Harrogate the home of flowers and beauty

Last weekend I got together with my friends and we had the idea to travel to a place we never been before in West Yorkshire. So we start researching the web for local attractions and we found out that nearby there is a small town famous for its beauty and its spa heritage. We were both intrigued and fascinated by the small town of Harrogate the home of flowers and beauty. So we started the preparations for our small journey.
When it comes to travelling in West Yorkshire there are plenty of possibilities: from public transportation system to car hire companies. Getting a car was very easy thanks to my colleagues from Indigo Car Hire and we’ve hit the road in short time.

With a cosmopolitan air, Harrogate is charming enough to steal at least a few days out of your vacation. Welcome to one of the UK’s most beautiful destinations! It’s a place where the old embraces the new, where festivals and traditional village shows blend with conferences and fancy events, bringing to town visitors all the year round. Harrogate Arts and Museums for example, have a fabulous summer events planned, with activities to suit all ages at the Royal Pump Room Museum and the Mercer Art Gallery.

Many come to see Harrogate’s fascinating shops in the Montpellier Quarter for antique treasures, high-end fashion, charming arts & crafts shops and bustling markets, others come to admire the splendid architecture or simply to relax in this “home of flowers and beauty”. Spring is a great time to visit when the flowers come into bloom and the Harrogate Flower Show brightens up the town. Lovers of local delicacies shouldn’t miss the Harrogate Specialty Food Show or the Great Yorkshire Show which take place every July, featuring food stalls, livestock and agriculture from around the region.

As I said, this characterful town is full of interesting attractions. The first thing to notice is that this place is alive! People are everywhere, both tourists and dwellers: on the streets, in the parks, at the beautiful restaurants and cafés or shops. They have plenty of things and places to see, Harrogate being one of Yorkshire’s most elegant destinations with handsome historic buildings and verdant gardens. It’s the perfect place to indulge in an antiques hunt or have lunch at the famous Betty’s tearoom, which was established in Harrogate in 1919, with queues still forming for their afternoon teas.

Discover the garden town of Harrogate and its fascinating spa heritage! You can have a picnic in the floral Valley Gardens or you should visit the luxurious Turkish baths. Harrogate is actually known as the historic spa town in North Yorkshire. It grew from a small village in the 1500’s when a spring at Tewitt Well was discovered to be rich in minerals. It became a popular destination for the rich and famous of Yorkshire and continues till nowadays. So make some time for pure relaxation in steam rooms, pool and a freezing plunge pool for braver visitors.

You could manage until here without a car, because it’s easy to walk between all the sightseeing that Harrogate has to offer. But from now on, discovering the district would demand a car. If you’re a tourist, it’s very handy to rent one, because it would be a great loss to be in Harrogate and don’t step into Knaresborough or Nidderdale, too.

Harrogate District is a great experience for a family holiday or a short break, giving you so many reasons to enjoy and relax in the plenty of green open spaces, atmospheric cafés, fine restaurants and heritage from the cozy towns or would hide you away from the daily bustle in the charming countryside with its luscious meadows.

Brussels the European Mecca of chocolate, art and design

For those who want to discover Brussels, they should know that they have many choices: on foot, by bicycle, by car or even by boat. Brussels, the result of a mild blend of 27 different cultures is the most important city at European level, being the Capital of 500 million Europeans.
Its diversity makes this place a magnificent place to have fun, relax, study or work. Brussels is home to almost 90 museums, architecture monuments, beautiful parks and fascinating walks, trendy restaurants and bars, fancy chocolate stores and art galleries.
Brussels the European Mecca of chocolate, art and design as its visitors nicknamed it, is one of Europe’s must-see destinations.

Brussels travel is considered cheaper compared to London and Paris even if it shows the same touch of charm and elegance. Hotel accommodation includes hostels and apartments for rent, star-rated hotels and of course luxury hotels. You can book online before you arrive at very reasonable prices.

Once arrived in Brussels it’s very handy to rent a car

No matter how you plan to arrive to Brussels, it would be quite easy. Brussels Airport and Charleroi Airport both welcome flights from all over the world. High-speed trains are available from London, Paris and Amsterdam and you can even get there by ferry! Once arrived in Brussels it’s very handy to rent a car, just to make your tours easier and more enjoyable.

