5 Benefits Of Hiring An MPV

5 Benefits Of Hiring An MPV

When it comes to hiring a car, most customers tend to overlook the type of vehicle they are going to be driving and often make their decision based on the brand of the rental vehicle.

This is understandable, even I prefer commuting in a large German saloon car and probably wouldn’t consider buying a low cost people carrier from the far east, but when it comes to hiring a car I try and get the most practical vehicle possible.

You may remember last year I took the family camping to Wales, squeezing 3 children with child-seats in the back of said large German saloon was almost impossible but a problem with my car forced my hand and I had to hire a car.

We ended up with a Citroen C4 Picasso, not a huge car but I was very surprised with the amount of space inside, space is a luxury in many modern cars and is number 1 on my list of 5 Benefits Of Hiring An MPV.

1. Space

Having enough room for the 2.4 children, the dog, cat, hamster and the kitchen sink is almost impossible these days unless you want to leave all of your luggage at home. The space available in some of the larger people carriers or 7 seat MPV’s is impressive and will make some of the larger estate vehicles cower in the corner.

2. Comfort

The extra space also adds to the comfort of all passengers. That couple of inches extra leg room doesn’t seems like much but you will be thankful for it after a 6 hour trip from Yorkshire to Plymouth. A little extra room in the front so you can both rest your elbows can also avoid in car arguments, in my experience…

3. Peace & Quiet

Stopping arguments in the front is nothing compared to what can happen in the back if everyone is happy. A lot of modern MPV’s have enough toys in the back to keep Mr Magorium happy. Tri-zone climate control, tv screens, individual tables and even power points for the all important phone/tablet/console chargers.

4. Cost

Hiring a 7, 8 or 9 seat vehicle could negate the need to take 2 or even 3 cars on the same trip which could save on fuel, toll roads, congestion charges, ferry crossings ect which can all add up.

5. Usability & Visibility

Being a little higher up on the road can really improve visibility which is a great safety feature but being higher up is also great for loading and unloading the luggage and even the children into the car.

Abolition Of The Counterpart Licence

Driving licence UPDATE

On the 8th June 2015 the ‘Abolition Of The Counterpart Licence’ will take place. This means that the paper part of your photo card driving licence will no longer be required and in fact the government are advising they you destroy them.

Please note: if you have a paper licence issued before 1998 when the photo cards were intoduced, DO NOT destroy it.

This applies purely to the paper counter part of a licence that shows the points and convictions.

This could potentially cause a number of problems but the main one relevant to hiring cars is the fact that most suppliers request to see your counterpart before allowing you to drive away.

Surprisingly enough the government/DVLA have thought about this and created a way that you can share your information with rental companies, employers and anyone who may need to see them.

Watch this video:

As with any new system or way of doing things I imagaine there will be teething problems but as an idea i think its great and its one less piece of paper to worry about when travelling.

I look forward to the day that this happens with passports too.

Moving Abroad? Have You Updated Your Driving Licence?

driving licence

Certain things have changed recently when it comes to hiring a car in the UK, specifically for those who have made the decision to emigrate or retire in the sun and still hold a UK driving licence.

While I am extremely jealous of you all waking up every day to sunshine and being very close to some lovely golf courses, I will put that aside and give you some information and tips on what you need to consider when returning to the UK.

Hire companies in the UK and indeed various European countries are making changes to the security measures they use before handing over a car potentially worth £20,000 – £30,000 to a stranger.

One of the most common checks in the UK is an address check, a little like a credit check which enables the supplier to confirm you are who you say you are. This is starting to cause problems for a number of customers who have moved abroad and no longer have an address in the UK, especially those who haven’t updated their driving licence.

Over the years I have met a lot of people around Europe who hold their British driving licence with pride and do not want to change it for an EU licence or even a licence from their adopted country. This could now start to cause you problems as more and more supplier begin to use the checks mentioned above.

Others do apply for a new licence but keep their British licence for when returning home. Again the above checks will cause you problems if you no longer live at the address on your British driving licence.

If a supplier does provide a car to you based on an incorrect or invalid licence then the insurance could be void which could cause all kinds of issues for the driver as ultimately on UK roads it is the drivers responsibility the ensure the vehicle is roadworthy and insured properly.

Driving Licence Tips

Below are some tips to help you avoid any issues when hiring a car if you no longer live in the UK.

  • 1: If you no longer have a residence in the UK then you must apply for a new licence with the local authorities.
  • 2: If you still have an address in the UK then make sure this address is the one on your current licence.
  • 3: If you are not resident in the UK, you will be required to provide your passport and an international driving permit if your driving licence was issued outside of the EU.
  • 4: If you are not resident in the UK, some suppliers will require you to provide proof of your return flights before handing over the keys to your car.
  • 5: If your licence states that you are resident in the UK then you will be required to provide ID such as a utlity bill or bank statement to prove the address on your driving licence is valid.

