What Makes A Good Car Hire Company

We at Indigo Car Hire have over 30 years combined experience in the car hire industry so we like to think we know a bit about a bit. Most car hire companies work in the same way and have similar costs to try and compete with each other.

But what else apart from the cost of the rental should you consider when selecting a car hire company?

Service: What do previous hirers think about the service they have received from the company? Before, during and after the rental. Consider speaking with your broker or having a look at review websites like reviewcentre.com to get a clear picture of the service they offer.

Fleet: What type of car will you be hiring? All car hire companies advertise a type of vehicle ‘Or Similar’ meaning you could end up with ANY car that fits the guidelines of the group you have chosen. So when hiring a VW Golf or similar means you will get a 5 door hatchback with a midsize engine, this could be a VW Golf, Vauxhall Astra, Ford Focus, Hyundai I30, Toyota Corolla or one of many more. So consider calling your broker or the car hire company direct and asking the question, what cars do you have on fleet? How old are the cars on your fleet?

Fuel: What type of fuel will your hire car take? Petrol or Diesel? Most companies cannot guarantee the fuel type of the vehicle you will be hiring but if you speak to your broker, they may be able to put a special request in for you.

Additional Extra’s: It’s important to consider all aspects of the cost when hiring a car, yes you may have found the car that you want at the cheapest rate but what about the baby seat, GPS, insurance excess, excess reduction and one way hire costs that go along with it?

Deposits: Most rental companies will require a deposit when you hire a car. This is usually done by freezing an amount on your credit card. The amount varies from supplier to supplier, always make sure you are aware of the amount. They can range from £500 to £1250 or more. Some companies offer a zero deposit amount providing you have taken out their extra insurance cover. Some companies actually take the deposit amount from your card and refund it when the vehicle is returned, so consider asking your broker/supplier how long this refund takes, we have known it take up to 21 days from some suppliers….

Location: Where is the car hire company based? Centre of town or on the outskirts where it may be difficult to get to? Are you flying into an airport? If so, do they have a desk in the airport or are they based off site? Companies with desks in the airport tend to be more expensive because of the costs involved in being on site..

Payment: The car hire company will almost always insist that the vehicle is paid for by credit card. If you do not hold a credit card then you are limited to which suppliers you can hire from. Some will allow a debit card payment and some will even allow a ‘third party payment’ meaning a friend or family member can pay for the vehicle on your behalf but this is very rare.

Manchester Airport Car Hire Village To Open Soon

Plans are in motion at Manchester airport to move all car hire suppliers to a car rental village based at the airport. No longer will suppliers have desks in the terminal building and all customers will be required to travel by courtesy shuttle bus to the rental village. The bus will operate a regular service covering all terminals at approximately 10 minute intervals. The operating hours of the regular shuttle service are from 06:00 to 23:00 but outside of these times there’s a telecom service at all terminals to request a shuttle pick up that will transfer customers to the village. Manchester airport car hire village to open soon a positive or a negative move by the airport?

A spokesman from the airport stated “This is a positive step forward for car hire at the airport. All companies providing a hire offering will be based in one area. Previously occupied parking areas will be reassigned within the airports general short and long stay parking”

For the time being suppliers are still based in their usual pick up points but the plans appear to be fast moving with some suppliers starting the move as early as September. Keep checking our blog for updated information regarding the move.

Tip Of The Week – Car Hire Excess & Excess Waivers

Excess & Excess waivers

On arrival you will be advised of an excess that the driver is liable for in the event of an accident or damage to the vehicle. The standard car hire excess usually starts from £500.00 upwards. This will be marked on your hire agreement and you will be required to sign against the amount stating you will cover the cost of the repair up to the value of the excess. This car hire excess is the maximum amount that could be charged to the credit/debit card provided. Any damage already on the hire car should be clearly marked on the paperwork.

Before signing we suggest you confirm you are happy to cover the value of the excess. If not there are other options which will usually be offered/sold by the car hire representative. Usually there are two options; either a partial or full waiver (please keep in mind some vehicles have a non removable excess but we have another option for you. See our annual cover below)

1) Partial Waiver – This allows the hirer to partially reduce their liability in the event of damage or theft. Usually this option is taken to prevent large payouts if something were to happen.
2) Full Waiver – This allows the hirer to completely reduce the car hire excess removing any liability in the event of damage or theft. Some suppliers do not offer this option but may offer various levels of the partial waiver.

Another option is to purchase a car hire excess reimbursement policy which starts from £49.00 per year. This would mean any charges imposed by the rental supplier to the hirer can be claimed back through this insurance package. This needs to be arranged prior to the rental commencing directly with Indigo Car Hire and cannot be purchased on arrival. This often works out cheaper than taking the suppliers insurance on hires more than 6 days or if you rent more than twice per year. Terms and conditions apply but our representative can provide any extra information you require. Click here for full details.

