What we need to know about the paper driving licence changes

What we need to know about the Paper driving licence changes

The paper driving licence which was introduced in UK in 1903, is going to be changed from the beginning of 2015. The changes were announced back in 2011, by the transport secretary (at that time) Justine Greening.

UPDATE: The new date for replacing the photo-card licence counterpart is 8 June 2015. So, starting from then, DVLA stops issuing the counterpart but you still need to keep your current photocard driving licence.

What will happen

The paper element of the driving licence also called the paper counterpart, will be phased out.

All the information held on the paper counterpart will be held online by the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency). A new electronic system was put in place of the paper tax disc.

All the changes to the driving licence, will save UK about £8m.

Here is what we need to know about the Paper driving licence changes

  • The changing process will start in January 2015
  • Changing the paper licence for a photo-card will be done with no charge
  • The status of your driving licence (points, penalties…etc) will not change
  • If you have a paper driving licence, you will need to wait till expires in order to change it
  • If you are caught with a invalid licence, you could face a £1000 fine

When the new system will be put in place, the DVLA will develop a new app which will allow organizations like transportation companies, car hire companies, …etc to see the info that is now on the paper counterpart.

5 Best Tourist Destinations in the World

Yorkshire Car Hire

I have seen many news items and PR stories about the Best Tourist Destinations in the World and they all seem to have their own spin on where you should go and what you should see. So, here is our 5 Best Tourist Destinations in the World in no particular order based on our own experiences.

Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, was home to the 2010 Fifa World Cup and part of it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a stunning, bustling city with lots to do and see.

For a change of pace you can go on the cable car to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain, where the scenery will take your breath away and the day to day troubles of life are put aside for a while. You can then return to the city find a bar where everyone gets lost in the rhythm of the salsa and dances until the early hours of the morning.

Sydney, Australia

Be a beach bum in the morning, tourist in the afternoon and culture vulture in the evening, in Sydney you can be whatever you want to be and still manage to blend in.

This city is often the first port of call for visitors and it rolls out a brilliant welcome mat. Sydney Opera House, Manly Beach and the Blue Mountains are just a snippet of the list of things to do here.

Cape Town, South Africa

The most southern point of Africa where you can see all of the sea life you could ever wish for, go to the top of Table Mountain and see the spectacular views in the world or enjoy a visit to one of the many vineyards and taste some of the best wines produced in the world today.

Robben Island, the historic prison where Nelson Mandela was held, is a ‘must do, for any visitor.

Paris, France

The ‘City of Romance’ Paris has more tourist attractions than anyone can see in one brief holiday. With a city based apartment and a couple of months you may get around to seeing some of the less well known treasures of this city and not just the Eiffel Tower and Louvre. Some of the restaurants here serve food and wine that will change the way you think about what you consume forever.

Yorkshire, England

Obviously not being biased at all… 🙂 Yorkshire has won the award for Europe’s Leading Tourist Destination twice in the past and was also the hosted the Grand Depart back in 2014.

Yorkshire features over 800 attractions, from World Heritage Sites to mining museums, ruined castles and abbeys, to hands on museums. You’ll find serene gardens and unique breweries, thrilling rides and industrial heritage.

From attractions and museums to sports and galleries, from the history-lover to the inquisitive child, there’s something for everyone.

What would make your list of the 5 Best Tourist Destinations in the World? Let us know, maybe they will make our list next time..

A Weekend With Eminem – Travelling Diary

In April Number One Son announces that he would like to go to the Eminem concert in Wembley in July. He declares he is determined to go and if he can´t find anyone to go with he will go on his own, The good thing about Eminem is that at the advanced age of 41 he in fact appeals to a couple of generations so I decide to look into the logistics of actually going along with him and making the trip his 18th birthday present.

