Low Cost Convertible Car Hire

Low Cost Convertible Car Hire

Im travelling to Spain in a couple of weeks for a bit of R&R and golf with the lads. We have a few days down time so I have been considering hiring a car to go see a few old faces but mainly cruise around Puerto Banus with the top down.

I know rental cars are very cheap in Spain at the moment but can I really find Low Cost Convertible Car Hire? Well the simple answer is yes, but you need to be aware of who you are booking with and what is included, or more importantly what isn’t included.

I decided to trawl the internet rather than use my contacts over there because I wanted to get a fair comparison and here is what I have found.

Low Cost Convertible Car Hire At Malaga Airport

All quotes are for 4 days, collecting at Malaga Airport on Monday 30th April, 11.30am and returning to the same location on Friday 4th May, 11.30am.

Fiat 500 Convertible

OK Rent A Car are offering a Fiat 500 Convertible ‘or similar’ (ill come onto what this means) for just £47.28, Yes that’s correct, the decimal is in the right place. Forty Seven Pounds and twenty Eight Pence… So what else do you need to know before booking this ‘too good to be true’ price?

Online Rating: 7/10
Excess: €1200
Deposit: €1200 held on your credit card
Fuel Policy: Full to Full
Mileage Policy: Limited to 300 KMs per day
Pick Up: Shuttle Bus From Terminal

OK Rent A Car offer an excess reduction policy which means you can lower your liability and deposit to ZERO if you pay an extra charge on arrival of €20 per day, this means no hude hold on your credit card and no nasty charges if the car is scratched.

Fiat 500 Convertible

Delpaso Car Hire are offering the same car for slightly more at £56.26.

Online Rating: 6.4/10
Excess: €1500
Deposit: €1500 held on your credit card
Fuel Policy: Full to Full
Mileage Policy: Unlimited
Pick Up: Shuttle Bus From Terminal

Delpaso do not seem to offer a way to reduce your excess or deposit which is unusual. What we do know is that they will make you responsible for taking pictures of any existing damage on the car, meaning if you miss some and they sport it when you return, you will be charged.

Peugeot 308 Convertible

A larger vehicle from Delpaso Car Hire for a few pounds extra. £70.33 will get you a hard top compact vehicle with the same terms as before.

Online Rating: 6.4/10
Excess: €1500
Deposit: €1500 held on your credit card
Fuel Policy: Full to Full
Mileage Policy: Unlimited
Pick Up: Shuttle Bus From Terminal

Volkswagen Golf Convertible

A name you might of heard before is Europcar, one of the largest suppliers in the world. Unfortunately a well known brand often means higher prices and Convertible Cars In Malaga are no different. £222.20 for the same period here, however you may prefer their terms of rental.

Online Rating: 6.3/10
Excess: €1040
Deposit: €300 held on your credit card
Fuel Policy: Full to Full
Mileage Policy: Unlimited
Pick Up: Desk in terminal, car in car park

Picking up in the terminal is attractive to most people as it is much more convenient, Europcar also offer an excess reduction package at €26 per day which will reduce your excess to ZERO.

vauxhall cascada

Vauxhall Cascada

Hertz are one of the most highly rated companies online. You can hire a brand new Cascada from them for £352.04.

Online Rating: 8.0/10
Excess: €1278.34
Deposit: €1278.34 held on your credit card
Fuel Policy: Full to Full
Mileage Policy: Unlimited
Pick Up: Desk in terminal, car in car park

This is a high excess and im afraid the cost to reduce to ZERO is high too at €49.03 per day.

Mini Convertible

Sixt are one of the biggest household names in Europe, with them you can hire a Mini Cabrio for £409.50. A little out of my price range but acceptable to some im sure.

Online Rating: 6.3/10
Excess: €750
Deposit: €750 held on your credit card
Fuel Policy: Full to Full
Mileage Policy: Limited to 800 KMs per rental
Pick Up: Desk in terminal, car in car park

You can reduce your excess liability to ZERO with Sixt for just €14.99 per day.

Or Similar

You will hear the phrase ‘or similar’ when hiring a car. This means the supplier can give you pretty much any make of car providing it meets the original specification that you booked. For example, If you book the Volkswagen Golf Convertible, this is a compact, 3 door, 5 seat convertible car with air con. You could end up with an Audi A3 Cabrio, Ford Focus CC, Vauxhall Cascada or indeed any other vehicle they have on fleet which meets the requirements. If they do not have an ‘or similar’ vehicle they should offer a free upgrade.