Nobody can visit Brussels without seeing The Grand Place, surrounded by the city tower and a range of beautiful 300 year old buildings. It will be hard not to notice the delicious smell of the “gaufre de Liège-Luikse waffle” here (Belgian waffle with caramelized sugar)—the best ones are available from the little shops situated all over the Grand Place-Grote Markt. There are many other places to visit nearby like Manneken Pis (the small bronze statue of a child performing one of Nature’s most basic functions, thought to represent the “irreverent spirit” of Brussels) or the Saint-Hubert Galleries (The world’s first shopping mall, opened in 1847, full of boutiques, bookshops, cafés, restaurants, a theater and cinema), but hiring a car for the rest would confer you a confortable and complete journey. Choosing what to leave behind can be a very difficult thing so you shouldn’t cut too many sightseeing from your list if you don’t want to regret later.

For example, you’ll need a car to go from The Grand Place towards the Laeken district for visiting the magnificent St. Michaels’ cathedral, the Royal Residence, the Chinese Pavillion, the Japanese Tower and the world-famous Atomium. This unavoidable icon of Brussels and Belgium is a unique creation in the history of architecture and emblematic vestige of the World Fair in Brussels. Five of the nine spheres are open to the public and the upper sphere offers spectacular views of the city of Brussels and not only. The view reaches till Antwerp when the sky is clear. On the way back to the city center visit the Sablon district with its elegant stores selling beautiful antiques. You can’t miss any of the cosmopolitan quarters of Brussels where various cultures mix in this marvellous blend of nationalities, cultures, arts, music and gastronomy.

Now that we’re speaking about gastronomy, we do have to bring Chocolate into discussion! The bohemian paved streets highlight the charming chocolate stores, were chocolate candies are being exposed like genuine jewelries in breathtaking showcases. Don’t be surprised when you buy if they’ll be handed to you by their creator wearing elegant white gloves and a mysterious smile that hides the secret recipe of these delicious masterpieces. After you have found out that Brussels denizens worship chocolate, you’ll see also that beer is another Belgian passion which won’t be missing from any restaurant or bar. Just like seafood.

If you are interested in hiring a car for your trip to Brussels or anywhere in Belgium and need guidance in terms of vehicles or any other special requirements then our reservation agents will be happy to assist you. Cyprus an all inclusive holiday destination – Travelling Diary

Strong essences are kept in small bottles. This is Cyprus: a small island in the Mediterranean Sea that has something unique to offer for each of us! Sea lovers, mountain lovers, good food lovers, history and mythology lovers, hikers and bikers you’ll all find a home in this little paradise.
There are two important questions to ask when planning a vacation to Cyprus: where to go and when to go? Cyprus has a subtropical climate with very mild winters and warm to hot summers. If you’re chasing the beach, hot summers are the perfect time for you. If you’re interested more in visiting the archaeological sites from the historic old towns and villages and meet the Cypriot hospitality you should probably visit Cyprus during the spring or autumn when the temperature is mild and enjoyable. You could visit Troodos Mountains, too. This is the only period when you can see its villages, its painted churches and monasteries in a fresh green landscape. If you’re more like a snow lover, visit the Troodos Mountains during the winter because with a bit of luck, snow is possible.

Hire a car in Cyprus is an easy process

All right! So you got there! Travelling to Cyprus is very easy to everyone. Many major airline companies provide frequent flights, especially during the summer period, so this shouldn’t be a problem for you either. Unfortunately one of the first things you should know at your arrival is that public transportation in Cyprus is not quite great despite the fact that the country is very small: it measures 240 kilometres (149 mi) long from end to end and 100 kilometres (62 mi) wide. This is actually a result of the fact that almost everyone in Cyprus drives a car. And that would be probably the best solution for you, too if you want to be sure you won’t spend 3 hours changing 2-3 buses to go from a specific point in town A to another point in town B. Renting a car is handy, very affordable and give you the freedom to hold Cyprus in the palms of your hands. Hire a car in Cyprus with Indigo is now very easy due a large number of locations all over the island which includes: Protaras, Paphos, Larnaca, Limassol, Famagusta, Nicosia, Paralimni and Ayia Napa. If you want to hire a car straight from the airport you can do it from both Northern Cyprus Ercan Airport, or the South part of the Island in : Larnaca Airport, Paphos Airport.