Obviously any or all of the above could cause you problems if your licence details are not up to date or have not been issued by the correct authority. If you are unsure then you should contact the DVLA or speak to one of our experts who will be happy to help.

Looking For A Budget Rental Car?

Budget Rental Car

If you are looking for a budget rental car then there are a few things that you need to consider before booking the cheapest vehicle that you find. Much like other services in the travel industry the advertised cost is not always the whole picture.

When you see a price advertised more often than not it will include the following:

What Do Budget Rental Car Quotes Include?

  • Rental Cost
  • CDW – Collision Damage Waiver
  • TW – Theft Waiver
  • TP – Third Party Liability
  • Breakdown Assistance
  • Local Taxes

These are all of the manadatory costs that are needed to pay to drive your budget rental car away from the suppliers office.

What is often not advertised are the additional costs involved, some are optional but others like depoists are required for security, take a look below:

Required

  • Rental Deposit: All rental companies require a security deposit, this can range from £100 to £1500 for standard cars.
  • Fuel Deposit: Most rental companies will now provide a full tank of fuel and require a deposit to cover this amount until the vehicle is returned full.

Optional

  • Excess Reduction: Can offer peace of mind and also reduce the amount of the rental deposit but it can cost upwards of £20 per day.
  • Young Driver Fee: If you are under 25 then you could be expected to pay upto £30 per day.
  • Mileage Charges: Most rentals come with unlimited mileage but this is not a given anymore, expect to pay upto 50p per mile over your set allowance.
  • Additional Drivers: While sometimes offered free of charge, a 2nd driver could cost you around £10 per day.
  • Child Seats: Expect to pay between £5 and £10 per day for a baby or booster seat.
  • GPS – Satellite Navigation System: Can sometimes cost upto £70 per week.
  • One Way Fee: Depending on where you are hiring these can be quite expensive.
  • Cross Border Fee: Sometimes free but can cost upto £250.

Dont Let The Cost Of Car Hire Ruin Your Holiday

Dont Let The Cost Of Car Hire Ruin Your Holiday

We have read a lot recently about the costs of car hire spiralling out of control and people being left feeling ripped of by some companies. It doesn’t have to be like this and you can have more control over the costs by following the below tips, so Dont Let The Cost Of Car Hire Ruin Your Holiday.

1. Book In Advance

A little cliche but it still really does make a difference for two reasons. Booking early can secure you a better price than leaving it until the last minute FACT: Many suppliers start selling low and raise the prices as availablilty decreases. Get in early and you are sure to find a beter rate.

The other benefit of booking in advance is that you then have the chance to save and esure you have enough to cover all of the costs involved.

2. Be Aware Of All Costs Invovled

When booking online, some people believe that the price advertised is the only cost involved, the majority of the time this is not the case. Apart from the standard rental cost you should always consider the following; Rental Deposit, Fuel Deposit, Additional Insurance, Insurance Protection, Additional Drivers, Child Seats, GPS and even local taxes.

When it comes to additional extras, you may find that it is much cheaper to take your own or purchase them yourself to sell on once you have used them.

3. Shop Around

As with anything if you spend the time researching online you could probably save yourself a few pounds. If you don’t have the time and don’t want to waste the time just for a few pounds, this is where we come in. We, just like other brokers speak to a number of suppliers at your selected location and get the best rate available for the vehicle you are looking for.

Where we differ is that we look at the whole package, not just the lowest headline rate. We look at the rental as a whole and come back to you with the best package to suit your needs.

4. Forms Of Payment

Paying with a credit card is generally the best way when hiring a car. If you buy goods or services on your credit card, you have extra protection if things go wrong compared with paying by debit card, under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act.

If you do not have a credit card we can still arrange a vehicle for you but you are limited to the number of available suppliers, some of whom can be more expensive. So when booking early you give yourself the opportunity to gather the costs and apply for a credit card if the need arises.

5. Drive Safely

One of the biggest unexpected expenses is damage charges, sometimes little scuffs and scrapes can end up costing a lot. So drive carefully, think about where you are parking and make sure you are aware of what you are covered for.

Purchasing additional insurance from the supplier doesn’t always cover you for things like windscreens, tyres and the under carriage of the vehicle.

Treat additional insurance like a seperate product and shop around, there are some great deals on excess reimbursement policies out there.