Full To Full Fuel Policy

When hiring a car with a full to full fuel policy the supplier will ask for a small deposit of between €60 to €100 depending ont he size of the fuel tank. You are then expected to the return the vehicle full and your deposit will be refunded. This generally is the most straight forward way, but its not always plain sailing, have a read of this more for information on Full to Full Fuel Policies.

La Costa Verde – The Green Coast of Spain – Travelling Diary

Spain is one of the most popular holiday destinations due to its reliable climate, beautiful beaches and good value food and drink. When we think Spain we normally think of traditional and familiar holiday destinations such as Benidorm, Magaluf, Marbella, Tenerife etc on the Costa Del Sol, Costa Blanca, in Majorca or the Canary Islands. Less familiar but infinitely more beautiful is La Costa Verde, or the Green Coast in Northern Spain.

If you prefer a less commercial holiday, with breathtaking scenery and cooler temperatures the aptly named Green Coast may be more to your taste. This is the name given to the Coastal strip in the North of Spain lying north of the Cantabrian and Basque mountains, along the Bay of Biscay. This land strip includes Asturias, Cantabria and the northern half of the Basque country from Galicia through to the French border. Although you are more likely to see rain in this area than the rest of Spain, especially through the summer months the sun is out most of the time and the sea is warm enough to swim.

It is the warm, moist climate that has created the forests and rich vegetation that give this region its name and it is a very popular holiday resort for the Spanish. The area has many old and elegant seaside towns, and a dramatic landscape featuring tiny, isolated coves along the coast and inland mountains and forests. Beauty, unique gastronomy, tradition, and rural essence are the the components of the Green Coast.

There are several airports from which you can start your journey, renting a car to have the opportunity to travel around the area, either on a circular route and dropping back at the same airport or maybe picking up from one airport and dropping off at another. Asturias, La Coruña, Santiago de Compostela, Vigo, Oviedo, Santander, Bilbao and San Sebastian are all airports along the Costa Verde.

Green Spain is for travellers who want the beach, but also want to see more authentic Spain, and you will be surprised at the greenness and lusciousness of the countryside. The Green Coast is often described as the green beauty of the Scottish Highlands but with sun!!!

Asturias and Cantabria are two Northen Regions that share Green Spain´s most picturesque mountains, the Picos de Europa, along with pastoral landscapes of river valleys and gorges, misty hills and an unspoilt coast. A driving holiday would be perfect and why not treat yourself and rent a cabriolet to really make the most of the scenery, with the sun on your face and the wind in your hair. Fabulous.

There are many choices of places to stay, one of the best things about Spain is the variety and value of accommodation. You can go low budget from approximately 20 euros per night for a double room, but even a four or 5 star hotel will cost you less than you think, maybe only 40/45 euros if not in peak season. Try www.littlehotels.co.uk/spain/ for economic hotels with character and charm, or there are many cottages and villas for rent, Sites such as www.ownersdirect.co.uk are also informative and useful.

Renting a car means that you can travel around, driving in Spain is generally a pleasure as there is a noticeable absence of traffic outside the big cities due to the fact that Spain is a huge country with a small population. With a car, you can make sure you make the most of your trip to the exquisite Green and often forgotten Coast of Spain.

If you are interested in hiring a car for your trip to Spain or indeed anywhere in the world and need some guidance in terms of vehicles or any other special requirements then our reservation agents will be happy to assist you. Car Hire In Spain This Summer

The phrase ‘Car Hire in Spain‘ has recently had a lot of tabloid space and social interaction and for the most part, for very good reason.

When you are not sure what to look for it can be a bit of a minefield when booking a hire car, especially in a country like Spain which is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.

The first priority of the majority of people we speak to is price, the initial price has to fit in their budget which is totally understandable but before people speak to Indigo they generally assume that the price advertised is the only cost that needs to be considered. This is not the case with most suppliers:

Generally on top of the rental cost you should be aware of the below costs or deposits:

Deposit: An amount held against you card in local currency for security, usually the same amount of your excess. Can range between £150 and £1500.

Fuel Policy: Most suppliers will fill the tank for you and either charge you for the fuel or ask for a deposit until the vehicle is returned full.

Age Restrictions: Some suppliers charge a fee if you are over 75 or under 25, this could be as much as £20 per day.

