How Long Does It Take To Get An International Licence?

How Long Does It Take To Get An International Licence? When hiring a car in another country you are often required to have an international licence. The reason for this is that your licence may be in another language therefore it’s hard to identify for the car rental company if the information on the licence is correct. If your licence is from inside the EU then its fine.

One of the problems we often find with this is that people are unsure whether they actually need one or not as the confusion is caused because you don’t actually need an international licence to drive in the UK but in order to hire a car, you do and several of these unsure people leave it until the last minute to call us.

With so many people leaving it until the last minute the worry turns to whether you can actually get an international licence in this short period. One example we had was a Kenyan customer arriving into Heathrow who left it until the last minute, he applied for a licence and got it that day, although this was an exceptionally quick return and on several locations it takes longer than this but it’s often not as long as people think.

We suggest that you check on your countries government website as they have several FAQs about applying for international licences, one of which is the time it will take to apply and receive your new international licence.

In order to be able to pick up a car if you aren’t based inside the EU or a country which has a driving licence written in English then you need to present your valid driving licence for your company and a valid international licence.

Despite the turn around time being quite quick we urge you to get your car booked as soon as possible so we can sort any possible issues well in advance. If you have any questions about international licences or just car hire in general then please ask our experienced reservation agents on +44 (0)113 880 0748 or email us at sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk.

No Young Driver Surcharge South West England

Although hard to find due to most suppliers having an age limit of 25, there are a few companies such as ourselves which will allow for young drivers to be accepted in several locations across the United Kingdom. One of the locations we have been particularly focusing on recently has been on the south western part of England for example Truro, Falmouth, Plymouth and Torquay where areas that we specifically wanted to further arrange deals.

We have previously mentioned on the website that we can allow young drivers from the age of 21 throughout the most of the United Kingdom, but here we have gone one step further. When hiring a car as a young driver you often get charged a young driver additional surcharge which can be as high as £39 per day on top of the price of your rental which for many just isn’t an affordable option.

We contacted a specific company we work very closely with in that area and eventually managed to arrange a fantastic deal that meant there was NO YOUNG DRIVER SURCHARGE for our customers meaning a massive amount of saving on your typical car hire. This is available in several of the south west locations where they are based, however they also do a meet and greet service dependent on the length of the rental.

Being a young driver however you will be limited to the vehicles that you can get, and the company that we have arranged the deal in this particular case are a Toyota dealership meaning that they just supply Toyota vehicles, and for young drivers there will only be the Yaris vehicles.

Since this is such as tailored offer for young drivers in south west England we require that you please call us so we can contact the branch directly in order to get you booked in. You can contact our expert reservation agents on the phone +44 (0)113 880 0748 or email sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk, don’t worry their friendly!

Delivery and Drop Off To B&Bs

In our experience over the years in the car hire industry we have noticed there are different type of “renters” those who have the car for the full duration of their holidays and those that plan to just use it to get from the airport to their destination whilst taking advantage of our free one ways of course, have their holiday and then hire a car to get back to the airport. Although this may not be the exact case, we have had an increase in the amount of requests into whether we can pick up and drop off at Bed and Breakfasts.

We can allow delivers to hotels as well as B&Bs however the service of this is limited and it’s all dependent upon the length of your rental. The reason for this is that suppliers don’t see it as a profitable exercise for example just to deliver for a one day rental which when you consider the staffing delivery costs, fuel etc is understandable.

Most B&B locations are located in popular tourist areas meaning they are often close to car hire branches, if you are only hiring for a few days then please just contact us and we will give you the best options we can find available for you. It’s often not a long distance to the car rental office and that little walk could save you a lot of money and hassle, so it is often worthwhile.

This is quite a personalised service as there are thousands of bed and breakfasts/hotels across the United Kingdom, therefore in order to check for you personally we ask that you contact us directly by calling +44 (0)113 880 0748 or emailing us at sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk, our experienced reservation agents will be happy to answer any questions you may have and get you booked in, essentially making the whole process easier for you.

New UK Licence To Deter Fraud

The DVLA (Driving and Vehicle licensing agency) have announced that they are introducing a new photo card driving licence within the United Kingdom. Just like its predecessor it is also the size of a credit card so in terms of size it won’t change, the photocard licence contains a variety of information including the holders full name, date of birth, the vehicle types that the holder is entitled to drive and the period that the licence is valid as you have to renew your photo card every 10 years for identification reasons. Doesn’t seem like much is changing?

Well the changes are more to defer fraud, what they are doing is raising the picture of the licence holder by engraving several layers of the surface in order for it to become harder to replace the picture on a licence. It will be raised to the touch much like that of an embossed debit card, the picture won’t be able to be alter as easy as previous licences as trying to do so will damage the card deeming it invalid, driving licences are commonly forged which is obviously an issue the DVLA take very seriously and this is an attempt to tackle the problem head on, but will it work or will fraudsters find a way around it?

