Matt Runs The Leeds Half For St Gemmas

matt carter (1)We feel this is worth a mention, Matt Carter one the Mangers here at Indigo Car Hire has again taken part in the Leeds Half Marathon raising much needed funds for St Gemma’s Hospice.

Matt commented ‘This is the 8th year running I have completed the event and can safely say this year was the hardest of all those years – I think with a combination of a 5 month old and 5 year old daughter at home, it has meant training was at a minimum, and my completion time of 2.09 reflected this. However it is the people at places like St Gemma’s (and there are many other places like them) that provide the inspiration to keep on running and simply get through’

Matt raised a total of £93.00 for St Gemma’s which adds to the company total which can be seen by clicking here.

Things To Do In And Around Leeds When Visiting

With all of the lovely weather we have been having, we in the office have been asking each other for ideas on where to go on an evening or at the weekend on a budget. So here are the best Things To Do When Visiting Leeds.

Below you will find some of the attractions we have come up with and we believe are worth a try when visiting Leeds.

Roundhay Park & Tropical World

Roundhay Park is one of the most popular parks in Leeds due to its size, grandeur and array of things to do and see. The park covers over 700 acres of rolling parkland, lakes, woodlands and formal gardens. The park has cafes, a visitor centre and is also home to the ever popular visitor attraction, Tropical World.

Tropical World is one of the UK’s most popular garden tourist attractions and home to the largest collection of tropical plants outside Kew Gardens. Each year over a million visitors discover exciting new worlds, alien landscapes and exotic plant life – all in the heart of Leeds.

Work has recently been completed on the first phase of a major refurbishment of Tropical World. These changes include the new purpose-built crocodile enclosure, plus a new children’s party and educational area.

The Royal Armouries

Home to Britain’s national collection of arms and armour, the Royal Armouries Museum houses a world-renowned collection of over 75,000 objects. On 30 March 1996, the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds opened to the public. The new building, designed by architect Derek Walker, is the headquarters of the Royal Armouries complex of museums, and houses the majority of the museum’s collections.

Check out the weapons and armour of warriors through the ages from early medieval knights to the modern-day soldier. Discover treasures from around the globe – explore the Ottoman Empire, the Wild West, Europe, Japan and India. Wonder at the fabulous arms and armour of the Japanese shoguns, the royal houses of Europe and the kinds of England including Henry VIII who reigns supreme in our newly refurbished Tournament Gallery.

In addition to the five galleries which house 5,000 objects in the permanent displays and the more recent Peace Gallery, the museum also includes the Hall of Steel, a giant staircase whose walls are decorated with trophy displays composed of 2,500 objects reminiscent of the historical trophy displays erected by the Tower Armouries from the 17th century.

Temple Newsam

Temple Newsam is home to one of the most celebrated historic houses in the country, this Tudor Jacobean mansion has over forty restored rooms open to view. It is steeped in a rich history from its royal links to the lives of the ordinary people who lived and worked on the Estate.

Famous as the birth place of Lord Darnley, notorious husband of Mary Queen of Scots. Described as one of the best in Britain and beautifully restored to its former glory, it is now home to one of the most important collections of decorative arts in Britain.

  • Explore the Mansion, one of the greatest country houses in England and view the stunning collections
  • See a variety of rare breed animals in the Rare Breed Farm
  • Wander around the beautiful gardens
  • Explore the expansive park land, landscaped by Capability Brown
  • Enjoy some leisure time and book our football pitches, enjoy a round of golf, walk in the woods and discover the folly or explore the bridlepaths

A visit to Temple Newsam is a jam-packed experience, so break it up with a visit to the Shop or a coffee in the Courtyard Tea Rooms for a freshly baked scone or piece of cake.

Kirkstall Abbey

Kirkstall Abbey is, one of the most complete examples of a medieval Cistercian abbey in Great Britain. Set in wonderful parkland along the banks of the River Aire, Kirkstall Abbey boasts historic architecture amid a haven of wildlife and greenery.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the grounds or along the river. Participate or just watch some of the formal organised games played on site. Take part in many events held throughout the year. Bring a picnic along or indulge in refreshments on a new terrace overlooking the river.

There are many events held at Kirkstall Abbey throughout the year like classic car shows, charity events and summer fairs, so when visiting Leeds Kirkstall Abbey is a must for a family.

Meanwood Valley Urban Farm

Just a couple of miles outside the city centre, this working farm is great for the kids. Meet the farm animals and see farm practices as they happen, relax in the cafe, wonder through the nature area, have a picnic or even stock up on organic produce.

The farm is based on Meanwood Beck and demonstrates organic and sustainable farming to members of the public, as well as introducing the kids to various aspects of farming and the environment. The animals you will find are Dexter cows, pigs, donkeys, sheep, rabbits and hens.

The main timber building is a resource for the farm and the local community, with offices, exhibition space and meeting rooms. It is a good example of environmentally friendly self build construction creating a low energy consumption building using the principle of solar power. The roof uses a reed bed drainage system and is covered with turf.

Strong Winds Over Christmas

Heavy downpours and strong winds are set to batter Britain and bring the country to breaking point, or at least as far as travel is concerned. The storm is threatening to cause chaos with several weather warning issued for different parts of the country with many forecasters predicting there will be floods in the south of England and a large part of Wales. This potential hazardous weather could extend over the Christmas period.

