The Canary Island’s are back so hire a car in the Canaries

HIRE A CAR IN THE CANARIES

Canary Islands placed back on the Government Travel Corridor list, as is Car Hire in the Canaries.

Since the announcement yesterday made by the UK government we have seen a trickle of reservations for the Winter Sun destination.

It is clear people have mixed feelings about travelling overseas again.

We all know destinations can be removed as quickly as they are added to the so called ‘Green list’.

For some the risk is too high for others the temptation of sunnier climates a break from life’s recent experiences is too tempting.

If your foot is in the latter camp then turning from traditional transfers to car rental may be a sensible alternative.

Perhaps worth considering the current public transport restrictions.

Those of us that know the Islands know that there is much to explore off the beaten track. This is where hiring a car pay dividends.

We at Indigo have been doing car hire in the Canaries for the past 11 years.

We know all the upside’s and potential downsides.

Deposit levels / excess levels and the best way / most cost effective way of protecting yourself / on or off airport pick up’s / methods of deposit whether it is credit card, debit card, charge charges / fair fuel policy / cost of additional extras (baby seats, GPS, additional drivers) and much more)

For advice please feel free to get in touch with one of our experienced and trusted car rental consultants.

Flybe Customers Told Not To Travel To The Airport…

Flybe refunds and travel arrangements

Flybe enters administration

This morning, on the 5th March, airline provider Flybe released a statement to confirm that they had entered administration. All Flybe customers were advised not to travel to the airport unless other arrangements had been organised. The statement went on to say that there would be no alternative flights arranged by Flybe. So, what happens next if you have a flight arranged with Flybe in the near future?

Alternative travel arrangements for Flybe customers and staff

You have a few choices for alternative travel arrangements. Firstly, if you are travelling on a domestic flight in the UK, you may be able to get a free train ticket. FirstGroup, which is the largest rail operator in the UK, have announced that if you can prove you had a flight booked with Flybe within the next week, you are eligible to travel on their trains for free. You will need to have a boarding pass or another valid proof that you have booked a flight for these dates, Flybe staff can just show their staff ID for the same offer. Another rail provider, LNER, have also offered free rail travel for Flybe customers throughout the 5th March.

Secondly, easyJet are offering a free flight for any customers or staff that are due to fly on the 5th March. If you are travelling after the 5th March, easyJet will allow Flybe customers to fly for £65 up until the end of May. On this flight you will be allowed to take a 15kg hold bag with you.

Can I get a refund for my Flybe booking?

If none of that helps you, the only other thing you can do is re-book a flight with a different company. The good news is, you may be able to get a refund for some or all of your money. If you have travel insurance, there is a good chance you will be covered and will get a refund. With that being said not every supplier covers cancelled flights due to an airline collapse, but it is worth checking, if you have travel insurance. Secondly, you can apply to your credit or debit card provider and they may be able to reimburse you. Finally, if you bought your holiday as package from a 3rd party, separate to Flybe, you may also be eligible for a refund due to ATOL protection.

How Reliant Are You On Your Car?

How Reliant Are You On Your Car? Research has suggest that now a record number of people are relying on their car or van to get them to work with 16.7 million workers in England and Wales making their way to their offices by either driving themselves or catching a lift. This accounts for a staggering 62.7% of employed people between the ages of 16-74. Wales has the most reliant figure of 74.2% whereas in contrast in London that goes down all the way to 29.8%.

People who tend to commute by car are generally in more rural areas which is understandable as transport links are minimal, however in large cities such as London people use alternative methods to get to work.

Many people are calling for something to be done by local councils as the cost of running a car has outstripped wage inflation which could potentially put people off taking up employment as the commute could just be unaffordable. This is highlighted in the research that shows some of the poorest car owning households spend more than a quarter of their wage on buying and running a vehicle.

As the dependency of cars goes on the increase as many find their car essential for getting to work then it’s also worth lining up a backup plan if possible.

The winter weather is soon about to hit the UK and apparently we are to experience heavy storms, this will increase your chance of a break down and we have few tips for those who are dependent on their cars over this winter period.

1. Always carry in your car a AA Car Essentials Winter Car Kit with Folding Snow Shovel

2. Keep a note of breakdown companies and get your vehicle covered by them, however be aware that it could take a while for them to reach you as they have a massive increased amount of calls.

3. Hire a 4×4 car can tackle the harsh conditions much easier and it may be worth considering hiring one in order to get around if the forecast is bleak.

4. Keep previsions in your car such as a warm blanket, some long lasting food.

5. Make sure your car has winter tyres and snow chains.

Please be careful this winter as the dependency on cars increases so will the traffic and overall accidents on the road this winter, Stay Safe!

3 Reasons to Visit Northern Europe this Summer

Reasons to Visit Northern Europe this Summer

We all have a tendency to stick with what we know. That might be just fine when it comes to picking out clothes or choosing where to go for dinner, but it should never be the guiding light in planning your next holiday destination.