Additional Insurance: Not a mandatory cost but some I thought I would mention as this can have a direct affect on the total deposit you have to leave, some suppliers only take a depsoit of the excess amount so by reducing this amount you are reducing the deposit. This could cost upwards of £10 per day.

Queue Jump: One particular supplier offers a queue jump to avoid the notorious delays at their desks, this is around 40 euros and can only be booked in advance, so you could be paying out for nothing or you could be saving yourself 2 hours waiting around in the heat.

Make yourself aware of all of the above costs before booking with any supplier, some of them may word their terms to avoid giving actual costs, this is when you should pick up the phone to us as we can tell you exactly what your outlay will be.

Below are the rental costs that you should expect to pay for a small car in Spain in August, based on a 2 week rental.

Malaga Apt – £19 Per Day

Alicante Apt – £20 Per Day

Murcia Apt – £21 Per Day

Girona Apt – £25 Per Day

Barcelona Apt – £26 Per Day

Madrid Apt – £26 Per Day

Remember these costs are not representative of the total you will have to shell out on the day, so when comparing prices, do so with all of the above in mind.

If you have any questions or you are interested in hiring a car and need some guidance then our reservation agents will be happy to assist you. Contact us directly by calling +44 (0)113 880 0748 or emailing us at sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk and we will get right back to you.

Convertible Car Hire

TOP DOWN, SUN ON YOUR FACE, WIND THROUGH YOUR HAIR-SOUNDS GOOD? -WHY NOT RENT A CONVERTIBLE?

There are not many better feelings than those driving a convertible can give you- weather permitting of course!! Although the weather in the UK is not often condusive to open top driving, if you are jetting off to sunnier climes and are thinking of renting a car, you may be surprised at the range of convertibles we have to offer at Indigo Car Hire, at very competitive prices.

You work hard all year, and your holiday is the time to pamper yourself and let your hair down, and you can do both in a fabulous convertible which will make you feel like a film star as you make the most of your well-deserved break. Maybe at last the kids are older and not going with you, so you dont´t have to think about a “sensible” car any more. Or maybe you don´t have children yet so have a little bit more budget to spend on yourself. Or perhaps you just feel like showing off a bit and why not.

At Indigo we can provide most types of converibles, from low end to prestige, both in the UK and abroad. Audi, Opel, Peugeot, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and even Porche and Jaguar convertibles and coupes can be rented from us if your heart so desires and your budget allows.

Some destinations are just made for convertibles. Make your American road trip Thelma and Louise Style, or meander through the pretty villages of Europe with the top down, sky over your head and a good view of everything. Even if your holiday is more City based, show off in a convertible as you drive around. Night time driving in a warm country after the sun has gone done with your music loud will certainly attract romantic attention if that is what you are looking for!!

The Costa Blanca in Spain is another perfect destination for driving a convertible. Heavy traffic is unlikely even in the peak season, so it is the perfect place to make the most of your ultimate driving experience. Driving south along the coast road from Alicante airport the view is fantastic of the beaches, the salt lakes, and you can make the most of this with an unrestricted view. Other ideal convertible destinations are Italy, France, Greece, Cyprus – all are ideal holidays with picturesque views for you to really enjoy driving while you are there.

A Peugot 308 convertible will cost you approximately 400 euros for six days in August, the peak season, from Alicante airport, and a Fiat 500 covertible only 295, which is excellent value for the time of year. Remember also that in Spain convertible weather probably starts May/June time and continues through to October, and the same Peugeot car would cost you only around 240 euros in September.

Why not treat yourself? If you don´t, who else will?

If you are interested in hiring a car and need some guidance in terms of convertibles then our reservation agents will be happy to assist you. Contact us directly by calling +44 (0)113 880 0748 or emailing us at sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk and we will get right back to you.

Paying With A Business Debit Card

Paying With A Business Debit Card

There are many locations across the globe where we have managed to arrange a deal that will allow us to take a debit card given that it meets certain restrictions. We have announced this several times before but one of the major difficulties when it comes to debit card car hire the card typically has to be in your name which means the name that is printed on your card must match your identification when you produce it at the counter.

One problem presented by this is that travel is often for businesses purposes and many will want to use a business debit card to pay for their expenses. Usually you would be rejected straight away but we tried to look further into this as we felt there should be some form of exception when it comes to business travel.

This is also a similar issue to many Canadian and Malaysian bank accounts which occasionally don’t have a name on the card.