Now you’re only minutes away from the most popular beaches, restaurants, night clubs and of course, your accommodation. Don’t miss the chance of tasting this vivid island life and the spectacular sandy beaches from Agia Napa, Protaras and Paralimni. Here places like Nissi Beach or Cavo Greco are simply unforgettable. On the other hand Cyprus has to show also his wild and quiet beaches in Pafos and Akamas, ideal for those seeking relaxation. If you get close to the southwest coast in the Pafos you must visit Petra tou Romiou known as Aphrodite’s birthplace a geological formation of huge rocks. It alsowould be a pity not to visit Akamas Peninsula and the forests of Tilliria which are two of the island’s great wilderness areas. A Jeep Safari would be the best option for you if you don’t mean to miss a great adventure in this unique place on earth.
If you’re more attracted to the city life you shouldn’t postpone visiting Paphos , Limassol and Larnaka. They come with a complete sightseeing package: shops and restaurants, pretty harbours, elegant promenades, historical monuments, ancient ruins, art galleries, ancient museums all by the seaside. You should maybe end this tour with Girne (Kyrenia), the most beautiful harbour town on the island. But again, visiting all this places without giving up on your comfort at the same time, definitely requires a car.

If you are interested in hiring a car for your trip to Cyprus or anywhere in the world and need guidance in terms of vehicles or any other special requirements then our reservation agents will be happy to assist you. Choosing The Right Size Hire Car

Choosing The Right Size Hire Car

What Size Hire Car Do You Need? – Choosing The Right Size Hire Car

When Choosing The Right Size Hire Car we need, at the time of booking the main thing we usually consider is the price for obvious reasons. But sometimes booking the cheapest car available is not always the best option.

Booking the wrong hire car because it is easier on the purse strings can end up costing more in the long run, if you turn up to collect your vehicle and your party and luggage cannot fit in the vehicle then you have a problem.

You could upgrade the vehicle there and then but this would be dependent on availability, larger vehicles are less likely to be sat around waiting to be hired because rental companies generally have less of these on their fleet.

Then you have to consider the cost of a last minute upgrade. Booking a larger car in advance generally would be a cheaper option than booking a smaller hire vehicle and then upgrading on the day.

Then again you could be one of the lucky customers who are given a free upgrade automatically because the hire vehicle they booked is no longer available, although this is not something we would advise you hope for ?

There are certain things that a hire company have to guarantee, like the size of vehicle and its engine, the number of doors, if it has air conditioning, manual or automatic and even sometimes the fuel type.

If the company allows you book any of the above specific options then they are basically guaranteeing that your vehicle will come with what you have selected. If you turn up to collect the vehicle and it doesn’t have the diesel engine or 5 doors that you have booked then you are entitled to an upgrade the next available vehicle that has the options that you selected.

Sometimes if a hire company finds themselves in a situation where they do not have the vehicle they need for your hire, they will try and sell you an upgrade before telling you, they will say ‘Hi Mr. Smith, did you know you can upgrade your car today for only £5 per day’ if this happens to me I say NO every time because the likelihood is that you will be given that car anyway.

Here are some tips on Choosing The Right Size Hire Car

Research The Vehicle Type

No car hire company can tell you exactly what vehicle you are going to receive until much closer to the time you are due to collect it. This is mainly down to logistics, hire vehicles move around the country on a regular basis.

When booking the vehicle you will be told a particular model OR SIMILAR, this means if you are booking a Peugeot 107 OR SIMILAR then you could receive a Peugeot 107, Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo, Hyundai i10 or any one of many other Small city cars that are available.

Most rental companies use SIPP codes which are used to summarise the key features of a vehicle, click here to see our guide to SIPP codes.

Are you moving home/office and need more space?

If so then you may want to consider hiring a van rather than a car or an estate. See our tips on hiring a van here.

Are you going on a family trip?

If so then you will probably be looking at hiring a people carrier of an estate vehicle. People carriers come in a number of different shapes and sizes:

A Mini MPV, sometime referred to as a 5+2. This means that although they have 7 seats, 2 of them are fold up seats (suitable for children) situated in the boot/truck of the vehicle. Always bear in mind that if you are going to occupy all 7 seats then there will be minimal room for luggage.

A Standard MPV, 7 Seater. This vehicle will generally have 7 proper car seats with 3 point seatbelts that will be suitable for adults and children. They generally have more space then the Mini MPV again if you are going to occupy all 7 seats then you will struggle to get 7 large pieces of luggage in too.

An Estate, Wagon. This group of vehicle will always have 5 seats and loading space in the back. For a family of 5 with luggage this would be the ideal vehicle.

A Large MPV, Shuttle Bus. These vehicles are generally ‘vans’ with seats in the back and can have 8, 9 or 12 seats. They generally have more space for luggage. Please bear in mind that these vehicles are quite rare with most suppliers so be sure to enquire well in advance of your rental needs.

You don’t have a car for day to day life but need one for a short period of time?

There are many standard vehicles available for hire of between 1 and 28 days. Ranging from small economy hatchbacks right through to large saloon vehicles and prestige/sports cars. Obviously the further up the range you go the more expensive the rate will be. So always consider the following.