If you’re going to hire a car and go exploring this summer, consider setting your GPS for the majesty of Northern Europe.

Reasons to Visit Northern Europe this Summer

1. You Need to See Something New
Visiting one of Europe’s iconic cities this summer might take you somewhere new, but surely not to somewhere you’ve never heard of before.

Northern Europe, by contrast, is a buried treasure of vibrant cities, cultures, and landscapes that have been largely overlooked by the tourist industry. Try visiting Tallinn in Estonia, one of Europe’s best preserved medieval towns.

Or stand beside five perfectly preserved Viking ships, pulled from Denmark’s Fjords, in the city of Roskilde. If you’re ready for a spectacular drive to the north of Sweden, you can stay in Kiruna’s ice hotel and marvel at the midnight sun.
Visit Northern Europe this summer and see something really new.

2. You Want to Escape the Crowds
Sooner or later, people are going to figure it out. For now, however, Norther Europe is still a haven from the crowds that flock to Paris, London and Rome in the summer months.

Finland is celebrating its hundredth year of independence, so this summer is the perfect time to pay a visit to Helsinki and enjoy the celebrations.

While you’re in the general neighbourhood, check out the sights of Stockholm where admission to many of the state-owned museums is now free. You can avoid the line-ups, congestion and stress that come with the more traditional European destinations by heading north.

3. You’re Looking for Some Fresh Air
If you’re going to take a visit to Northern Europe this summer, we guarantee you won’t be spending all of your time indoors.
That’s because so many of the Scandinavian and Baltic countries are renown for their spectacular natural beauty. The very best way to really see the place is to hire a car and hit the road. Ocean, forest, mountains, fjords, volcanoes and glacial valleys all await you in Northern Europe.

And here’s a bonus fourth reason to visit Northern Europe this summer. The sun is up half the night, so it feels like you’re getting twice as much holiday time. Try it, we’re not kidding!

If you’re planning to hire a car for your holiday in the Northern Europe bare in mind that Indigo Car Hire covers all major airports and cities. Contact us over the phone on +44 (0)113 880 0748 or via email on sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk to get the latest offers available.

5 Best Tourist Destinations in the World

Yorkshire Car Hire

I have seen many news items and PR stories about the Best Tourist Destinations in the World and they all seem to have their own spin on where you should go and what you should see. So, here is our 5 Best Tourist Destinations in the World in no particular order based on our own experiences.

Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, was home to the 2010 Fifa World Cup and part of it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a stunning, bustling city with lots to do and see.

For a change of pace you can go on the cable car to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain, where the scenery will take your breath away and the day to day troubles of life are put aside for a while. You can then return to the city find a bar where everyone gets lost in the rhythm of the salsa and dances until the early hours of the morning.

Sydney, Australia

Be a beach bum in the morning, tourist in the afternoon and culture vulture in the evening, in Sydney you can be whatever you want to be and still manage to blend in.

This city is often the first port of call for visitors and it rolls out a brilliant welcome mat. Sydney Opera House, Manly Beach and the Blue Mountains are just a snippet of the list of things to do here.

Cape Town, South Africa

The most southern point of Africa where you can see all of the sea life you could ever wish for, go to the top of Table Mountain and see the spectacular views in the world or enjoy a visit to one of the many vineyards and taste some of the best wines produced in the world today.

Robben Island, the historic prison where Nelson Mandela was held, is a ‘must do, for any visitor.

Paris, France

The ‘City of Romance’ Paris has more tourist attractions than anyone can see in one brief holiday. With a city based apartment and a couple of months you may get around to seeing some of the less well known treasures of this city and not just the Eiffel Tower and Louvre. Some of the restaurants here serve food and wine that will change the way you think about what you consume forever.

Yorkshire, England

Obviously not being biased at all… 🙂 Yorkshire has won the award for Europe’s Leading Tourist Destination twice in the past and was also the hosted the Grand Depart back in 2014.

Yorkshire features over 800 attractions, from World Heritage Sites to mining museums, ruined castles and abbeys, to hands on museums. You’ll find serene gardens and unique breweries, thrilling rides and industrial heritage.

From attractions and museums to sports and galleries, from the history-lover to the inquisitive child, there’s something for everyone.

What would make your list of the 5 Best Tourist Destinations in the World? Let us know, maybe they will make our list next time..

Travelling Can Be More Expensive Without A Hire Car

132014 Travelling Can Be More Expensive Without A Hire Car

With the school holidays coming to a close and the time for family holidays almost over, its that time of year that those of us without children or children that are not yet in school decide to go away. There are many reasons for this but the main one is cost, we all know that travelling during school holidays is more expensive as harsh as it may seem, its a fact.