We have managed to arrange deal which means you are allowed to pay with a business debit card in some circumstances as long as you have proof that the card does in fact belong to you and you are authorised to use it, this can be proved by a letter from the bank.

Most of the locations that we can arrange this for are in Spain but its hit and miss, which is why we ask you to contact us well in advance so we can contact the specific branch you are looking to hire from and inform them of your situation to check whether your card will be accepted.

If you are looking to hire and only have business card or your card doesn’t have a name on it then please contact us on +44 (0)113 880 0748 or alternatively you can email us at sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk.

Why is the deposit so high on rental cars in Spain?

This is a question that pops up quite regularly from potential customers that have used other providers in the past.

Most car hire suppliers take a deposit before you drive away in their vehicle and for good reason, they are trusting the hirer with a car worth tens of thousands of pounds so they need some reassurance, i think we can all understand that.

Deposits can come in different forms, some suppliers will ask for a credit card and take an amount of money to be refunded when the vehicle is returned, some will only hold or freeze an amount on the card a bit like a hotel, others will not take a deposit at all providing you take out the full insurance coverage.

As for the amount of the deposit, this can vary massively for multiple reasons: The supplier, the type of vehicle, the type of insurance coverage, the payment type you are using or simply how long you are hiring for..

Here are some examples:

We use 1 supplier that will take a depsoit from your card for the full amount of the excess liability, so the bigger or better the car the higher the deposit – up to €2000 Euros. So, if you reduce your excess for the additional daily fee you may not have to leave a deposit at all.

Another supplier we use holds a standard €600 Euros on your card until the vehicle is returned no matter which vehicle you hire.

Our most popular offering is with a major name in the business who only take a deposit for fuel, so the amount depends on the size of the tank but would typically be between €60 and €100 Euros.

So in answer to the the question, Why is the deposit so high on rental cars in Spain? It doesn’t have to be, you just need to be paired with the supplier that suits your needs which is exactly what Indigo do with every customer, just bear in mind that the cheapest price at the top of the comparison list isnt necessarily the best option for you as most comparison sites do not compare anything but the rental cost and there are many other things to consider.

If you have any questions about deposits or car hire in general then speak to one of our experts, you can call us on +44 (0)113 880 0748, chat with us online or email us at sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk.

Fuel Policies In Spain Are Changing

Fuel Policies In Spain

There has been a lot of media attention on car hire in recent years, most notably on fuel policies in Spain and how people feel ripped off when having to pay for a full tank of fuel when they collect their car and are asked to return it empty.

This poses a few problems, the main one being that they will not refund you for any fuel left in the vehicle. So if like me, you hire a car on holiday solely to get you to and from the airport, you are not going to use a tank of fuel, this means you have paid between €60 and €100 Euros for something that you are never going to use, this is quite an obvious way of the suppliers bumping up their income, they also benefit from any fuel left in the vehicle because they do not have the whole tank to fill for the next victim…. erm, paying customer.

You may do quite a bit of driving on holiday meaning a tank of fuel on arrival is helpful, the problem for this type of customer is simply the cost of the fuel, the charge for the tank of fuel is inflated over and above the average pump prices, if you were to pick up the car virtually empty and drive a few miles to the nearest filling station you would find filling the car up would be €10 to €20 cheaper.

The final issue that affects most drivers is the returning empty part, even the most frugal of customers will not want to run out of fuel on the way back to the airport so when the light comes on you will force yourself to put a few litres in just to get you back to the airport. Again the hire company is the only beneficiary…

Recent stories like these from the Guardian and the Daily Mail have put the spotlight on suppliers and it seems to be making a difference.

At the turn of the year one of the biggest budget suppliers in Spain, Goldcar released a new fuel policy. ‘Pre-Purchase Fuel With Refund’ meaning you still pay upfront for a tank of fuel but are entitled to a refund for the fuel that remains in the vehicle when you return, minus an administration fee. The rate per litre for the refund has not been published nor has the amount of the administration fee. To me this smells of them just finding another way to make it look like they are doing good, but actually still a bit of a con.

Other budget suppliers are following suit, all with similar terms to Goldcar.. I think its a good thing that they are listening to their customers and doing something about the Full-Empty policies but i still dont see that they are doing enough to look out for their customers… But why should they?

Budget car hire suppliers are the same as budget airlines in many ways, they offer a basic service for a low cost and then start to add the extra’s.. you want a baby seat? Of course sir, that will be €50. Sat Nav? No Problem, €50.