You can request for your licence to be changed to this and some motorists will just be sent the newly issued licence it will also be given to people who have had a change in circumstance like a move of address or change of name as well as those who have an expired licence. You are however not obliged to upgrade to this new card so don’t expect everyone to have it until all the current photo card licences expire.

The photocard was first introduced in 1998 and since has not had too many revisions, and this is going to be one of the major ones although it is sticking to the same format.

Toyota’s Exciting New Technology

A new announcement by the car manufacturer Toyota has not only got car fans excited but also tech fans as they announce they are testing a new wireless batter charging system which has been developed for their vehicles. If there testing is proved a success then so called plug in vehicles would be a thing of the past as cars will simply be able to park and charge with minimal hassle, it will be a major breakthrough.

There will be no need for any connectors or cable, the car would park on a coil set which is in the surface of the ground which will automatically charge it. The design is to ensure that there is a reduced loss of any power transmission efficiency, measures have been taken to reduce electromagnetic interference and also they have made it so that the coils can withstand being driven over (for those of us that aren’t the best at parking).

Although that may be made a lot harder with Toyota’s new Intelligent Parking Assist System which shows you exactly the position of the coils to make parking in the right position to charge even easier. We could be seeing these technologies introduced in the near future in both Toyota and Lexus vehicles across the UK.

Some people are sceptical about how much benefit this will actually have as many don’t see an issue with plugging the car in, but I’m optimistic as it’s a step in the right direction. So called green hybrid/electric vehicles need that extra boost they need to change something as although they have increased sales in recent years its nothing too significant, most people don’t get a green vehicle due to the lack of charge points in the UK meaning any change can only be a more positive thing.

Top 5 Estate Cars

Estate cars are particularly popular in the car hire industry, there are obvious reasons for this as many of the people that tend to hire cars do so after flying meaning they may be carrying a considerable amount of luggage, making estate cars the smart choice. When it comes to estate cars however, who are the leaders in the market? Here is a breakdown of our personal opinion of the top 5 estate cars…

Skoda Octavia Estate

With up to 74.3 miles per gallon the Octavia is popular due to its cost effective approach in saving fuel whilst still providing a ton of room. The well-equipped interior makes it even more attractive, its one of the most popular cars on the road now a days for a reason. Literally the only con with the Skoda is it has been labelled as slightly dull to drive.

Mazda 6 Tourer Estate

Not as popular as the Skoda but still does the job with its stylish exterior and interior design spacious and comfortable seating with a large amount of space. Unlike the Octavia many label the Mazda 6 as fun and easy to drive, but the con I suppose about the new models of the Mazda 6 tourer is that its predecessor had slightly more boot space.

BMW 3 Series Touring Estate

With a large loading bay it’s also a popular vehicle as many people can comfortably fit their luggage in with minimal squeeze, it has some great practical features as well as caring the BMW badge meaning it has an excellent performance and handing. However the only con to it that some people outline is it just isn’t as refined as its rivals.

Volvo V70

The long heritage of Volvo gives it its edge, the V70 is known for its reliability, comfort and safety as well as its nice shape. It has generous standard equipment which is always good for when you are hiring a vehicle, the only criticism of it is that sometimes the ride is choppy with vague steering especially with town driving.

Ford Mondeo Estate

The boot is absolutely massive, some would even dare to say it’s too big. The Mondeo has a nice drive, good handing and is decent economically. Both the diesel and petrol engines are strong on this car so it delivers some kick, the critic however is that sometimes the Mondeo is too big making it a bit daunting to drive but if you are used to driving large cars then this is perfect.

Car Hire Luggage Space

Car Hire Luggage Space is an important aspect people take in consideration when hire a car. When it comes to hiring a car one thing we find is that people are often unsure of the type of car suitable for them. This is largely down to the amount of luggage that you have, your hired car may be unfamiliar to you especially if you aren’t a keen follower of cars. We are here to help advice you and below you can find some information on what cars would be suitable for the amount of luggage that you have.

2 Suitcases –
Ford Ka or similar: Anything in this range will be fine for around 2 suitcases possibly more if you don’t have the full passenger capacity however the boots on these MINI group cars tend to be very small so if you want to have a comfortable time, no more than 2.

3 Suitcases –
Vauxhall Corsa or similar: The economy group cars are slightly larger than the mini with an average estimated space enough for 3 suitcases, the boots are larger than that of a mini but they are still below average size.

4-5 Suitcases –
Skoda Octavia or similar: Even larger is the standard/intermediate vehicle which can carry between 4 and 5 suitcases as they have an average sized boot. It’s suggested for 4-5 suitcases however I think you could fit 6 in at a push without much of an issue.

5-7 Suitcase –
Volkswagen Passat Estate or similar: Estates are specifically designed to in order to fit a large amount of suitcases with a large boot being the edition to a standard car. Estates are great for family of 5s with a large amount of luggage.

7 + Suitcase –
There are a variety of different vehicles which you would benefit from depending, there are 5+2 seaters available which are slightly smaller in space than your standard 7 seaters and after that if required there are vans and even 14-17 seater vehicles which fit a very large amount of luggage.
