Top 5 Ski Locations In Europe For 2019/20

As it comes to the time of year where Winter hits Europe, it is now the perfect time to be booking a ski holiday. Whether you have never touched the slopes or visit every year, there is something for everyone, with many different locations to choose from. The problem is which locations are the best for skiing, here are my Top 5 ski locations in Europe.

Courchevel, France

Courchevel is the biggest and best known of the Les Trois Vallées (Three Valleys), a group of interlinked ski resorts. This resort has so much to offer, with 150km of its own mountainous runs that can be accessed by the resorts 60 lifts. Not to mention the surrounding ski runs that are connected, bringing you to a total of 600km of ski runs, that’s a lot of places to ski. With 4 glaciers, 10 summits, and heights of over 2,500 meters, you can’t ask for much more for the perfect ski resort. Whether you are a complete novice or an expert, there is something for everyone, with a quarter of all the ski runs at the resort been for beginners and a third for intermediates.

How to get to Courchevel

There are several airports that are all a similar distance away from the resort. Depending on your location and day of departure one airport might be more suited for your travel. Once you have landed at the airport you will need to travel between 2 to 3 hours depending on which airport you choose. The quickest and best way to do this is hire a car. Don’t worry we have your ski car hire covered, with ski racks, snow chains and GPS all available to make your travel as smooth as possible. If you fly to any of these airports, get in contact with us to discuss the best options for your needs.

Geneva Airport (149km) – 3 hours
Lyon Airport (187km) – 3 hours
Chambery Airport (110km) – 2 hours
Grenoble Airport (174km) – 2 hours

Zermatt, Switzerland

Want to go even higher? Zermatt is home to a ski run with altitudes of 3900 meters, making it Switzerland’s largest vertical drop. The scenic backdrop of the iconic Matterhorn that can be seen from most of the 350km alpine system makes this a favourite for many top skiers. Zermatt is renowned for it’s long runs, some are so long that they finish in the village, meaning you can ski home! There is a range of slopes at different skill levels to suit everyone. One for the more experienced skiers is to take the newly reopened, Matterhorn Glacier Ride all the way up to nearly 3900 meters. To make this trail network even safer and more accessible you can download a free app which gives you live updates of all the information you will need.

How To Get To Zermatt

Like with many ski resorts, due to their isolated location there is a long travel after your flight. There are several options of varying distances, below are all the ones in the surrounding area, so you can decide which is best for you. As you will be travelling anywhere between 1 hour and 4 hours, the best method of transportation is by having your own car. This allows you to travel at your own pace and gives you the freedom to stop off at any points of interests. We offer ski car hire at most airports, if you need to hire a car get in touch with our team who will make sure you have everything you need for your skiing holiday. Please be aware that Zermatt itself is a car free zone and the town is served by trains every 20 minutes from Täsch or by electric taxis.
Bern Airport (126km) – 2 ½ hours
Geneva Airport (230km) – 2 ½ hours
Basel Airport (232km) – 3 ½ hours
Zurich Airport (229km) – 3 ½ hours
Milan-Malpensa Airport (192km) – 3 hours

Val d’Isere, France

Due to its location, you can be sure Val d’Isere will be open well into May and some areas are even open until July. With the lowest slopes at 1,550 meters, and the highest reaching over 3,400 meters, you are guaranteed to have lots of snow. Here you can try over 300km of slopes that can be reached by over 150 ski lifts. Val d’Isere is home to an Olympic triple gold medal winner, Jean-Claude Killy, Espace Killy is even named for him. The slopes are suited to all skiers including covered magic carpet lifts for kids and some of the best instructors in the industry. Val d’Isere itself is car-free and known for its high-quality restaurants and welcoming après-ski events.

