Can Rental Cars Be Driven Into Europe?

rental cars to drive into Europe

Can rental cars be driven into Europe?

A lot of people lately have been choosing to drive into Europe themselves for their holiday, rather than going through the hassle of flying – of course, it is much more beneficial to rent a car for this rather than taking your own, so you can have something that better suits your needs and the luggage you need to take.

Why not just fly instead?

There are numerous benefits to arranging your holiday this way, one of the primary ones though is avoiding the hassle of flying! It also allows you to plan your trip around the journey itself and gives you more control over your holiday. This is especially true if you need something more specialist, such as a van to help you move cross country, or a rental car with tow bar if you’re going caravanning for example. Luckily, we have recently managed to secure a deal to allow you to take a wide range of vehicles throughout almost all of Europe.

What countries am I able to drive in to?

There are surprisingly very few limitations on this, you can take it almost all European countries, either over land or ferry:

[table id=419 /]

What cars are available to take cross-border?

There are no limits on the type/size of car you can take, we’ve recently even struck a deal to allow 9-seat minivans to be taken cross border, so there are options for larger families or just those who pack heavy! We have options for more niche vehicles as well, such as 4×4’s and pickup trucks with tow bars (great for caravanning), commercial vans and a large fleet of prestige vehicles too.

What are the available pickup points?

There are pickup points all across the country for a majority of the cars, some of the more specialist vehicles are a little more limited but they are still available in almost all the major cities.

Just make sure you contact us directly if you are looking to arrange this option as it can’t be booked online, you can either call us on 01138800748, email us to sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk or just click the online chat button below to discuss with one of our agents.

Top 5 Family Attractions in Yorkshire

Top 5 Family Attractions in Yorkshire

With the Easter holidays just around the corner and the weather warming up, everyone is looking for fun ways to keep the family occupied during the downtime. Luckily for those of us based here in Yorkshire, this doesn’t necessarily mean jetting off to somewhere sunny – there’s plenty to do right here on the doorstep without breaking the bank!

We’ve rounded up our top 5 family days out in Yorkshire – and with theme parks, zoos and museums (to name a few) there’s something to keep everyone entertained right outside our front door.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park, South Yorkshire

Located in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, Yorkshire Wildlife Park is home to an array of animals – including the only polar bears in an English zoo! Visitors can watch lemurs swing overhead in the walkthrough enclosure of Lemur Woods, visit one of the largest tiger reserves in the whole of Europe, and see a number of endangered species being rehabilitated in their world-class conservation programmes.

First opened in 2009 the park now attracts over 323,000 visitors per year – it’s variety of animals and focus on learning makes it the perfect family day out. YWP offers a range of activities every day, from informative talks to live feeding demonstrations, so it’s easy to keep little ones busy. Dining is always important for a day out with the whole family, but they’ve got that covered, too – there are several different themed cafes and restaurants available to stop at for a bite to eat, or picnic areas available if you’d prefer to bring your own lunch. The park also has a variety of gift shops in Safari Village selling everything from gourmet sweets to craft beers, so everyone will be able to pick up the perfect souvenir!

Magna Science Museum, South Yorkshire

Based just outside Rotherham in South Yorkshire, Magna is the perfect day out for any budding young scientists. Separated into four ‘pavilions’ the museum explores the elements – earth, air, fire and water – in a physical way; it’s science you can see, giving young learners the opportunity to get to grips with the elements hands on. With a fire tornado, the chance to work a real JCB and a live demonstration of the old steel works (amongst a range of other exciting activities) there’s plenty to marvel at, creating the perfect balance between fun and learning.

During the summer months, head outside to the SCI-TEK outdoor adventure centre or make a splash at the AQUA-TEK water centre, which is coveted as ‘one of the UK’s largest outdoor water play zones.’ These are perfect for the warmer weather, meaning they’re only open in peak season from 23rd May – but the rest of the museum is open all year round with plenty to do!