So when planning a holiday outside of the summer break what else do we do to save money? One thing that seems to pop up is deciding not to hire a car, im here today to show you how Travelling Can Be More Expensive Without A Hire Car.

When you consider all expenses of a holiday, some that are often over looked are transport costs such as airport transfers, buses, trains and taxis.

Airport Transfers

Unless you are visiting family or friends that may come and collect you, you will probably need transport from the Airport when you arrive. After checking a few of the popular websites for a typicaly family holiday, here is what I found.

Return Journey: Alicante Airport to Torrevieja, Family of 4. 01/10/2014 to 07/10/2014 = €120 Euro Best Price

Public Transport

Once at your destination, again without family or friends with a vehicle you will find yourselves geting a bus or taxi when going out for the day to the beach, waterpark or for a bit of sight seeing. Here are some basic costs I found.

Bus, Single Ticket: €1.5 Euro per person including infants for a short journey. So thats €6 Euro for the family per journey.

Taxi, Single Journey €15-20 Euro for a relatively short journey to the beach from a popular area like San Miguel to the beach at Playa de los Naufragos which is about 15km.

Train, Single Journey €30 Euro per person for a single journey from Alicante to Valencia, thats €120 Euro for the family.

As you can can see, travelling around your chosen holiday destination on public transport could add up to be quite costly. So lets have a look at hiring a car…

Small Car for 7 Days from Alicante Airport the cost on our website right now is £38.77 which is about €49 Euro. You will have to pay for a tank of fuel on top of that which would cost around €60-80 Euro. So a total cost of about €129 Euro.

A tank of fuel in a small city car like a Ford Ka could get you upwards of 600kms of driving, that is a lot of trips to the beach, shopping centres and waterparks.

Obviously my examples are specific to one area but the theory does translate to almost any trip, before you decide to travel do some research into how much basic transport will cost you and then weigh that up against the cost of hiring a car and not having to worry about any other transport costs.

You can check our website for hire car prices in pretty much any location around the world, or just pick up the phone and call +44 (0)113 880 0748 or chat with one of our experts online for a free no obligation quote.

Knaresborough’s mystery legends and folklore

After visiting Harrogate last weekend, we had to continue the West Yorkshire adventure and the next stop was the nearby Town of Knaresborough. We were told about this amazing town, but no words would do justice to its beautiful landscapes.
Again, the car was provided by my colleagues from Indigo Car Hire and I must say that if you plan to visit the entire district we recommend to rent a car that suits you best…
So, let’s start another travelling diary file and explore Knaresborough’s mystery legends and folklore.

Located just a few miles from Harrogate, lies in a magnificent setting built in the gorge of the River Nidd: the lovely little town of Knaresborough. Standing supreme, high on the cliff top overlooking the river, is Knaresborough Castle and down the hill the Bebra Gardens are nestling at the foot of it.

Once a royal residence, it’s said that Richard II was once imprisoned in the keep. The town’s castle is alas now just a ruin, having been destroyed by Cromwell’s forces during the civil war. Today the ramparts provide a glorious view of the Victorian stone railway viaduct and houses inspiring many artists and photographers.

Bebra gardens, the beautifully tended public park located behind castle site, should not be missed. Particularly pleasant is the riverside walk from the gardens down to the viaduct, where you can admire a number of little cafes and restaurants overlooking the river. Boats can be hired on the river during the summer season.

This town has so many interesting sights, including a market square surrounded by historic streets, boating and a mixture of charming buildings and scenic picnic areas. You can visit here the oldest chemist shop in England in the picturesque market square, and enjoy a perfect afternoon in one of the cozy old world tea rooms. And all these shrouded in mystery legends and folklore.

One good example for this is on the opposite side of the river: Mother Shipton’s Cave and the Petrifying Well, England’s oldest tourist attraction, a curious place where the famous prophetess once lived and where you can still see things being turned to stone. Mother Shipton lived 500 years ago during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. As she grew older, her prophetic visions became known and feared throughout England.

As for the Petrifying Well, it is recorded that people travelled great distances to bathe here, as it was believed to have miraculous healing properties, as early as 1538. You’ll be able to see a whole host of everyday objects being turned to stone in the cascading waters of the Petrifying Well. Also visitors don’t forget to make a wish in the wishing well before they go.

The little cafes, great pubs, plenty of independent shops which are scattered throughout the town would make your day. There are boats available for hire, cycle tracks to follow and the riverside walks to be enjoyed. There are also some great annual events including a thriving Wednesday market, FEVA a vibrant 10 day Festival of Entertainment and Visual Arts (that celebrates everything musical and artistic.), the Great Knaresborough Bed Race ( a 3km run through town and river pushing a bed) and of course the Christmas Market.

For more information about hiring a car in West Yorkshire or in any location in UK, please contact us over the phone on +44 (0)113 880 0748 or via email on sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk
