Reduced Car Parking Charges In Northern Ireland

parking charges

Lower car parking charges are to be introduced into 25 locations in Northern Ireland for a trial period of up to 6 months.

In total, 93 car parks operated by Roads Service are to charge £1 for five hours parking.

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said it would help attract more shoppers to towns and cities.

The initiative, which comes into operation on Saturday, was first tried over Christmas and New Year.

However, it will exclude Belfast.

Mr Kennedy said: “Local retailers have told me that they are continuing to operate in a challenging environment.

“This will support both the local economy and their efforts to encourage more shoppers back into towns and cities across Northern Ireland.”

Among the town and cities benefiting are Coleraine, Armagh, Ballymena, Enniskillen, Londonderry and Omagh.

Mileage Restrictions

When it comes to hiring a car there are several different terms and conditions, one section which you will come across is about mileage restrictions. Different car rental suppliers have different conditions for the limit on the amount of miles you can do during your rental; you will find that you are given a daily quota of mileage. Most customers never meet this mileage limit but there are a few occasions where you may require a larger mileage allowance.

One question we got recently was to do with the mileage limit for a supplier in Leeds. The customer was picking up the car from Leeds but actually lived around 45 miles away in which they needed to travel home and then travel a 340 mile distance and back so the mileage added up to quite a significant amount and the rental was only for a short period.

Going over your mileage restriction can be quite an expensive thing to do as you get charged an extra amount for each mile you are over your limit. This amount depends purely on the supplier but it can potentially reach a significant figure, and if you are unaware of your mileage limit you won’t be expecting the charge.

There is a solution however which we gave to this customer which was an unlimited mileage policy, often you have to pay extra to increase your mileage quota but we have a better option. Some of the suppliers that we work with offer an unlimited mileage policy for our customers completely free of any charge and this is available in several locations worldwide.

So if you are worried about going over the mileage limit then simply just let us know before booking the car and we will arrange an unlimited mileage deal.

If you are still confused about mileage policies or just have a general question about car hire then simply just call our experienced and knowledgeable reservation agents on +44 (0)113 880 0748 or email us at sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk and they will be happy to answer any questions that you may have about car hire.

New Drivers & Young Drivers

sixt young driver

We recently had someone on our live chat function ask whether they could hire a car at 21 years of age. We can hire to people who are 21 or older in most locations around the world; this usually involves a young driver additional fee though. There is however one significant issue with this, the driver who had enquired had only held their licence for a week prior to wanting to pick up the vehicle.

Although we have managed to arrange car hire in several locations for young drivers who are 21 the requirement is that you must have held your licence for a year prior to doing so. Another thing worth noting in regards to licence is that you can’t have over 6 points or any major convictions within the last 5 years.

The reason we ask for one years experience is simply that the suppliers insurance policies state this, it is similar a similar situation if you where wanting to buy a car with finance, some finance companies require you to be 21 with 1 years driving experience.

If you have held your licence for a year prior to picking up the vehicle and are 21 or above then we can arrange car hire in several locations. There is usually a young drivers fee on top of the rental amount however we have brilliant deals in certain locations where we can reduce this cost or even not charge it at all.

If you are a young driver aged 21 or older and are interested in getting a car then you will need to find out more details about your specific locations as the terms and conditions are different in certain places. If you want to found out all the information on car rental then please call our experienced and knowledgeable reservation agents on +44 (0)113 880 0748 or email us at sales@thealternativeagency.co.uk, they will do all they can to find you the best terms and conditions to meet your needs as well as trying to find you the lowest price possible.

New UK Licence To Deter Fraud

The DVLA (Driving and Vehicle licensing agency) have announced that they are introducing a new photo card driving licence within the United Kingdom. Just like its predecessor it is also the size of a credit card so in terms of size it won’t change, the photocard licence contains a variety of information including the holders full name, date of birth, the vehicle types that the holder is entitled to drive and the period that the licence is valid as you have to renew your photo card every 10 years for identification reasons. Doesn’t seem like much is changing?