The last option is of course not to reduce the excess at all. The choice is yours.

Spanish Car Hire Giant Cease Trading

Recent reports suggest Aurigacrown will cease trading which is very sad news, I really thought the times of car hire companies going under was behind us. Aurigacrown are a well-known car hire company with a fleet of over 15,000 cars.

Is this something to do with the ridiculously low prices? Over the last 6 months i have seen cars go out to customers for a full month for as little as £200.00. This is a great price however the way the car hire suppliers make up for the low rates is through selling extras. Such as fuel, it is very common and also very annoying to customers renting cars in Spain, as most car hire supplier’s terms are to collect the car full of fuel and return back empty, charging the customers for the full tank of fuel at premium rates.

I really think due to the shortage of cars this summer, as 15,000 cars is a lot to reduce by. We will see the rates shoot up. Going back 3 years ago, when car hire supply was short exactly the same happened, cars were selling at over £300.00 per week and this was for the box standard Peugeot 107 or similar model.

We arrange quite a lot of Car Hire at Alicante Airport where the supplier has an office, really hope for all our Indigo customers the prices are not affected too much but it’s a matter of watch this space really….

Best selling cars for 2011….

Reading this post does not surprise me at all – http://cars.uk.msn.com/news/europes-best-selling-cars-of-2011 –  Reports confirm the number of sales of new cars purchased in 2011 is down which is understandable given the current financial climate. However the figures are not as low as predicted which means some people are still spending….

UK Sales were down by 4.4%, reports released recently confirm which makes & models were most popular throughout Europe. I have worked in the Car Hire industry all my working life and the good old VW Golf is always very sought after. Booking a compact car could be a Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, some suppliers stock Hyundai’s which means the Hyundai i30 falsl into this group. Some customers are willing to pay a little bit more to ensure they get the VW Golf and not a similar model. I have drove a VW Golf and know why we get these requests as the car is a great drive and you can feel the quality. We have all seen the advert ‘it sounds like a Golf’ this statement is very true. Reason for me mentioning the above, is that VW cars fall into the most popular models purchased last year.

Here we go, these are the best selling cars of 2011:

1 – VW Golf

2 – VW Polo

3 – Ford Fiesta

4 – Vauxhall/Opel Corsa

5 – Vauxhall/Opel Astra

6 – Renault Clio

7 – Ford Focus

8 – Renault Megane

9 – VW Passat

10 – Peugeot 207

Useful Tips When Hiring A Car

Thinking of renting a car? Below are key pointers of what to do when renting your next car hire. Follow these tips and you will avoid any problems.

Is The Price Fully Inclusive?

When booking your car hire always ask if the price is fully inclusive. Is there any additional charges that will be added when you collect the car? Example additional insurance, fuel charges.

How much is the insurance excess?

Always ask what the insurance excess amount is, this is the amount you have to pay in the event the car is damaged. This can range from £500.00 to £1000.00 depending on which car hire supplier you book with.

Can i reduce the insurance excess

Ask if you have the option to reduce the insurance excess, and what the daily cost to do this is. Bear in mind most companies will give you a daily fee but remember they may be quoting you a cost before VAT is added to make the cost sound cheaper.

Understand the pick up procedure

Make sure you fully understand the collection procedure of how to collect the car as some car hire companies the offer car hire at the airport are not always based inside the terminal building. You may have to call a telephone number on arrival or met in a certain area at the airport.

Know what ID you need with you

Make sure you know exactly what ID you need to have with you, if you have a UK Drivers Licence you must have the counterpart of you licence as well as the photo card.

How much will the deposit be?

Always ask how much deposit will be taken when you arrive, as this can range between £150.00 – £750.00. Any if you do not have the available funds on your credit card the car hire company will not supply the car to you. Some suppliers even allow you to hire a car with no deposit, contact us if you are interested in this.

Read the rental agreement before you sign

When collecting the car, make sure you read the rental agreement/paperwork you are signing and make sure the amount you are signing for is the amount you were quoted. Make sure no additional extras have been added without your consent as once you have signed the agreement you have agreed to the charges.

Check for damage

Make sure you have a good walk around the car and any damage you see make sure this is noted on the paperwork. If this is not go back to the supplier and get the damage details added. If the supplier says its all okay, take no for an answer as you can be liable for the charges on return.

Check fuel level

Make sure before taking the car hire the fuel is at the agreed level, also make sure you understand what fuel should be in the car when you return.

Check the car for damage when you return

When returning the car hire, make sure you get a staff member to check the car and agree there is no damage so you can leave knowing that no damage charges will be added.

At Indigo Car Hire we work with over 450 different Car Hire suppliers worldwide and we always like to make sure our customers get the best possible customer service. By following the above points you can rest assured you will have a pleasant experience when you next hire car with any car rental company.