Fuel is slightly different as it is not your choice whether they fill the tank or not, so for me the cost of a mandatory tank of fuel should be included in advertised the cost of the rental car.

Budget suppliers need to make a profit just like any other business, so next time you are looking for quotes make sure you are taking all of the costs involved into consideration.

You Do Have A Choice

Quite understandably the majority of us are always looking for the best deal when spending money, be it the weekly shop, mobile phone contacts or travelling, but is budget really the way to go?

There are suppliers in Spain that are based at the airport and not a few miles away, they offer newer vehicles not older untidy cars, they offer full to full fuel policies not the rip off full to empty and they don’t have 2 hour long queues…

They are not budget suppliers they are the big boys, the Avis’ and Europcars of this world and you might be surprised how little the difference is when taking everything into account. Below are 2 quotes that i have done today factoring in all costs and other things to bear in mind. You tell me which one you would prefer…

Location: Alicante Airport
Pick Up: 9th May 2014 – 10.00am
Drop Off: 16th May 2014 – 10.00am
Vehicle: Economy – VW Polo Or Similar

Budget Supplier – Gold Car
Cost Of Vehicle: £51.17
Mandatory Tank Of Fuel: €60-€100
Excess Liability: €0
Mileage: Unlimited
Deposit: €600 Held On Card
Average Time At The Desk: 90 Mins
Additional Driver: €3.5 Per Day – Maximum €70
Child Seat: €6 Per Day – Maximum €72
Excess Reduction: N/A
Young Driver 21-24: €5 Per Day – Maximum €60

Premium Supplier – Europcar
Cost Of Vehicle: £111.39
Fuel Deposit: €60-€100 Returned When The Vehicle Is Returned Full Of Fuel
Excess Liability: €800
Mileage: Unlimited
Deposit: €150 Held On Card
Average Time At The Desk: 20 Mins
Additional Driver: €9 Per Day – Maximum €64
Child Seat: €9 Per Day – Maximum €64
Excess Reduction: €18 Per Day
Young Driver 21-24: €18 Per Day – Maximum €175

This tells us a number of things:

  • If you are looking for the lowest rental price, the budget supplier is for you.
  • If you do not have a large amount of money and want more spending money for your holiday then the premium supplier is for you, yes the rental cost is higher but the deposit is a lot lower.
  • If you want peace of mind without paying additional fees to reduce your excess, the budget supplier is the one.
  • If you are in a hurry to get to the beach and make the most of your holiday then the premium supplier would be better for you.
  • If you are under 25 then the budget supplier would be your cheaper option.

Obviously this is just week from one location comparing 2 suppliers. There are many many variables to consider before booking your car and all of them can change depedning on the car you require, how long you are hiring for, your age and the most common one being, your payment type.

Take Our Advice

As a company we look at all of your options, we will match you with a supplier that meets your requirements and offers the best value for your needs. This may not always appear to be the cheapest option but in our experience, cheapest is not always whats best for you.

If you have any questions about this or anything to do with car hire then please speak to one of our experts, you can call us on +44 (0)113 880 0748, chat with us online or email us on sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk.

Visa Electron Cards Accepted At Alicante Airport

Visa Electron

Limited but not impossible, Visa Electron cards being accepted for renting a car has been a tricky thing to organise in the past but for some time now we have been able to accept electron cards however many people are unaware of this. In the past Electron cards have always been a big no from all rental companies across the globe so people tend to naturally assume that we are unable to supply you a car with one, however there is one airport that this is not the case, Alicante Airport.

Alicante Airport is one of the busiest airports for car hire in the world, there are nearly 10 million passengers that travel to the Spanish airport each and every year. It’s a well-known location for having low cost suppliers who supply car hire without a credit card, in which several suppliers we work with offer this.

We can however now happily announce that we accept electron cards, however you need to let us know well in advance as this is only through one supplier and they can have limited availability due to their low prices. This is a very rare offer and is not available in most locations across the world, but now thanks to Indigo Car Hire if you have a visa electron card then you can now hire.

If you are interested in renting a car with an electron card please give us as much notice as possible, we will guide you through every step of the process and get you the best priced car hire. All you have to do is simply contact our friendly, experienced and knowledgeable reservation agents on +44 (0)113 880 0748 or email us at sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk and we will answer any questions you may have about hiring a car in Alicante Airport with an electron card.

Do not book online, this specialist offer is only available over the phone through our reservations team.