XSCAPE, West Yorkshire

If you’re looking for a place that really does have something for the whole family, then XSCAPE in Castleford is a sure-fire hit. With everything from shopping outlets and restaurants, cinemas and escape rooms to aerial ropes courses and snowboarding sessions, there’s guaranteed to be something that everyone will love, whether you’re looking for something relaxing or a little more high octane.

XSCAPE boasts an indoor ski slope, state of the art cinema, escape rooms, bowling alleys, laser zones, trampoline parks – the list is almost endless. You’ll never run out of things to do here so it really is a great day out for everyone, and with a huge list of restaurants to keep you topped up in between activities you really can make a day of it.

Flamingo Land, North Yorkshire

It couldn’t be a round up of great family days out without throwing a theme park into the mix! Flamingo Land in Kirby Misperton, North Yorkshire, combines the thrill of a theme park with the fun of a zoo and their on-site accommodation means you can enjoy your visit even longer! Their attractions range from kids rides to thrill rides so the whole family can join in the fun – the park reopens for the summer season on March 27th. Until then, you can visit over 140 species in their zoo, with keeper talks daily and outdoor play areas to let off some steam. You’ll also find a range of cafes and bars dotted around the park to grab a spot of lunch – and if you want to extend your trip, check out their accommodation and short break packages, ranging from caravans to luxury suites.

Go Ape, West & North Yorkshire

Looking for something a little more outdoorsy? Go Ape is perfect for little thrill seekers – aerial adventures on a high ropes course in the woods would be enough to get anyone’s adrenaline pumping! With a Treetop Adventure course for little climbers to the 15-meter-high Treetop Challenge for the more seasoned of the bunch, everyone will be able to enjoy themselves in the great outdoors – and it’s great for building teamwork, too! The obstacles, platforms and treetop zipwires give you plenty to do; courses range from 1-3 hours depending on the difficulty. The West Yorkshire site in Leeds is in the grounds of Temple Newsam, so finish the day off with a walk around the beautiful stately home and treat yourself to lunch in the tearoom. If you’re heading to the North Yorkshire Dalby branch then you’ll be able to enjoy their specialist off-road Forest Segways, or immerse yourself in the beauty of the forest at night with their after-hours Sundown Trees experience, where you’re invited to enjoy the ziplines after dark (this course has limited dates and availability, so be sure to book ahead!)

Of course, these are just a few of the amazing days out to be had here in Yorkshire – we’ve got museums, seaside and a whole bunch more. You don’t need to jet off to enjoy a great day out!

What Are Car Hire Additional Extras?

Car hire with additional extras

Additional Extras (and when to take them)

When hiring a car there will always be additional extras available at the rental desk. Below are the most common extras you can take but some suppliers offer others such as ski racks and snow chains. Every rental supplier will offer these on collection of the car – the important thing is knowing when to take them!

Additional Driver

Most rental companies will offer the option of an additional named driver, as long as they meet the supplier’s requirements for age and driving experience. This can come in handy if you’re going to be doing a lot of travelling and would like to split the driving with another person in the group, so is worth considering if you’ve got a long trip ahead. However most suppliers will charge to add an additional driver and the cost will vary between suppliers; most have a set daily rate and some may cap this charge after a certain number of days, but this is not the case for all suppliers – be sure to check the extra cost when agreeing to an additional driver. If this is something you’re interested in, we can offer hire with a free additional driver in some locations, so it’s always worth getting in touch with our team directly if this is something you might need!

GPS

A GPS can certainly come in handy, especially if you’re travelling in a location that you’re not familiar with. The majority of suppliers will offer this for an extra charge, but before agreeing to add the GPS it’s important to check the car you’re being given first, as some of the new model cars may have a GPS built in (and you don’t want to be charged for something you would already have!) Some suppliers and location may also be able to offer a free GPS – our team will be able to help you look into the options if this is an important factor in your rental.

