It’s often confusing the full ins and outs of hiring a car with a tow bar as there are many regulations, rules and only a handful of locations that we offer this service. In order to help our customers and potential customers this blog is about the full details for towing vehicle hire, it’s important to know all the full details before going to hire the car with a tow bar as it can often have legal complications as there are so many rules regarding tow bars.

In order to hire a car with a tow bar you must be the age of 25 or over and have two years driving experience. The general cars we hire out that are fitted with a tow bar are 4x4s, Pickup trucks and other larger vehicles. If you want to know the full ins and outs and requirements as well as if you have preference to what vehicle you want in order to tow your desired object then please call the Indigo reservations team and they will be able to explain it to you in full.

There are several outlined regulations outlined in order for you to be suitable to tow and if you break these rules then you are running the chance of being prosecuted by the police.

Tow bar Type

You don’t necessarily need to worry about this as its down to the car hire company as they have fitted the tow bar, however its good information to know. It’s basically meaning it needs to be Type approved, the tow bar needs to be suitable for the type of car you have, the tow bar should have on it an approval number and details of the suited vehicle, it’s always good to check for this in case.

Towing Mirrors

Some people may to realise in order to tow you must have suitable towing mirrors, majority of the time the car mirrors aren’t enough and you need to add extensions to them in order for them to meet the adequate width. If your mirrors aren’t deemed as suitable for the size you are towing then you can be prosecuted by the police, fined up to £1,000 and given three points on your licence.

Trailer Brakes

Small trailers brakes are optional, however if your trailer is over 750 kilograms it must have its own braking system or else you could be on the wrong side of the law and also be prosecuted by the police.

Weight and Width Limits

The amount your car can tow is in the specifications of each vehicle in the handbook, this is hard to outline an amount per car as every car is different. The maximum width that any trailer can be however is 2.55 Metres and the absolute maximum length is 7 metres before hiring your car you should always make sure it’s suitable to tow what you want to tow.