First problem- my son, having been brought up in Spain, went to live in Manchester last year to study. I still live in Spain, so in fact neither of us are very near London or Wembley. The logistics of getting there and the prospective cost of doing so, also of staying in and getting around London are problematic to say the least. Lots of “googling” on forums and websites ensues, I am not familiar with big cities any more and my son has never been to London, so I want to find the easiest way of doing it on a limited budget. I book the tickets for the Saturday night and then there is no going back.

I first look for a flight to get me from Alicante to London. July is a busy month and it is hard to find a bargain. I discover that as Stansted seems a lesser used airport out of the centre of London, the flights are considerably cheaper than to Gatwick. I find a very, very cheap flight on the Friday night with Ryanair, only 49 euros, I book it, then look at how to get my son there. One possibility is by train, but as he has to change twice in London and he has never before been on a train alone in his life, I doubt that my nerves can stand the worry of wondering if he has got the connection ok. So I look at coaches, National Express has a coach with only one change at Victoria, only 22 pounds, and arriving at 12.15 am at Stansted, 40 minutes after my plane lands. This seems perfect so is duly booked. There is much moaning from Number One Son as it is a 7 hour journey, but to be honest it isn’t that much quicker by train, which is double the price, besides the complicated changes involved.

I then book us in for that night at the Premier Inn Stansted, fantastic value at only 38 pounds for a twin room. There is a shuttle bus leaving at 12.30 am and another at 13.00 to take us the mile to the hotel, so it seems to be ideal. Return flights are booked for both of us, my son will come back to Spain with me for a holiday, and again I find flights with Ryanair on the Monday morning for just under 50 euros. The good price for the flights means that I can book us extra leg room each, only ten euros with Ryanair and a must for my son as he is rather tall at 6 foot 4, and better for me as I am a very nervous passenger and like to sit at the front and not cramped in at the back.

The next question is getting from Stansted to Wembley, and then back again, as I am at that moment thinking we will probably stay at the Premier Inn. It´s time to look at public transport, but just the thought of using the tube sends me into a panic. I have lived in a tiny, sleepy village in Spain for 18 years and feel lost in big cities. Then I have the idea of renting a car to take us there and that means that from the concert I can go to Reading to visit an old friend and stay with them for the Saturday and Sunday night. This definitely proves to be my best idea.

I contact Indigo Car Hire, and they arrange a 2 day hire for me from the airport for 69.95 pounds, with only a 60 pounds deposit. I know with Indigo that the price I am quoted will be the final price and that there won´t be any hidden extras or surprises. They arrange it through Avis. I book parking at Wembley and we are all set.

The tickets finally arrive and there is much excitement. Finally, the 11th of July arrives and I am off to Stansted. The weather is cold and foggy, so foggy that the plane has to circle for about 30 minutes before landing. Not the best thing for a nervous passenger such as myself. Number One Son¨s coach arrives 2 hours late at 2.15 a.m and after an early morning Burger King we finally get a taxi to the hotel which is only a mile away.

The sun shines the next day and we set off back to the airport to collect the car. We have predictably got up late and Number One Son wants another Burger King. I have forgotten how expensive it is to feed a teenager, especially a very tall one. I ring Indigo to say we will be about an hour late in picking up the car. No problem. We arrive at the Avis desk and literally within 15 minutes we are driving the car away direction Wembley. We are careful to check the car over and find an extra scratch to what is marked on the paperwork, It is very important to check this as otherwise you could be blamed for the damage when you return the car. This is resolved instantly and off we go.

The concert is fantastic, although the support acts are not brilliant Eminem is electrifying and the atmosphere of 80, 000 people is overwhelming. Also overwhelming is the the price of 10 pounds for 2 bottles of beer. After I have picked myself up off the floor I pay it reluctantly as really I feel you cant be at an Eminem concert without having at least one drink. Good job I am driving and not able to drink more anyway. Insipid hot dogs are also 5 pounds, Burger King is looking more desirable by the second.

The concert finishes and one negative issue is the two hour wait to get out of the car park. This is mainly caused by police controls but it has to be said there are no problems with drunken or drugged up concert goers. The atmosphere is very relaxed and tranquil.