Child Seats

If you’re travelling with children, it’s important to ensure you have the correct seats – before you travel make sure to check the child seat regulations for the country you are hiring in. If you need to add child seats to your rental you can usually do this at the desk; again, the cost is very much dependent on which supplier you are hiring with. However, the advice we always give to our customers to cut down on costs is to take your own wherever possible – most airlines will let you take 2 items on board for free per child travelling, so this is a great way to save money on your hire and negate having to add extras on at the desk. (Just be sure to check with your airline before travelling on their rules regarding this.)

Winter Tyres

Heading somewhere with a reputation for bad weather? If you’re travelling somewhere with a lot of snow, you might want to make sure your rental includes winter tyres to be sure your travel is as safe as possible. These can be added to bookings in certain locations and only at certain times of the year, so it’s always worth getting in touch if you have questions about this. At certain points in the year a lot of locations will require cars to have winter tyres by law, meaning that during this time cars hired in those locations will include the winter tyres as standard. Our team will be able to advise on the best options in terms of the requirements for winter tyres, ensuring you have a safe rental that meets the requirements for driving in wintery conditions.

Additional Insurance

One of the main extras that our customers take when collecting their rental car is the supplier’s additional insurance. When hiring a car, the vehicle will have an excess amount that you’re liable up to if you damage the car, and suppliers will offer supplementary insurance to reduce this down so that you pay less in the event of damage.

Most of the time the supplier’s insurance is completely optional, and you can decide once you get to the desk whether you want to reduce the excess. Alternatively, you could choose to take an excess reimbursement policy – this often works out much cheaper than the supplier’s direct insurance and with this you still have the excess (so if you damage the vehicle you would still be charged) but then you would be able to claim back any costs for damage via this policy. Again, it’s always best to check with the team so you can be clear on what you’re covered for, and they will be able to answer any questions you have regarding the insurance included in your hire.

Roadside Assistance

All our car rentals include a standard breakdown cover – this covers you in the event of mechanical breakdown. So, if the engine cuts out, the vehicle’s warranty will cover you for repair. On the other hand, if you require assistance due to something simpler such as a flat tyre, the wrong type of fuel, flat batteries or even locking the keys in the car, the supplier’s breakdown policy will not cover you for this. That is why most suppliers will offer a supplemental roadside assistance product, to cover you for all instances of breakdown. The charge for this service will depend on the supplier – as will the specific of exactly what this service covers. For example, AVIS offer a roadside assistance package at 5 GBP per day which includes tyre assistance (in the event of a flat tyre) lockout service (to help you get back into the car if the keys are locked inside) flat battery service, and a fuel service (to deliver enough fuel to get you to the closest fuel station if you run out)

Of course, this can be handy in case of emergencies – but as with all additional extras is completely optional, so be sure to weigh up the cost and the likelihood of needing the service before you agree to any extra charges.

Fuel Service

Some suppliers may offer a ‘fuel service’ option – most rentals will require you to return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel in the tank as when you collected it, however the fuel service option means you pay for the fuel up front directly to the supplier and can return the car with an empty tank. This can be handy if you know you will definitely be using a full tank of fuel, or if you are very pressed for time and might not have the opportunity to fill up before returning the car. Do be sure to consider all the options, though – most suppliers are located very close to a fuel station so topping up the tank couldn’t be easier, and a rental supplier will usually charge more up front than you would pay to top up yourself, as they will add a refuelling charge to the cost of the fuel.

As always, our team are on hand to help with any questions you might have about your rental – if you need a hand deciding which extras are the best fit for you, don’t hesitate to get in touch!

5 Reasons To Stay In The UK For This Holiday Season

Why should I go on holiday in UK

5 reasons to stay in the UK for your holiday this year

In recent years, most people who live in the UK tend to travel abroad for their holiday, whether that be once or multiple times a year. I love travelling to new countries myself and learning about the culture there, however a holiday in the UK can be just as good and, in many ways, even better than travelling abroad. In this blog I am going to talk about the top 5 reasons why you should stay in the UK for your 2020 holiday.