The Met Office has predicted that wind speeds could reach as high as 80mph with the worst of it heading towards the south coast of England with sleet, snowstorms and icy conditions on the road potentially being very problematic. If you are planning to travel during the Christmas period you may need to seek alternatives as there could be many issues for both roads, rail and public transport such as buses.

It is expected that there will be very widespread train delays and cancellations across the country, Network Rail are working with other public transport companies in order to try and find replacements and alternatives. The advice is that you should make your journey as early as possible as delays may keep you longer than you expect.

Several flood alerts also means that the roads can be a danger and people are being advised to avoid flooded routes as it could mean more breakdowns, which no one wants the hassle of over Christmas. The Environment Agency are also warning people to keep a close eye on the forecast to see if there area is at risk of flooding. Also remember that if you do go through deep water to test your breaks immediately after to ensure that they are correctly working and the water hasn’t effected your stopping distance.

Since traffic is predicted to increase by 10-15% over the Christmas period all we here at Indigo Car Hire can say is to keep safe and avoid a journey if possible!

Local Councils Run Risk

Targeting motorists as a source of income? Absurd, or maybe it’s not. Local councils are risking illegally targeting motorists in order to seek a profit. An online tool/calculator called “You Choose” could be the cause of encouragaing these councils to break the law, this tool “You Choose” encourages voters to suggest how the authorities can raise or save money to fill other deficits and it’s a tool that’s available for councils through the country. The councils that use this tool include Cheshire, Chester, Croydon, Hertfordshire, Middlesbrough, Nuneaton, Bedworth, Southampton, Staffordshire Moorlands and Welwyn Hatfield with possible others. Voters are told that in order to raise the amount of income the council’s get they should increase motoring offence charges, expand controlled parking zones, and increase the number of on street pay and displays.

The worst thing is that voters have the chance to approve this suggestion which is deceiving to the council. If approve it may still be illegal to deliberately make money out of motorists which it may well be seen as if the fines go a step too far. Many people are calling for this tool to be removed as it threatens to undermine the public’s trust in their local government, amongst people speculating about the tool motoring experts are also watching on with great suspicion, the situation is a bit of a damned if you do damned if you don’t type thing for the councils. If councils don’t go ahead with the proposed move then they could face not being able to raise enough funds, if they do they will then be hated by the public and also be in trouble with the law.

Many people have been long suspicious that councils use motoring offences to raise money with parking charges rising and this just backs that fact up. It’s a very hard choice for the councils to make as their seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel. Fines to motorists are to ensure the safety of others and not to make money off of, councils exploiting this as a form of income is met by the disgust of many. The better choice for them is to not go ahead with raising prices and just try counteract the costs in other areas, this isn’t a quick fix like the latter but it’s the sure fire way to get out of trouble with no causalities, so to speak.

Leeds Bradford Airport Hits 3 Million

Leeds Bradford Airport has hit a huge mile stone with the news that it (LBA) has broken its 3 million passenger rolling figure, according to latest numbers from the CAA.

Passenger traffic was up by almost 20% in May and 13% in June compared to the same time last year, boosted by the successful delivery of its aviation development strategy to increase the number of operational airlinea and choice of routes.

The airport based in West Yorkshire is now one of the fastest growing regional airports in the country and are hoping for continued success.

The recent internal and external developments at the airport have proved popular and with the upcoming plans to extend the runway, things are looking bright for the future of LBA.

Tony Hallwood, Leeds Bradford Airport’s Marketing Director, said:

“LBA’s significant increase in passenger traffic and extended route and airline choice for 2013 is particularly pleasing in such a competitive marketplace. We work closely with all our airline partners to introduce new routes and add frequency on existing services, and our efforts are now reflected in the airport’s increase in passenger numbers.

LBA is proud to have secured commitment from several major airlines to invest in the region and create new employment opportunities. The three million passenger figure demonstrates the strength of our catchment area and the success of our strategy to deliver growth for the Leeds City Region and Yorkshire”.

Tackling Leeds Bridgewater Place Wind Issue

A skyscraper nicknamed The Dalek or rather Bridgewater Place is an office and residential building and still holds the title of the tallest building in Yorkshire since 2005 September, the building was said to be cutting edge architecture at the time of its build with many architects working tirelessly on the design. That same design however has caused the building to be under fire for quite some time now and it’s not just because of how it looks, the building is dangerous.

The dangerous skyscraper doesn’t pose the threat in the usual structural ways, the threat that has arisen from this huge building is wind. Wind is known to snap around the building due to its narrow circular front which causes extreme conditions for the road just below, the danger came to limelight when Ed Slaney in March of 2011 was killed because of the building. The 32 story building created winds so strong it lifted a lorry and threw it in the direction of passer-by Ed Slaney who was tragically killed by the incident, a further inquest into the death to establish the full events has taken place on 26th and 27th June 2013 yet we are still awaiting the outcome.

Leeds council has officially blamed the tower for a “number of incidents” since its construction in 2007, the council are tirelessly looking for a solution for the problem and are working with a number of scheme to tackle the issue. A team has been put together in order to get this issue solved before another serious accident can take place. A wind tunnel test proved that the current conditions of the building did not pass the commonly accepted pedestrian comfort or safety criteria making the building a dangerous structure indeed. Leeds city council are preparing to cough up a large amount of cash in order to get it tackled before it gets out of hand.