How to get to Val d’Isere

There are a few options when travelling to Val d’Isere, however some are less suitable. For example, although Chambery and Grenoble Airport are closer, finding flights and ones that are reasonably priced is a lot harder. Also, options for car hire are limited at these locations. However, the other 2 airports are slightly further but as they are bigger airports you can hire a car with all your ski car hire needs. That includes a ski rack, snow chains and a GPS to help you find your way there. Once you arrive at the resort there is a free shuttle service that takes you to all the main lifts.
Chambery Airport (144km) – 2 hours
Geneva International Airport (222km) – 2 ½ hours
Grenoble Isere Airport (217km) – 2 ½ hours
Lyon St. Exupery Airport (221km) – 2 ½ hours

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy

Once home to the Winter Olympics, all the way back in 1956, Cortina d’Ampezzo is still a superb ski resort. At the resort you will find shops and entertainment venues that you can make use of in between time on the slopes. Let’s not forget that the main purpose is to be skiing and with Olympic standard slopes with high altitude snowfields it’s hard to do anything but ski. Even if you’re a beginner or intermediate there is plenty of snow for you to enjoy. Unlike other resorts, Cortina d’Ampezzo, comes with cross-country ski trails with scenic views, a bobsled run, and an Olympic rink for ice skaters. There really isn’t much more you can ask for.

How to get to Cortina d’Ampezzo

Cortina d’Ampezzo can be best reached by one of the nearest airports. Despite the distance from the airport to the resort been marginally closer than others on this list, you are still looking at a minimum travel time of just under 2 hours. Things to be aware of are that some of the airports below are in Austria and if you wish to hire a car you will need to contact us to arrange cross border car hire. Other than that, if you would like a car, contact us today so we can arrange stress free ski car hire, with everything you need for the perfect ski holiday.

Canova di Treviso airport (136km) – 1 ½ hours
Venice Marco Polo airport (148km) – 2 hours
Innsbruck airport (164km) – 2 hours
Klagenfurt airport (228km) – 3 hours
Verona airport (265km) – 3 hours

Chamonix, France

Chamonix can be found on Europe’s highest peak, Mont Blanc, that stands at 4,807 meters high. The altitude of the glaciers and the mountain itself cool the surrounding area preserving the snow. This means you will find some of the best and most long-lasting snow conditions in the alps here. Chamonix is best known for hosting the first Winter Olympics. Since it’s original fame, people still visit year after year to tackle some of the worlds most challenging terrain. There is a good mix of slopes for everyone, at Grands Montets, you can ski the slope with the world’s greatest height differential. Whereas, at Domaine Skiable des Planards or La Vormaine areas, beginners and families can make use of the great learning facilities.

Top 10 Winter Sun Locations In Europe

Top 10 Winter Sun Locations In Europe

As the temperature drops here in the UK, it doesn’t take long to quickly miss the sun that you took for granted. If you can’t manage to wait month and month for the sun to return, why not travel to where the sun is? Most people think that a winter sun holiday means you must travel to the other side of the world. However, you can get temperatures of 20 Degrees Celsius all without leaving Europe. Here are my top 10 Winter Sun Locations in Europe.

Malta

Malta is located in the Central Mediterranean in the middle of Sicily and the North African coast. On the island you will find 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You can expect temperatures to rise just above 15 Degrees Celsius on average, which is warm enough to explore the many villages in just shorts and t-shirt. Other great things to try whilst on the island include snorkelling, diving and visiting the 16th century St. John’s Cathedral. The best part is this is less than 4 hours away, meaning your winter sun is closer than you may think.

Cyprus

If you want the warmest temperatures without leaving Europe, Cyprus is the perfect location for you. It is in the Eastern Mediterranean furthermore, it is the 3rd largest and most populous island in the Mediterranean, meaning it’s lively all year round. The average temperatures soar above the 20’s, even in winter, making it the ideal place to top your tan up. Indulge in, luxury boat trips and explore what nature has to offer with numerous waterfalls. Ancient ruins can be found across the country and if you want to have some fun visit one of the many water parks.

Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are a Spanish Archipelago and are 62 miles west of Morocco in the Atlantic Ocean. With many islands to choose from, it’s best to research all of them and see which one sounds like a dream holiday for you. If you are looking for varied culture and amazing beaches, you might want to look at Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote. However, if you are looking to go off the beaten track, the lesser known islands of El Hierro and La Gomera have one of a kind traditions and untouched landscapes. When visiting these islands, you can expect the temperatures to rise into the low 20’s.

Greece

Greece, officially known as the Hellenic Republic, is an island situated in Southeast Europe and has a population of nearly 11 million. The temperatures tend to be around mid to late teens during the winter. Despite the weather not been scorching, the water is still bearable in Winter, making it ideal if you love swimming or surfing, which is especially good at this time of year. The benefit of travelling at this time of year is that you will have most of the beach to yourself and will be able to wander around ancient sites without the big crowds.

Algarve

The Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal, due to its location, temperatures in the winter are around the mid-teens and it is not uncommon for it to reach 20 degrees. This area is best known for its golf resorts and Atlantic beaches, which can both be enjoyed under the sun year-round. The central coast is a lively place with bars, hotels, restaurants and villas, you will find that it’s time to go home before you know it. Best of all, this is only just over a 3-hour flight away, making it more accessible than you might think.

French Riviera

The French Riviera, also known as the Côte d’Azur, is in Southeastern France and is next to the Mediterranean. Here you can live the life of the rich and famous in beach resorts such as Saint-Tropez, Cannes and Monaco. Although average temperatures only reach around 15 Degrees Celsius, it will still be much warmer than the UK. Should the weather get colder in the evenings, there is lots to do and loads of places to shop. Make sure you take a lot of money with you as some of the worlds biggest designer brands have shops along the coast.

Sicily

Sicily is one of the 20 regions of Italy and is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Temperatures in Winter lie around the mid-teens, but it is not unheard of for temperatures to reach 20 degrees during this time of year. If you have a keen interest in history, you will love the city of Palermo and Valley of the Temples. Aside from the history, have a look around the island and look at the breathtaking setting, watch out for Mount Etna, the most active volcano in Europe and nearly the world.

South Coast of Spain

All the way along the South Coast of Spain has pleasant weather all year round. From Barcelona all the way to Seville, you can expect the temperatures to be pushing up to 20 degrees. With so many cities and towns to choose from on the coast there is something for everyone. Explore the historic sites at Alicante or have a stadium tour around the Nou Camp, the largest stadium in Europe, home to FC Barcelona. Make sure you find out about all the different coastal towns and cities to decide which one is best for you.

Turkey

Although, Turkey spreads across Eastern Europe and Asia, it still deserves a spot on this list. The Mediterranean Coast of Turkey gets lots of sun all year round and the average temperatures are just below 20 degrees. If you are an adrenaline junkie you can take part in paragliding, if you are looking for a more relaxing activity, you can road trip around the coastal towns. Let’s not forget that you are here for the sun and the best place to enjoy the sun is Patara, it is the longest beach in Turkey. At Patara you can relax on the beach or partake in horse-riding along the beach, watch out for the eggs of the endangered Caretta Caretta turtle that nest on this beach.

Azores

The Azores an archipelago in the mid-Atlantic and are a region of Portugal. Azores is best known for its spectacular landscapes that are unlike any others you have seen. For example, the island of São Miguel has lake-filled calderas that you must see to believe. There is also a rich marine life and if you’re lucky enough you might get to see a whale. All of this and temperatures average just under 20 degrees throughout the Winter. If you love nature, this is heaven for you, with hot springs, volcanic peaks, waterfalls and black-sand beaches, you won’t know where to start.

If you plan to visit any of these locations to get some extra vitamin D, it always helps to have a car to explore the area. Should you wish to hire a car at any of these locations, or any other locations for that matter, we have your car hire sorted. Contact us via call, email or by using the live chat and we can help find you the cheapest winter sun car hire deal.

Hiring A Car In Italy With Winter Tyres

Winter car hire Lithuania

Italy attracts around 60 million visitors every year; many people enjoy the ancient sites, like the Colosseum or the Leaning Tower of Pisa. However, a large number of tourists flock to northeastern Italy to visit the amazing mountains that lie there. These mountains make great ski slopes and on them you can enjoy a variety of snow-based activities.