No more stressful airport trips

Everyone can agree that travelling by plane is very stressful at the best of times. Not to mention the high prices that are charged in the holiday season. You are advised to arrive at the airport 2 hours early, fly to the destination and then collect your luggage at the other side. The whole process takes a very long time from door to door. In addition to that flight times are not always ideal, and flying is not very eco-friendly. If you stay in the UK the chances are you can drive to your destination, this eliminates nearly all the problems that flying comes with. Also, you don’t have a luggage allowance, take as much as you can fit in your car. If you need a bigger car, you can hire a 7 seater from us to take even more luggage.

The UK has more to offer than you may think

You may be thinking that avoiding plane travel and staying in the UK sounds good, but the UK doesn’t live up to the mountains in Switzerland and beaches in Spain. Admittedly, you’re right, however, the UK still has plenty of amazing locations to offer. Amazing beaches line the coast of the UK and if the weather is anything like the last 2 years, there will be more than enough sun. As for mountains, there are many mountain ranges with high peaks of over 3000 feet high and breathtaking views. Large cities offer a completely different holiday visit Edinburgh or London for a city break without leaving the UK.

Take your pet on holiday with you

Usually, when you go on holiday it is likely that you have to put your beloved companion into a kennel for the week while you go have a great time abroad. If you travel in the UK, you can take your pet with you so you can both enjoy the holiday. It is not hard to find accommodation that is pet friendly for only a small charge or even free.

No language barriers

As much as visiting a new country is great, language barriers can become stressful. Whether you are trying to read signs or asking for directions, you can spend a lot of time trying to understand a different language. In the UK the main language is English, and it is very rare to find someone who cannot speak the language. Although, other languages such as Welsh are used alongside English, even road signs in Wales also have an English translation. You will be surprised how much time you save yourself just from eliminating the language barrier you would have if u was abroad.

You can save yourself money

Travelling abroad can be expensive, flights can set you back a few hundred pounds per person. Add on top of that travel insurance and accommodation in popular holiday locations and the cost soon adds up. By travelling in the UK your cost of petrol to drive to the location is likely to be less than the cost of a flight for one person. You can use this extra money to eat out more than usual or visit expensive attractions you wouldn’t usually consider.

There you go, that is just 5 reasons why you should stay in the UK for your holiday this year. If you need to hire a car, maybe your car is not big enough or you would like a more reliable car, we can help. We have cars of all sizes from mini cars like a Fiat 500 to 7 seaters like a Ford Galaxy, so choose what car size suits you best. If you need car hire you can contact us via call on +44 (0)113 880 0748, email us at sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk or talk to us via the live chat.

Car Hire In Netherlands With Winter Tyres

Hiring A car in Holland with Winter Tyres

Car Hire In Netherlands With Winter Tyres

The Netherlands is a very popular location, with so much to do you will be able want to spend more than a week there. Choose between exploring the capital of Netherlands, Amsterdam, or hiring a bicycle and cycling from town to town. If you hate cycling up hills, don’t worry the Netherlands is very flat which makes for pleasant riding in the sun. If you choose to visit in the Winter there is still lots to do, like ice skating, maybe even on the canal if it’s cold enough!

If you are travelling in Winter, you need to make sure you know the laws of country while you are driving there. To make it easy for you, we have compiled everything you will need to know about hiring a car in Netherlands with Winter tyres into this blog.

Do I Need Winter Tyres in Netherlands?

No, if you are driving in Netherlands there is no legal requirement for you to have Winter tyres on your car. In the Netherlands, you are also not allowed to use snow chains on your car, however if you travel to another country you may need to add snow chains to your booking. Snow chains can be added for around just over £20 per day, with a maximum cost of around £85.

Can I Request Winter Tyres In Netherlands?