Am I just looking for practicality?

If you are just looking for something for yourself and your partner to go away for the weekend, then you will probably find that the small economy vehicles will do, they have small engines and a little amount of space but ideal for a quick blast to the spa with an overnight bag.

Do I need the car to have 4 doors or will 2 be ok?

If you have kids or are planning to take an elderly relative out for the day then you may want to consider 4 doors, it makes life so much easier when getting in and out of the back seats.

How many miles will I be travelling?

If you are planning a longer trip, again you may want to consider a larger vehicle, motorway miles can be quite tiring in a smaller engined car, having to change gear much more often and the once good fuel economy usually flies out of the window when doing long motorway journey. So a larger car with a bigger engine would make the journey that little bit more comfortable and usually more economical.

Is it for business purposes? Hiring a vehicle for business purposes can be straight forward but some issues can arise, so always make sure you discuss your requirements with someone over the phone. In our experience when people are hiring a car for work purposes they usually want to use their managers/directors credit card and this is not acceptable with some hire car suppliers.

Can I drive a manual?

Even if you are used to driving an automatic vehicle, if you do have a valid licence to drive a manual vehicle and are comfortable doing so then it can be advisable to hire a car with a manual transmission. The biggest reason being cost: Automatic vehicles do come at a premium and can sometimes double the cost of your hire. The secondary reason being availability, in the UK and most European countries, automatic vehicles are quite rare and availability is low.

Do I need air conditioning?

Most hire vehicles nowadays will have air conditioning, but some of the smaller groups and economical vehicles may not. If you only need to hire a small vehicle but are considering a larger vehicle because it has air conditioning then consider the following: There are probably 3 months out of the year (in a good year) that you will need air conditioning, and even during this time it is not guaranteed. Sometimes opening the window will do a good enough job.

Gadgets Take Over Holidays

Most people go on holiday to enjoy themselves, relax, kick your feet up and maybe catch some sun if you’re not holidaying in the UK of course. Like many others I often find bringing some of my tech gadgets on holiday with me, whether it’s my phone, laptop or iPod I always have some kind of technology with me, also like many others my holiday comes to an inevitable end and I’m sat almost upset that the holiday has gone so fast and it always happens and I ask myself the question “where has my holiday gone” as if I have just put my life in fast forward.

I believe I may have found the answer to my holiday blues. A survey on us Brits has revealed that on holiday we spend up to 4 hours a day on our tech devices without even really realising this accounts for the loss of two days if you have booked a week’s holiday, mystery solved. The modern travellers aren’t watching the landscapes go by or the culture around them they are merely just tapping away at angry birds on their IPad or checking emails or possibly even taking a few infamous “selfies”.

Just how addicted are we to our tech kit that is resulting in us missing out on our holiday? It has been revealed that 27% of Brits flat out refuse to stay in a hotel if it doesn’t offer free Wi-Fi with many that where surveyed saying that they would much rather choose to be virtually connected than have luxury surroundings. Going for a pint or even a chat at a bar near your holiday resort? By chat I mean on Facebook of course because 30% of Brits yes that’s nearly 1 third of Brits would choose restaurants and bars with Wi-Fi over those without, even if the food is better really? It’s becoming quite scary how connected people actually are.

Once upon a time if you arrived at a hotel and it had free Wi-Fi you pumped your first in the air with a little bit of a victorious smile on your face. Now that’s just simply not enough, its rare now a days that hotels don’t offer free Wi-Fi so us tech users are demanding more, of course. People are checking various things before they book hotel and its slightly more in depth than just free Wi-Fi, they are checking things like the speed of the internet, the quality and wireless capability e.g can they get a tan whilst browsing the latest tweets, no fibre optics? No deal!

Times are changing so fast people aren’t even making the most of their holidays and all down to a few apps and gadgets that they can just as easily use at home. Don’t forget to switch your devices off once in a while and get out before your holiday finishes and your back at home reminiscing of well, nothing.

Things To Do In And Around Leeds When Visiting

With all of the lovely weather we have been having, we in the office have been asking each other for ideas on where to go on an evening or at the weekend on a budget. So here are the best Things To Do When Visiting Leeds.

Below you will find some of the attractions we have come up with and we believe are worth a try when visiting Leeds.

Roundhay Park & Tropical World

Roundhay Park is one of the most popular parks in Leeds due to its size, grandeur and array of things to do and see. The park covers over 700 acres of rolling parkland, lakes, woodlands and formal gardens. The park has cafes, a visitor centre and is also home to the ever popular visitor attraction, Tropical World.