We drive to Reading where we stay at a friends house for the next two nights. I get a taste of English weather on the Sunday as I am sat in a lovely country pub garden one minute in the sun, and 5 minutes later it is raining cats and dogs and we have to come in. Ah but that’s what I miss. As an ex pat it is amazing how you can miss summer rain and country pubs. However, prices are better in Reading. Everything costs a fiver in London even a coffee and a coke. Living in Spain, that is a shock to the system.

Monday morning we are up early and off to catch our flight back to Alicante. There is a petrol station just outside the airport so I am able to return the car full and reclaim my petrol deposit. Not only that but we have our last fast food fix of a MacDonalds breakfast at the services. The car is diesel and I only have to replace 28 pounds of petrol. The car is returned with the minimum of fuss and again within five minutes we are in the airport and heading for the departure gates and three hours later we are in Spain.

What a great trip. The whole thing was definitely made easier by having a hire car instead of battling with unfamiliar public transport that for two people would have worked out more expensive, and much less convenient. Hiring a car makes your trip more comfortable, less stressful and in our case more cost effective. Hiring through a company like Indigo gives you peace of mind and the knowledge there will be no nasty expensive surprises when you collect your vehicle. Can´t wait for the next trip.

New Changes To Sixt Young Driver Fee UK

sixt young driver

One of the largest suppliers of rental cars in the UK, Sixt have recently changed their policies when it comes to hiring a car if you are under 25.

For a while now we have had a brilliant arrangement with them which meant our customers aged 23 & 24 could hire from any Sixt location without a young driver surcharge. People of 21 & 22 years of age could also rent a vehicle but there was a pretty hefty fee of £30 per day.

New Sixt Young Driver Fees UK

The Sixt young driver fees in the UK have changed which impacts drivers under 25 & means that although you can still hire a vehicle, anyone aged 21-24 will be liable for the daily charge which has increased from £30 to £36 per day.

This will mean a weeks rental for example will be £252 on top of the price of the rental itself.

Here is the Good News

Sixt are not the only supplier in the UK that offer car hire services for young drivers, we have other suppliers dotted around the country that will allow people as young as 21 to hire a car, and although there is a daily surcharge for anyone under 25, it is nowhere near as expensive as the fee mentioned above.

These suppliers also offer other deals which appeal to our younger customers like, low deposits, pay with a debit card and reduced excess amounts.

If you would like more information on the above or are looking to hire a car then please contact one of our experts, we are happy to chat to you online, answer your emails or speak to you direct on the phone on +44 (0)113 880 0748.

Knaresborough’s mystery legends and folklore

After visiting Harrogate last weekend, we had to continue the West Yorkshire adventure and the next stop was the nearby Town of Knaresborough. We were told about this amazing town, but no words would do justice to its beautiful landscapes.
Again, the car was provided by my colleagues from Indigo Car Hire and I must say that if you plan to visit the entire district we recommend to rent a car that suits you best…
So, let’s start another travelling diary file and explore Knaresborough’s mystery legends and folklore.

Located just a few miles from Harrogate, lies in a magnificent setting built in the gorge of the River Nidd: the lovely little town of Knaresborough. Standing supreme, high on the cliff top overlooking the river, is Knaresborough Castle and down the hill the Bebra Gardens are nestling at the foot of it.

Once a royal residence, it’s said that Richard II was once imprisoned in the keep. The town’s castle is alas now just a ruin, having been destroyed by Cromwell’s forces during the civil war. Today the ramparts provide a glorious view of the Victorian stone railway viaduct and houses inspiring many artists and photographers.

Bebra gardens, the beautifully tended public park located behind castle site, should not be missed. Particularly pleasant is the riverside walk from the gardens down to the viaduct, where you can admire a number of little cafes and restaurants overlooking the river. Boats can be hired on the river during the summer season.

This town has so many interesting sights, including a market square surrounded by historic streets, boating and a mixture of charming buildings and scenic picnic areas. You can visit here the oldest chemist shop in England in the picturesque market square, and enjoy a perfect afternoon in one of the cozy old world tea rooms. And all these shrouded in mystery legends and folklore.

One good example for this is on the opposite side of the river: Mother Shipton’s Cave and the Petrifying Well, England’s oldest tourist attraction, a curious place where the famous prophetess once lived and where you can still see things being turned to stone. Mother Shipton lived 500 years ago during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. As she grew older, her prophetic visions became known and feared throughout England.

As for the Petrifying Well, it is recorded that people travelled great distances to bathe here, as it was believed to have miraculous healing properties, as early as 1538. You’ll be able to see a whole host of everyday objects being turned to stone in the cascading waters of the Petrifying Well. Also visitors don’t forget to make a wish in the wishing well before they go.

The little cafes, great pubs, plenty of independent shops which are scattered throughout the town would make your day. There are boats available for hire, cycle tracks to follow and the riverside walks to be enjoyed. There are also some great annual events including a thriving Wednesday market, FEVA a vibrant 10 day Festival of Entertainment and Visual Arts (that celebrates everything musical and artistic.), the Great Knaresborough Bed Race ( a 3km run through town and river pushing a bed) and of course the Christmas Market.

Harrogate the home of flowers and beauty

Last weekend I got together with my friends and we had the idea to travel to a place we never been before in West Yorkshire. So we start researching the web for local attractions and we found out that nearby there is a small town famous for its beauty and its spa heritage. We were both intrigued and fascinated by the small town of Harrogate the home of flowers and beauty. So we started the preparations for our small journey.
When it comes to travelling in West Yorkshire there are plenty of possibilities: from public transportation system to car hire companies. Getting a car was very easy thanks to my colleagues from Indigo Car Hire and we’ve hit the road in short time.

With a cosmopolitan air, Harrogate is charming enough to steal at least a few days out of your vacation. Welcome to one of the UK’s most beautiful destinations! It’s a place where the old embraces the new, where festivals and traditional village shows blend with conferences and fancy events, bringing to town visitors all the year round. Harrogate Arts and Museums for example, have a fabulous summer events planned, with activities to suit all ages at the Royal Pump Room Museum and the Mercer Art Gallery.

Many come to see Harrogate’s fascinating shops in the Montpellier Quarter for antique treasures, high-end fashion, charming arts & crafts shops and bustling markets, others come to admire the splendid architecture or simply to relax in this “home of flowers and beauty”. Spring is a great time to visit when the flowers come into bloom and the Harrogate Flower Show brightens up the town. Lovers of local delicacies shouldn’t miss the Harrogate Specialty Food Show or the Great Yorkshire Show which take place every July, featuring food stalls, livestock and agriculture from around the region.

As I said, this characterful town is full of interesting attractions. The first thing to notice is that this place is alive! People are everywhere, both tourists and dwellers: on the streets, in the parks, at the beautiful restaurants and cafés or shops. They have plenty of things and places to see, Harrogate being one of Yorkshire’s most elegant destinations with handsome historic buildings and verdant gardens. It’s the perfect place to indulge in an antiques hunt or have lunch at the famous Betty’s tearoom, which was established in Harrogate in 1919, with queues still forming for their afternoon teas.

Discover the garden town of Harrogate and its fascinating spa heritage! You can have a picnic in the floral Valley Gardens or you should visit the luxurious Turkish baths. Harrogate is actually known as the historic spa town in North Yorkshire. It grew from a small village in the 1500’s when a spring at Tewitt Well was discovered to be rich in minerals. It became a popular destination for the rich and famous of Yorkshire and continues till nowadays. So make some time for pure relaxation in steam rooms, pool and a freezing plunge pool for braver visitors.

You could manage until here without a car, because it’s easy to walk between all the sightseeing that Harrogate has to offer. But from now on, discovering the district would demand a car. If you’re a tourist, it’s very handy to rent one, because it would be a great loss to be in Harrogate and don’t step into Knaresborough or Nidderdale, too.