Yes, winter tyres can be requested from the supplier when you book, should you need them. Winter tyres cost £17.25 per day based on a 1-week hire. If you are wanting to add Winter tyres with your booking speak to our team to avoid any confusion.

What Else Do I Need To Consider?

There are a couple of ski resorts in the Netherlands and if you plan to visit any you might take your own skis. If this is you, you will need to have somewhere to store your skis while you travel. Unfortunately, we don’t have any suppliers who offer ski racks available for hire. However, if you do plan on taking skis, we suggest that you hire a larger car to make room for your skis.

If you plan to make use of our cross border car hire offer, it is important that you check the laws regarding driving of any country you plan to visit. If you need anything extra like winter tyres or snow chains, these must be added when you book. Failure to comply with the law could result in your insurance becoming void or may get you in trouble with the local law enforcement.

We always recommend that you call our team if you are interested in booking a car, especially if you have specific requirements. Our team of car hire experts are more than happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have to ensure you have a stress-free car hire. Get in contact with our team today.

Flybe Customers Told Not To Travel To The Airport…

Flybe refunds and travel arrangements

Flybe enters administration

This morning, on the 5th March, airline provider Flybe released a statement to confirm that they had entered administration. All Flybe customers were advised not to travel to the airport unless other arrangements had been organised. The statement went on to say that there would be no alternative flights arranged by Flybe. So, what happens next if you have a flight arranged with Flybe in the near future?

Alternative travel arrangements for Flybe customers and staff

You have a few choices for alternative travel arrangements. Firstly, if you are travelling on a domestic flight in the UK, you may be able to get a free train ticket. FirstGroup, which is the largest rail operator in the UK, have announced that if you can prove you had a flight booked with Flybe within the next week, you are eligible to travel on their trains for free. You will need to have a boarding pass or another valid proof that you have booked a flight for these dates, Flybe staff can just show their staff ID for the same offer. Another rail provider, LNER, have also offered free rail travel for Flybe customers throughout the 5th March.

Secondly, easyJet are offering a free flight for any customers or staff that are due to fly on the 5th March. If you are travelling after the 5th March, easyJet will allow Flybe customers to fly for £65 up until the end of May. On this flight you will be allowed to take a 15kg hold bag with you.

Can I get a refund for my Flybe booking?

If none of that helps you, the only other thing you can do is re-book a flight with a different company. The good news is, you may be able to get a refund for some or all of your money. If you have travel insurance, there is a good chance you will be covered and will get a refund. With that being said not every supplier covers cancelled flights due to an airline collapse, but it is worth checking, if you have travel insurance. Secondly, you can apply to your credit or debit card provider and they may be able to reimburse you. Finally, if you bought your holiday as package from a 3rd party, separate to Flybe, you may also be eligible for a refund due to ATOL protection.

Low Deposit Car Hire In Australia

Car hire low deposit Australia

Car hire with a low deposit in Australia

We are pleased to announce that we can now offer car hire with a low deposit in Australia. For the majority of car rentals, you must pay a security deposit that is refunded or released after you have returned the vehicle. Some or all of the deposit will be used to pay if the vehicle is dirty, damaged or returned later than the drop off time. Usual deposits for car hire in Australia can be several hundred or even thousand Australian Dollars. We work with a supplier in Australia who offers car hire with a low deposit of just 200 AUD.

Why would I want to hire a car with a low deposit?

As mentioned above the deposit for car hire is refundable, however there are still several reasons why you may want a low deposit when renting a car. If you have been saving up for months before your holiday, we think that you would rather be spending that money on food and attractions while you are in Australia. You might not have a very high limit on your credit card, or you may just prefer to have more money in the bank readily available for you. Whatever your reason, Indigo Car Hire can help. Car hire with a low deposit in Australia will have you driving away and leaving the financial stress of travelling in the dust.

Other services we offer in Australia

If you would like to book car hire with a low deposit in Australia or any of our other offers, please get in touch with our team.