Dont Let The Cost Of Car Hire Ruin Your Holiday and speak to Indigo Car Hire before you book. We are here to help with any queries you may have.

Hiring A Premium Vehicle

Hiring A Premium Vehicle

We had an enquiry this week that had a few of us here in the office scratching our heads. It got me thinking about when the time is right to consider hiring a premium vehicle.

The customer started the conversation by telling us about the luxurious holiday they had booked. It included first class flights, 5* hotels, private pools and a concierge service. All of this sounds like a pipe dream for a lot of us but some people have done well enough in life to be able to splash the cash every now and again and good luck to them.

When asking about the vehicle they were looking to hire for such a holiday, the answer was given swiftly and went something like this ‘cheapest one available, like a Vauxhall Corsa‘. This came as a bit of a surprise to us, the Vauxhall Corsa is one of the most popular vehicles available but its not the type of vehicle we expected to be offering for this type of holiday.

So, lets have a look at the benefits of hiring a premium vehicle?

Status

Not very important to some people but to others it can be. Do you want to be the only person pulling up to the valet parking outside your 5* hotel with a budget hire car? Hiring a luxury vehicle for a week can cost less than 1 night in a top end hotel.

Are you going to an important buisiness meeting and need to look the part? Hiring a prestige vehicle can give the right impression in certain circumstances. Dry cleaning your £500 Armani suit and wearing your best white gold cufflinks can do the trick, but pulling up in a Hyundai i10 may not have the desired effect.

Driver Comfort

Budget tends to be the number one priority when hiring a car. If money was no object what would your priorities be? For me it would be comfort, hiring a car with enough space for what is needed. Decent climate control and electrically adjustable seats. Doesnt sound like much but we would all love to have those options in our cars if we could.

More expensive vehicles tend to have automatic transmission this is another plus when hiring abroad, changing gear with the wrong hand can be difficult for some people. How about paddle shift, some of the top end Audi’s and BMW’s come with semi-auto paddle shift gear boxes which can be a lot of fun… So im told 🙂

Real Life Test Drives

Are you considering buy a new car? If so then it maybe worth your while hiring one for a while first to make sure you can live with the same car day to day. You can take a test drive from the showroom of course but will you learn anything in those few hours while trying to justify the cost to yourself.

Hiring one of our guaranteed models for a week or so will ensure that you can use the car as it will be used once you decide to purchase it. The commute to work, trip to the coast with the family and dogs, or even measuring the fuel economy. Purchasing the car before knowing if it fits your lifestyle can be a very expensive mistake.

We have a large range of premium and luxury vehicles available from manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, Ferrari, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini and more. Travelling Can Be More Expensive Without A Hire Car

132014 Travelling Can Be More Expensive Without A Hire Car

With the school holidays coming to a close and the time for family holidays almost over, its that time of year that those of us without children or children that are not yet in school decide to go away. There are many reasons for this but the main one is cost, we all know that travelling during school holidays is more expensive as harsh as it may seem, its a fact.

So when planning a holiday outside of the summer break what else do we do to save money? One thing that seems to pop up is deciding not to hire a car, im here today to show you how Travelling Can Be More Expensive Without A Hire Car.

When you consider all expenses of a holiday, some that are often over looked are transport costs such as airport transfers, buses, trains and taxis.

Airport Transfers

Unless you are visiting family or friends that may come and collect you, you will probably need transport from the Airport when you arrive. After checking a few of the popular websites for a typicaly family holiday, here is what I found.

Return Journey: Alicante Airport to Torrevieja, Family of 4. 01/10/2014 to 07/10/2014 = €120 Euro Best Price

Public Transport

Once at your destination, again without family or friends with a vehicle you will find yourselves geting a bus or taxi when going out for the day to the beach, waterpark or for a bit of sight seeing. Here are some basic costs I found.

Bus, Single Ticket: €1.5 Euro per person including infants for a short journey. So thats €6 Euro for the family per journey.

Taxi, Single Journey €15-20 Euro for a relatively short journey to the beach from a popular area like San Miguel to the beach at Playa de los Naufragos which is about 15km.

Train, Single Journey €30 Euro per person for a single journey from Alicante to Valencia, thats €120 Euro for the family.

As you can can see, travelling around your chosen holiday destination on public transport could add up to be quite costly. So lets have a look at hiring a car…

Small Car for 7 Days from Alicante Airport the cost on our website right now is £38.77 which is about €49 Euro. You will have to pay for a tank of fuel on top of that which would cost around €60-80 Euro. So a total cost of about €129 Euro.

A tank of fuel in a small city car like a Ford Ka could get you upwards of 600kms of driving, that is a lot of trips to the beach, shopping centres and waterparks.