Tropical World is one of the UK’s most popular garden tourist attractions and home to the largest collection of tropical plants outside Kew Gardens. Each year over a million visitors discover exciting new worlds, alien landscapes and exotic plant life – all in the heart of Leeds.

Work has recently been completed on the first phase of a major refurbishment of Tropical World. These changes include the new purpose-built crocodile enclosure, plus a new children’s party and educational area.

The Royal Armouries

Home to Britain’s national collection of arms and armour, the Royal Armouries Museum houses a world-renowned collection of over 75,000 objects. On 30 March 1996, the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds opened to the public. The new building, designed by architect Derek Walker, is the headquarters of the Royal Armouries complex of museums, and houses the majority of the museum’s collections.

Check out the weapons and armour of warriors through the ages from early medieval knights to the modern-day soldier. Discover treasures from around the globe – explore the Ottoman Empire, the Wild West, Europe, Japan and India. Wonder at the fabulous arms and armour of the Japanese shoguns, the royal houses of Europe and the kinds of England including Henry VIII who reigns supreme in our newly refurbished Tournament Gallery.

In addition to the five galleries which house 5,000 objects in the permanent displays and the more recent Peace Gallery, the museum also includes the Hall of Steel, a giant staircase whose walls are decorated with trophy displays composed of 2,500 objects reminiscent of the historical trophy displays erected by the Tower Armouries from the 17th century.

Temple Newsam

Temple Newsam is home to one of the most celebrated historic houses in the country, this Tudor Jacobean mansion has over forty restored rooms open to view. It is steeped in a rich history from its royal links to the lives of the ordinary people who lived and worked on the Estate.

Famous as the birth place of Lord Darnley, notorious husband of Mary Queen of Scots. Described as one of the best in Britain and beautifully restored to its former glory, it is now home to one of the most important collections of decorative arts in Britain.

  • Explore the Mansion, one of the greatest country houses in England and view the stunning collections
  • See a variety of rare breed animals in the Rare Breed Farm
  • Wander around the beautiful gardens

Kirkstall Abbey

Kirkstall Abbey is, one of the most complete examples of a medieval Cistercian abbey in Great Britain. Set in wonderful parkland along the banks of the River Aire, Kirkstall Abbey boasts historic architecture amid a haven of wildlife and greenery.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the grounds or along the river. Participate or just watch some of the formal organised games played on site. Take part in many events held throughout the year. Bring a picnic along or indulge in refreshments on a new terrace overlooking the river.

There are many events held at Kirkstall Abbey throughout the year like classic car shows, charity events and summer fairs, so when visiting Leeds Kirkstall Abbey is a must for a family.

Meanwood Valley Urban Farm

Just a couple of miles outside the city centre, this working farm is great for the kids. Meet the farm animals and see farm practices as they happen, relax in the cafe, wonder through the nature area, have a picnic or even stock up on organic produce.

The farm is based on Meanwood Beck and demonstrates organic and sustainable farming to members of the public, as well as introducing the kids to various aspects of farming and the environment. The animals you will find are Dexter cows, pigs, donkeys, sheep, rabbits and hens.

The main timber building is a resource for the farm and the local community, with offices, exhibition space and meeting rooms. It is a good example of environmentally friendly self build construction creating a low energy consumption building using the principle of solar power. The roof uses a reed bed drainage system and is covered with turf.

Central European Time, A Safer Time?

There are hundreds of car accidents on British roads yearly and new government estimation is that moving to CEST time would save several lives each year and prevents hundreds of accidents. So the changing of time saves lives, let’s do it straight away!

Unfortunately it’s not as easy as just changing the clocks back; it would be difficult for many if you were to just change the time. One big object is that of the aviation authority who say that they would take 5 years to adapt to such a change. Also to take into account is the wider effect to the economy and society.

Despite objections its estimated that it will save a total of 54 lives a year due to not causing as many accidents because of darkness, it’s also claimed that it would prevent around 185 serious road accidents yearly. If it’s a factor of saving lives I for one would turn my clock back all day long but obviously its unfortunately not that simple.

What would changing to CEST (or CET in winter) time mean for the UK?

CEST time is an hour ahead of our current time and CEST stands for Central European Summer Time. This would cause the roads to be lighter in the morning but darker in the night at summer, the idea behind this is that a large amount of drivers drive to work in the morning whilst it’s still dark causing several accidents, however it would be darker at night but in summer it doesn’t get darker till later anyways. The idea is one that will save lives definitely but it also have a huge effect on the UK on a whole.
