6 Steps to a stress-free Canary Islands Car Hire

Guide to Car Hire in the Canary Islands

We’ve put together a quick guide that hopefully answers any questions you have about Car Hire Canary Islands making your experience stress free!

With the Canaries being added to the UK travel corridor recently, they are the perfect option for a quick getaway – sunny, warm, and most importantly, very cheap!

Step 1 – Make sure you have all the details right

Whilst this may sound very basic, it can be more confusing than you might think – a lot of the airports and islands have similar names and often do get mixed up. For example, you have La Palma airport on the island of La Palma, which often gets confused with Gran Canaria Airport. This is also called Las Palmas Airport due to it being in the city Las Palmas!

It’s similarly easy to mix up the dates/times (especially when not using the 24hr clock), so just double-check all your details and make sure everything is correct on the enquiry forms and when entering dates on the site.

Below is just a handy breakdown of the international airports, the islands they are on and their airport codes, and if in doubt just use the code to be 100% sure.

Airport Island Airport Code
Tenerife South Airport Tenerife TFS
Tenerife North Airport Tenerife TFN
Gran Canaria Airport Gran Canaria LPA
Fuerteventura Airport Fuerteventura FUE
Lanzarote Airport Lanzarote ACE
La Palma Airport La Palma SPC

Step 2 – Do you have any special requirements for Car Hire in the Canary Islands?

Are you perhaps a younger driver, only have a debit card or would just prefer a rental with unlimited mileage in the Canary Islands? These are all things that can create roadblocks with a lot of car hire companies. Fortunately we have lots of offers and special options available for many specific requirements, here are just a few of the deals we offer:

  • Debit Card Car Hire – we can accept all standard Visa and MasterCard debit cards, as well as Maestro cards also. The only cards we can’t take are prepaid, Electron and Union Pay.
  • Young Driver Car Hire – we can hire to anyone over the age of 18, there may just be a small young driver fee if you are under 23.
  • Senior Driver Car Hire – no max age limit on our rentals here, and no extra cost just for being over 75!
  • New Driver Car Hire – we can help if you have only held your licence a single day, you just need to be over 18 and have the physical photocard licence.
  • Low Deposit Car Hire – we have a minimum deposit of only 100 EUR, very useful for those with a low credit limit or if you simply don’t want to have a large amount blocked on your card whilst wanting to a Hire Car in the Canary Islands.
  • Unlimited Mileage Car Hire – no extra cost for unlimited mileage, allowing you to travel around as much as you want to.

It is worth mentioning that if you do have any of these requirements just make sure you contact us directly to book, as not all these options will be available to book on the website.

Step 3 – Booking the vehicle

We make booking Car Hire in the Canary Islands as smooth as possible. Please feel free to just call or email us with your location and dates/times and we can get a quote straight up for you, book in and provide you with all the info necessary. If you want to book yourself just enter your dates on the website and click search to find the cheapest rates. Just make sure that if you have any special requirements though that you do contact us directly.

Step 4 – Collecting your car on arrival

There are 3 different options for collecting, so if you have a preference just make sure that’s specified when you book:

  • Collection in the terminal – this is generally the easiest and quickest way, you just have to simply walk up to the desk in the airport, sign the documents and then collect the car, easy as that!
  • Meet and greet – also very straightforward and with this option the representative will simply meet you outside arrivals with your name on a board, and again you just sign the documents and collect the car.
  • Shuttle bus collection – with shuttle bus collection you just go to the arranged pickup point, a shuttle bus will then collect and take you to the nearby branch where you can collect the car.

Step 5 – Driving in the Canaries

Driving in an unknown country, especially on the opposite side of the road, is not always easy, here’s a quick guide to driving in the Canaries below, and for more comprehensive info see driving essentials

Side of the road? Drive on the right-hand side.
Miles or km? KM.
Min renting and driving age? 18 for both renting and driving.
Road tolls? Very few and all paid on-site when passing through.
Speed limit? 120kph for motorways, 50kph in urban areas.
Documents needed? Licence and passport.
Emergency number? 112.
Currency? EUR €.

Step 6 – Enjoying your holiday!

And with that you are free to just enjoy your holiday – it’s our job to make the whole process as smooth as possible so that renting barely crosses your mind. What Are Car Hire Additional Extras?

Car hire with additional extras

Additional Extras (and when to take them)

When hiring a car there will always be additional extras available at the rental desk. Below are the most common extras you can take but some suppliers offer others such as ski racks and snow chains. Every rental supplier will offer these on collection of the car – the important thing is knowing when to take them!

Additional Driver

Most rental companies will offer the option of an additional named driver, as long as they meet the supplier’s requirements for age and driving experience. This can come in handy if you’re going to be doing a lot of travelling and would like to split the driving with another person in the group, so is worth considering if you’ve got a long trip ahead. However most suppliers will charge to add an additional driver and the cost will vary between suppliers; most have a set daily rate and some may cap this charge after a certain number of days, but this is not the case for all suppliers – be sure to check the extra cost when agreeing to an additional driver. If this is something you’re interested in, we can offer hire with a free additional driver in some locations, so it’s always worth getting in touch with our team directly if this is something you might need!

GPS

A GPS can certainly come in handy, especially if you’re travelling in a location that you’re not familiar with. The majority of suppliers will offer this for an extra charge, but before agreeing to add the GPS it’s important to check the car you’re being given first, as some of the new model cars may have a GPS built in (and you don’t want to be charged for something you would already have!) Some suppliers and location may also be able to offer a free GPS – our team will be able to help you look into the options if this is an important factor in your rental.

Child Seats

If you’re travelling with children, it’s important to ensure you have the correct seats – before you travel make sure to check the child seat regulations for the country you are hiring in. If you need to add child seats to your rental you can usually do this at the desk; again, the cost is very much dependent on which supplier you are hiring with. However, the advice we always give to our customers to cut down on costs is to take your own wherever possible – most airlines will let you take 2 items on board for free per child travelling, so this is a great way to save money on your hire and negate having to add extras on at the desk. (Just be sure to check with your airline before travelling on their rules regarding this.)

Winter Tyres

Heading somewhere with a reputation for bad weather? If you’re travelling somewhere with a lot of snow, you might want to make sure your rental includes winter tyres to be sure your travel is as safe as possible. These can be added to bookings in certain locations and only at certain times of the year, so it’s always worth getting in touch if you have questions about this. At certain points in the year a lot of locations will require cars to have winter tyres by law, meaning that during this time cars hired in those locations will include the winter tyres as standard. Our team will be able to advise on the best options in terms of the requirements for winter tyres, ensuring you have a safe rental that meets the requirements for driving in wintery conditions.

Additional Insurance

One of the main extras that our customers take when collecting their rental car is the supplier’s additional insurance. When hiring a car, the vehicle will have an excess amount that you’re liable up to if you damage the car, and suppliers will offer supplementary insurance to reduce this down so that you pay less in the event of damage.

Most of the time the supplier’s insurance is completely optional, and you can decide once you get to the desk whether you want to reduce the excess. Alternatively, you could choose to take an excess reimbursement policy – this often works out much cheaper than the supplier’s direct insurance and with this you still have the excess (so if you damage the vehicle you would still be charged) but then you would be able to claim back any costs for damage via this policy. Again, it’s always best to check with the team so you can be clear on what you’re covered for, and they will be able to answer any questions you have regarding the insurance included in your hire.

Roadside Assistance

All our car rentals include a standard breakdown cover – this covers you in the event of mechanical breakdown. So, if the engine cuts out, the vehicle’s warranty will cover you for repair. On the other hand, if you require assistance due to something simpler such as a flat tyre, the wrong type of fuel, flat batteries or even locking the keys in the car, the supplier’s breakdown policy will not cover you for this. That is why most suppliers will offer a supplemental roadside assistance product, to cover you for all instances of breakdown. The charge for this service will depend on the supplier – as will the specific of exactly what this service covers. For example, AVIS offer a roadside assistance package at 5 GBP per day which includes tyre assistance (in the event of a flat tyre) lockout service (to help you get back into the car if the keys are locked inside) flat battery service, and a fuel service (to deliver enough fuel to get you to the closest fuel station if you run out)

Of course, this can be handy in case of emergencies – but as with all additional extras is completely optional, so be sure to weigh up the cost and the likelihood of needing the service before you agree to any extra charges.

Fuel Service

Some suppliers may offer a ‘fuel service’ option – most rentals will require you to return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel in the tank as when you collected it, however the fuel service option means you pay for the fuel up front directly to the supplier and can return the car with an empty tank. This can be handy if you know you will definitely be using a full tank of fuel, or if you are very pressed for time and might not have the opportunity to fill up before returning the car. Do be sure to consider all the options, though – most suppliers are located very close to a fuel station so topping up the tank couldn’t be easier, and a rental supplier will usually charge more up front than you would pay to top up yourself, as they will add a refuelling charge to the cost of the fuel.

As always, our team are on hand to help with any questions you might have about your rental – if you need a hand deciding which extras are the best fit for you, don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Flybe Customers Told Not To Travel To The Airport…

Flybe refunds and travel arrangements

Flybe enters administration

This morning, on the 5th March, airline provider Flybe released a statement to confirm that they had entered administration. All Flybe customers were advised not to travel to the airport unless other arrangements had been organised. The statement went on to say that there would be no alternative flights arranged by Flybe. So, what happens next if you have a flight arranged with Flybe in the near future?

Alternative travel arrangements for Flybe customers and staff

You have a few choices for alternative travel arrangements. Firstly, if you are travelling on a domestic flight in the UK, you may be able to get a free train ticket. FirstGroup, which is the largest rail operator in the UK, have announced that if you can prove you had a flight booked with Flybe within the next week, you are eligible to travel on their trains for free. You will need to have a boarding pass or another valid proof that you have booked a flight for these dates, Flybe staff can just show their staff ID for the same offer. Another rail provider, LNER, have also offered free rail travel for Flybe customers throughout the 5th March.

Secondly, easyJet are offering a free flight for any customers or staff that are due to fly on the 5th March. If you are travelling after the 5th March, easyJet will allow Flybe customers to fly for £65 up until the end of May. On this flight you will be allowed to take a 15kg hold bag with you.

Can I get a refund for my Flybe booking?

If none of that helps you, the only other thing you can do is re-book a flight with a different company. The good news is, you may be able to get a refund for some or all of your money. If you have travel insurance, there is a good chance you will be covered and will get a refund. With that being said not every supplier covers cancelled flights due to an airline collapse, but it is worth checking, if you have travel insurance. Secondly, you can apply to your credit or debit card provider and they may be able to reimburse you. Finally, if you bought your holiday as package from a 3rd party, separate to Flybe, you may also be eligible for a refund due to ATOL protection.

Can Car Rental Companies Track Where You Are?

Can a car rental company track where you are

Can Car Rental Companies Track Where You Are?

The majority of car rental companies have trackers fitted to their cars and vans. The reason for this is so that the supplier can protect their fleet of vehicles and make sure there is no breach of the terms agreed.

Why Would A Car rental company want to track where you are?

Car rental companies use a tracking device because they need to protect themselves, an example of this would be if the driver does not return the vehicle. If a tracker is fitted to the car, they can easily locate the car, making it harder for the car to be stolen.

Another reason why car trackers are used is to make sure there is no illegal or unlawful use of the car. In the past rental cars have been known to be used in illegal acts. By having the car fitted with a tracker it will already deter anyone wishing to use the car illegally. Also, if something illegal does happen, the location of the car at that time can be vital evidence.

Finally, if you hire a car and it is prohibited to cross over an international border, the tracker can be used to ensure you abide by this. If you choose to cross over the border, the supplier will know, and you could end up in a lot of trouble with the supplier and maybe even local law enforcement. For this reason, make sure you arrange cross border car hire if you wish to travel across an international border.

Should this stop you from hiring a car?

To conclude, yes, the majority of suppliers will track their cars. However, this shouldn’t make a difference to you, as long as you are abiding by the law and the rental agreement. It is only in place to protect the supplier and in some cases could protect you.

If you are looking for car hire, we offer car hire worldwide so contact us today. You can contact us by call on +44 (0)113 880 0748, email at sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk or by using the live chat function.

Hiring A Car With Winter Tyres In Belgium

Winter tyres in Belgium

About Belgium

Belgium is a popular location for many reasons, your reason may be the chocolate and waffles that are made there, or you might just want to visit some of the sites the country has to offer. Even in the Winter you can visit one of the ski resorts or explore the Christmas markets that lie in nearly every city or major town.

Whatever your reason for visiting, if you choose to visit in the Winter, make sure you know the laws in the country. We have gathered all the information you may need and hopefully this blog will answer any questions you may have about hiring a car in Belgium in Winter.

Do I Need Winter Tyres In Belgium?

No, there is no law that requires you to use winter tyres when driving in Belgium. However, if you would like to have snow chains, these are available to add to your booking for just over £30 for the duration of the rental.

Can I request winter tyres in Belgium?

Yes, Winter tyres are available on request but they cost around £21 per day based on a one week hire. If you would like to add winter tyres, it is best to call us so we can talk you through the booking and avoid any confusion.

Understanding Airport Car Hire Pick Up Procedures

Understanding Airport Car Hire Pick Up Procedures

Where do I pick up my hire car?

When hiring a car, it’s obviously important that you know where you’re heading to collect your vehicle. If you’re collecting from an airport, there are usually 3 different options for collection – in terminal, meet and greet or shuttle bus. This tells you where in the airport you will need to go to find the supplier’s desk.

In terminal car hire pick up

If your rental is in terminal, this means you will find the supplier’s rental desk in the terminal at the airport – you won’t need to leave the airport or get on a shuttle bus in order to collect your car. Most of the larger, multinational companies are usually in terminal; suppliers like AVIS, Enterprise, Goldcar etc. who are in most airports. However, this isn’t always the case depending on how many suppliers are at that airport, so make sure you check before you book. You may be drawn in by the cheaper prices of some suppliers who are off airport, but if you or someone you are travelling with struggles with mobility or you are with small children then you would probably benefit from a supplier who is in terminal – this will save you the hassle of heading through the airport and getting a transfer, as everything is right there when you land.

Meet and greet car hire pick up

In some locations, certain suppliers will offer a meet and greet service. With this option, a representative from your chosen company will meet you in the terminal when you land and will then take you to the rental desk. They will usually have a board with the company logo or the driver’s name so they’re easy to find, and they will take you to the supplier’s car park to hand over the vehicle. With these rentals it’s especially important to provide your flight number when you book, so that the representative knows exactly when to meet you and which terminal you will be at.

Off airport car hire pick up

For suppliers that are off airport, you will be required to take a shuttle bus to the rental desk to collect your vehicle – these are usually your budget suppliers who are not based in the terminal. The shuttle bus will be included in the rental price and means that when you land you will need to head to the airport’s shuttle bus stand and take a quick ride to the supplier’s desk just outside the airport. The frequency of the shuttle and the length of time it takes to get to the desk will depend on the supplier’s location – in London Stansted for example, all of larger suppliers have their rental desks in the car rental village just outside the airport, so the shuttle bus only takes a couple of minutes. Smaller suppliers such as Greenmotion are based further away from the airport in Stansted, so their shuttle bus would take longer. If you’re travelling with young children or have a traveller with limited mobility this may not be the best option for you, as there may be some waiting and it will take longer to get your rental car.

The collection procedures are definitely worth bearing in mind when booking a rental car – be sure to take into consideration not just the cost, but the needs of your group and the level of convenience you require when you’re collecting your vehicle. If you’re in any doubt of what your requirements are, or if you have any questions about collecting your car, then get in touch with our car hire experts – they’ll be on hand to book you a rental that ticks all of your boxes.
