following: There are probably 3 months out of the year (in a good year) that you will need air conditioning, and even during this time it is not guaranteed. Sometimes opening the window will do a good enough job.

Package Deals

I have just had to book some flights with a well known operator based in Leeds for a jolly boys outing in February next year. There are 12 of us travelling and it struck me as to how much this particular operator would stand to make if none of us actually read the terms of the Package Deals before we clicked next, next, next…

The flights cost £135 per person with a 10kg allowance for hand luggage, here are a list of the extras i was offered and had to click NO to:

  • 22kg suitcase allowance £15 each way, so if i want to take clothes with me it costs an extra £30
  • Airport check in £20 each way, stand in a queue for an hour and get a piece of paper telling me which seat to sit in an extra £40
  • Horrible in flight meal £6.50-£11.50 each way
  • Pre booked seat £10 each way, so an extra £20 to pick where i sit on the flight even though every seat is the same (extra leg room seats excluded)
  • Single trip insurance £10, which if you read the fine print means you are no better off than travelling with no insurance. I do recommend travel insurance but you can find much better cover for a better price if you look around.

So, an extra £123 per person, thats £1,476 of pointless expense just from our group alone.

The one that really took the biscuit was the offer of discounted car hire, at the end of the process I was offered a 20% discount on car hire for my trip with their preferred supplier, a supplier that we at Indigo also use. I was intrigued to see what kind of deal was on offer so I followed the instructions.

For our 3 day trip to Budapest I was offered a small city car for £85.92 including my discount for being a customer of this particular airline, a tad expensive I thought.

I did exactly the same quote on the Indigo website and was offered the same car with the same terms with the same supplier for £51.93.

Why are airlines allowed to get away with this? Someone who doesn’t travel regularly or know a bit about the industry like I do would have been taken for a ride here.

My advice, when booking Package Deals like flights, car hire or holiday insurance speak to someone who knows more about the subject than you may do. Dont get suckered in by flashing images offering you discounts if you ‘Book Now’ and read everything before clicking ‘Next’.

Best US Destinations

best us destinations

The USA is a massive place and there are many sites to see within each state, with each city being extremely unique. Are you planning a holiday but can’t decide where to go? Well here are our Best US Destinations.

Las Vegas, Nevada

I’m pretty positive you would have heard of Las Vegas in the past as it’s almost a household name, often considered the best nightlife I would disagree, why? Because Las Vegas is open 24/7 the same things that happen at night happens in the morning, a popular place for Casinos, Nightclubs and infamously quick marriages. This holiday is suitable for 21 years old or over.

Chicago, Illinois

Chicago is a huge city with several distracting bright lights, its main attraction is through historical means with several museums including Science and industry, it also is home to the largest Science museum in the Western Hemisphere, pretty impressive. The city is beautiful with several things to do, it’s the largest city in Illinois. This holiday is suitable for everyone but young families as it’s a large and busy city.

San Francisco, California

Don’t let the always foggy San Francisco put you off there is just so much to do in San Fran you will never run out of things to do. During the day you can explore the Aquarium of the bay or even ride a cable car, stroll around the presidio or explore Fisherman’s Wharf. By night? Explore the variety of Michelin-Star restaurants then after your stomach is full you can hit some of the best clubs that America has to offer. This holiday is suitable for both families and couples with the day and night offering such variety of things to do.

Orlando, Florida

You would of heard of Orlando and most likely in the same breathe as the word theme parks because well there’s tons of them. Walt Disney has designed his little empire of theme parks in Florida along with several other none Disney related ones. Not into theme parks? Oh there’s more, hot balloon rides, indoor skydiving, Parasailing or just visiting the city. Orlando is perfect for everyone it’s got so much to offer and that’s why it has made second in the list.

New York City, New York

You knew it would be, it’s always first and for valid reasons. New York is truly the city that never sleeps with something always happening, but what can you do in New York? Well… Visit the Statue of Liberty or tap into history through Ellis Island, get scared of heights on top of the Empire State Building or see the iconic Times Square, not enough yet? Well you could also go down the world famous shopping high street with shops like the original Adidas and Macy’s or visit Planet Hollywood for a bite to eat and then travel round the corner to Broadway. You just simply won’t have enough time in New York City, I lived there for a year and still never went to the top of the Empire State Building, which I very much regret.

Matt Runs The Leeds Half For St Gemmas

matt carter (1)We feel this is worth a mention, Matt Carter one the Mangers here at Indigo Car Hire has again taken part in the Leeds Half Marathon raising much needed funds for St Gemma’s Hospice.

Matt commented ‘This is the 8th year running I have completed the event and can safely say this year was the hardest of all those years – I think with a combination of a 5 month old and 5 year old daughter at home, it has meant training was at a minimum, and my completion time of 2.09 reflected this. However it is the people at places like St Gemma’s (and there are many other places like them) that provide the inspiration to keep on running and simply get through’

Matt raised a total of £93.00 for St Gemma’s which adds to the company total which can be seen by clicking here.

Double Deal At Florence Airport

As you may have already noticed hiring a car anywhere in the world including within Italy can be a tricky task as majority of companies require you to possess a credit card. Here at Indigo Car Hire we are well known for arranging great deals specifically deals to do with alternative payment options and one of our recent tasks had been to arrange this deal at Florence Airport, a popular Italian airport that gets around 2 million passenger through its gate from locations all over the world.

Being a busy airport in terms of passenger traffic that also correlates with car hire so we felt it appropriate to try and arrange some offers here for our customers. After some time we managed to contact a company at the airport willing to take debit cards given that you meet the criteria. To find out if your card will be accepted, please contact us.

That’s not all however, along with being able to supply car hire without a credit card we also managed to arrange a low deposit deal with the supplier. Typically when you hire a car the deposit is between 500-1000 EU in Italy, however we have managed to get this supplier down to a 300 EUR deposit, far lower than the standard.

If you are interested in hiring a car at Florence airport but don’t have a credit card and are looking for the bonus of a low deposit then don’t hesitate to get in contact with our reservation agents. You can contact them by calling +44 (0)113 880 0748 or emailing sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk.