If you are travelling up the mountains in the winter, you want to make sure that you are complying with the law when it comes to driving. We have gathered all the information you need to avoid any complications when you are hiring a car in Italy in Winter. Below you will find everything you need to know about winter tyres, snow chains and ski racks.

Are Winter Tyres A Legal Requirement In Italy?

Yes, in some areas of Italy winter tyres are a legal requirement, however in other areas it is just a recommendation that you have winter tyres. Winter tyres do not come as standard with your hire car, but you can request this when booking for, but it will cost you an extra £70.

Do I Need Snow Chains In Italy?

Yes, between 15th October and 15th April, you must have snow chains in your car. Also, certain areas may require you to have them at other times so be sure to research where you plan to travel before you go. Luckily for you snow chains are included in the cost so you don’t have to worry about them.

What Else Do I Need To Consider?

If you plan to go skiing, you will need to accommodate your skis. The easiest way to do this is to hire a ski rack with your car which can be done around £35 per week. If you hire a ski rack, keep in mind that the racks can only hold 2 sets of skis. If you need to carry more than 2 sets, it could be worth hiring a larger car and folding down the seats to fit all your skis in.

If you are planning to travel across the border with our cross border travel, it is imperative that you check the laws of any country you plan to visit. If it is a legal requirement to have winter tyres of anything else in any country you visit, you must arrange this when you book your hire car. Failure to comply with another countries law could get you in trouble with the local law enforcement and could make your insurance void.

If you are interested in hiring a car, we always recommend that you call us, especially if you have specific needs. Our team are always ready to answer any and every question that you may have to allow you to hire a car with peace of mind and ease. Get in contact with us today!

Travelling To Monza For The Italian Grand Prix?

F1 Car Monza Italian GP

Formula 1 is returning to Italy at the start of September and you won’t want to miss it. If you are lucky enough to be going to Monza to watch it live you may find this guide helpful. If you are like me, you won’t want to be spending all your money on travel. Hopefully this guide helps you save a bit of money so you can spend it on doing things you love.

Closest Airport to Monza

Linate (LIN) – 25km from circuit: Limited locations to fly from, London, Frankfurt, Madrid, if you can fly to this airport it is recommended.
Malpensa Airport (MXP) – 60km from circuit: Wide range of flights across most European countries including 13 UK locations.
Bergamo Orio Al Serio (BGY) – 50km from circuit: Flights from a range of countries in Europe, including 5 UK locations.

Travelling to and from the track

Train

If you can fly to Linate Airport you can get a taxi for 7km which would cost around €20 and then a train to Monza for between £6-£18 for 3 people to travel one way. Once at Monza you can either get the free shuttle bus, which will be very busy, so you will have to stand on a warm bus. In addition, there is no guarantee you will be on the first bus that arrives. Alternatively, you can walk or use one of the regular bus services which will add a little bit of extra money on.

If you are from UK, you can only fly to Linate from London so the chances are you will end up flying to Malpensa Airport. The train from the airport to Monza would be £30-£45 one way making it between £60-£90 for the round trip.

Car Hire

Although not the cheapest on the list car hire should still be considered. The price is based on what I could find today so the prices may change. If you arrive at Malpensa Airport you can hire a car that will carry up to 4 people with luggage for 4 days and will cost just over £50. On race day you will then need to use the park and ride situated around the track which will cost about €10. So, all in price if you include petrol would be around £80, but keep in mind you have the car for 4 days so you can do some sightseeing while you are in Italy.

Other transport options

You could also look into how much a coach would be from where you are to the track, but some people don’t like to sit on a long coach journey especially if it’s going to be warm. If you are ok with travelling by coach, you should definitely look into it.

If you are travelling to Monza for the Grand Prix or Italy for any other reason, then we are here waiting to find you the hire car that best suits your needs. Contact us directly prior to making your booking and we will make sure you find the best package possible. Call us on 0113 88 00 748, chat with us online or email sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk.