Well the changes are more to defer fraud, what they are doing is raising the picture of the licence holder by engraving several layers of the surface in order for it to become harder to replace the picture on a licence. It will be raised to the touch much like that of an embossed debit card, the picture won’t be able to be alter as easy as previous licences as trying to do so will damage the card deeming it invalid, driving licences are commonly forged which is obviously an issue the DVLA take very seriously and this is an attempt to tackle the problem head on, but will it work or will fraudsters find a way around it?

You can request for your licence to be changed to this and some motorists will just be sent the newly issued licence it will also be given to people who have had a change in circumstance like a move of address or change of name as well as those who have an expired licence. You are however not obliged to upgrade to this new card so don’t expect everyone to have it until all the current photo card licences expire.

The photocard was first introduced in 1998 and since has not had too many revisions, and this is going to be one of the major ones although it is sticking to the same format.

Toyota’s Exciting New Technology

A new announcement by the car manufacturer Toyota has not only got car fans excited but also tech fans as they announce they are testing a new wireless batter charging system which has been developed for their vehicles. If there testing is proved a success then so called plug in vehicles would be a thing of the past as cars will simply be able to park and charge with minimal hassle, it will be a major breakthrough.

There will be no need for any connectors or cable, the car would park on a coil set which is in the surface of the ground which will automatically charge it. The design is to ensure that there is a reduced loss of any power transmission efficiency, measures have been taken to reduce electromagnetic interference and also they have made it so that the coils can withstand being driven over (for those of us that aren’t the best at parking).

Although that may be made a lot harder with Toyota’s new Intelligent Parking Assist System which shows you exactly the position of the coils to make parking in the right position to charge even easier. We could be seeing these technologies introduced in the near future in both Toyota and Lexus vehicles across the UK.

Some people are sceptical about how much benefit this will actually have as many don’t see an issue with plugging the car in, but I’m optimistic as it’s a step in the right direction. So called green hybrid/electric vehicles need that extra boost they need to change something as although they have increased sales in recent years its nothing too significant, most people don’t get a green vehicle due to the lack of charge points in the UK meaning any change can only be a more positive thing.

Behold The Dutch Mini

The small and very British economy car known as the MINI is set to expand its production as the iconic car is well sought after. The once Austin Seven and Morris Mini looked to have made its last mark on the world, first starting production in 1959 it eventually looked like its time was running out in 2000 which confusingly it was, the last Mini as we know it left the factor, a red Cooper Sport. Thankfully this wasn’t the end however, BMW took over and brought the Mini to new heights.

The new BMW Mini or Mini Hatch as it’s known kept the same design, a three door hatchback with the same look and features as the original mini, although technically unrelated to the old car some people still regards it as your standard old Mini.

BMW have taken the mini to new heights as its hit the commercial mainstream and to combat that they have needed to increase production. BMW have announced that the new Mini will be built in Holland, the famous British car will now be built in Holland. As we let that sink in BMW have reinsured us that the plant in Oxford will still remain at the heart of Mini production, they claim that the reason for the move was to acquire extra space to meet strong demand.

Behold the Dutch Mini! VDL Nedcar is an automotive manufacturing company previously owned by Mitsubishi and Volvo. They have been at the heart of automobile production in the Netherlands since 1967 but have only ever dealt with Volvos, DAFs, Mitisubishi, Smarts and Citroens.

Not only will it move to Holland the production of the Mini will also be split between BMW and their Dutch partner VDL Nedcar. Let’s just cross our fingers and hope that they don’t change the Mini too much, the British touch is what so many people love about the car, hope BMW realise that!

Should Senior Drivers Be Labelled?

Do you think it should be the case that a driver should somehow alert you if they are elderly? It’s not as silly of a question as it may seem, AA conducted a survey which found that almost half the drivers that took part if they were made aware that a driver was elderly they would leave more space in front and avoid tailgating. Senior drivers have been the subject of controversy for quite a while now, there has been a few times I have seen an elderly driver going far too slow for the flow of traffic even to the point it become dangerous.