Obviously my examples are specific to one area but the theory does translate to almost any trip, before you decide to travel do some research into how much basic transport will cost you and then weigh that up against the cost of hiring a car and not having to worry about any other transport costs.

You can check our website for hire car prices in pretty much any location around the world, or just pick up the phone and call +44 (0)113 880 0748 or chat with one of our experts online for a free no obligation quote.

Dont Get Lost On Holiday This Year

J.R.R Tolkien said in one of his iconic books … “Not all those who wander are lost…” If you are renting a car for your holidays and want to wander but not get lost you may think about using a GPS or satellite navigation system.

This will particularly appeal to men, who, as we know, are notorious for not wanting to stop and ask for directions. This is not sexist propaganda, it is a fact that most women are painfully aware of and men will sheepishly admit. Of course, there is also the fact that if you are driving in a foreign country and you don’t speak the language stopping and asking for directions may frankly be impossible. You don’t want to spend your valuable holiday time driving around in circles especially in hot weather when you could be sipping sangria on the beach or around the pool.

Most car hire companies offer these as optional extras and you may be tempted to book it as part of your hire, but here at Indigo we would advise you to think twice as it is definitely not cost effective. Renting a GPS can cost you up to £18.00 per day in some cases with most of which not having a cap you will be charged this for the duration of your rental. As with most extras it doesn’t seem like much per day but when you add it up over a fortnight it would cost you a whopping 252 pounds. There are lots of nice things I am sure that you would rather do with that money.

The good thing about new technology is that GPSs are portable and can be moved from one car to another, also can be used effectively in any country. So it would be the easiest thing in the world o buy one locally before you go and take it along with you on your trip to save money.

Here are some of the most common Sat Nav’s that you can find in hundreds of shops across the UK…

Binatone R435 UK & ROI 4.3” Screen – £24.99

Also equipped with a speed camera alert system the Binatone R435 has a super bright, anti-reflection touch screen so the picture is crystal clear at all times, with clear voice guidance and millions of pre-installed points of interest to find you’ll never get lost again!

TomTom XL IQ – £76.95

The most popular name amongst Sat Navs, TomTom always produce the best. This GPS offers a 3-hour battery life, 24 languages and speedy arrival times with pre-installed alerts to help you drive more safely and responsibly. As part of this package you also get free lifetime maps, an Easyport Mount, USB car charger and cable as well as the GPS of course.

So basically we can see that even if you decide to go for the most expensive GPS system we have mentioned, the TomTom, you will still have made a substantial saving and it will be yours to use when you return home and for any further trips you may make it the future. That is what we can call cost-effective!! And even more important for everyone, a stress free drive to and from the airport or around your destination without arguments over whose fault it is you are lost.

Worried About Luggage Space?

Luggage Space

When you come to hiring a car there are several different concerns that you may have, one of which is the space that you will have in order to fit your luggage in the vehicle. Since hired cars are different models to the cars you may own or have owned previously you are left unfamiliar with the amount of luggage space that is available.

Generally we cannot tell you which specific vehicle you will receive but we have a couple of suggestions based on luggage size, we wanted to particularly focus on informing people of the size of vehicles they should hire if they have a large amount of luggage.

The two options are people carriers and estates but what’s the best option for you?

People Carriers
These are cars such as the Vauxhall Zafira, Ford Galaxy or similar. There are two types of people carriers, the large true 7 seaters and the 5+2 seaters. The larger 7 seaters fit more luggage than the smaller ones, on the booking engine you can see what the suggested amount of luggage is, as an example…

Peugeot 5008’s, Vauxhall Zafira’s, Citroen C4 Picasso and Renault Scenic’s will hold roughly 7 pieces of standard size luggage.

Volkswagen Sharan’s and Ford Galaxy’s will hold one or two more than the smaller models listed above.

Estate Cars
We suggest estate cars if you are only up to 5 people but are carrying a large amount of luggage. Estates are essentially standard sized cars with an increased size boot in order to fit more luggage in, Estates fit on average around 6-8 pieces of luggage. Some fit slightly more than others like the BMW 5 Series Estate fits more than the Mercedes C Class Estate, you can find out a bit more about some of the estate cars in our fleet by clicking this link

We do however have a supplier in the UK that can guarantee a vehicle model, so if you are looking for something specific that you maybe familir with or have heard good things about then simply get in touch.

If you are still stuck on what vehicle you will need for the amount of luggage you have our expert reservations team will help you choose and suggest options for you whilst also finding you the best price. You can contact us on +44 (0)113 880 0748 or email us at sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk and we will be glad to help.