Harrogate District is a great experience for a family holiday or a short break, giving you so many reasons to enjoy and relax in the plenty of green open spaces, atmospheric cafés, fine restaurants and heritage from the cozy towns or would hide you away from the daily bustle in the charming countryside with its luscious meadows.

Avis Saved Our Camping Trip

3 days before setting off on a camping trip to north Wales with my son my engine management light decided to pop up on the dashboard. As the car was still in warranty I wasnt too concerned until the garage told me they didnt have any courtesy cars available.

Working for Indigo car hire I knew exactly what to do, I got on the phone with Avis and booked a medium size hatchback for the week at a very reasonable cost of £115. I could have got it marginally cheaper elsewhere but I only hold a debit card and didnt want to leave a huge deposit. So all was well…

Until I got a call from my sister advising me that she and my niece and nephew would be joining us. The problem we had was space, the car I had booked would just about squeeze me, my son and all of our gear in. So we decided to take 2 cars. Yes the fuel cost would double but we would all be able to get there comfortably.

I arrived to collect my car on Saturday morning at around 7.45am, the branch wasnt due to open until 8am but the guys were there bright and early and didnt hesitate to open the doors and get me on the road earlier than expected. They said they had a choice of cars for me in that range, a VW Golf, Ford Focus or a Hyunadai I30. I asked if I could take a look at them to see which had the most space and explained why I was hiring a car. He said, tell you what, why dont you take this Citroen C4 Picasso thats just been cancelled. I was astounded by how helpful they were and the fact that he understood my situation and offered me a solution that would not only allow us all to travel together but would save us money.

He arranged the upgrade free of charge, showed me around the car, asked me to sign 1 piece of paper and sent me on my way. I was straight on the phone to my sister to tell her to unpack her car.

The next problem I encountered (sorry ladies) was probably something a lot of men have come across before, when I arrived to collect my sister it seems she had packed for 6 weeks not 5 nights, 8 pairs of shoes, hair straighteners and a make up bag the size of my bag of clothes for a camping trip…..

camping trip

This is where the Citroen came into its own, I just kept finiding more space when it seemed the car was full to brimming, little cubby holes and hidey spots all over the place. Eventually we found a place for everything and 2 adults, 3 kids and the whole of my sisters wardrobe set off for north Wales.

The car was lovely to drive and the 2 hour journey seemed effortless.

While we were there we had a few day trips out to Llandudno, Colwyn Bay and Prestatyn and the car didnt skip a beat, the kids were comfortable the air con worked a treat and it was easy to park in the busy seaside towns.

Thanks to Avis for making our trip a lot easier that it may have been, here is a big thumbs up from a future Indigo Car Hire expert…

London Set To Break International Visitor Record

London welcomed over 3.6 million overseas visits in the first three months of 2014, resulting in the best ever first quarter tourism numbers in the city’s history.

The figures published today from the latest International Passenger Survey show an 8.6 per cent increase on the same period last year, confirming that London is on track to welcome more visitors in 2014 than the 16.8 million that came to the city in 2013 – already a record-breaking year for the capital.

Tourist spending over the same period was £2.44 billion, a 14.6 per cent increase compared with the first quarter of last year.

The total spend in London’s tourism sector has gone up every quarter for the last two and a half years.

These promising figures come just one day after London was crowned the most popular tourist destination in the world by the respected MasterCard Global Cities Index report, putting the city ahead of Bangkok and Paris.

According to the report, London is projected to host 18.7 million international visitors in 2014 – 300,000 more visitors than the 2013 top destination city Bangkok.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, welcomed the figures: “After a record-breaking year for international visitors in 2013, London is on course to see even more people flock to our great city in 2014.

“Yesterday London was crowned the most popular tourist destination in the world. Today these fantastic visitor figures underline the phenomenal destination that London is, combining world-class culture with constant innovation, and of course our stunning landmarks that are recognised around the world.”

The IPS figures show that visitors are coming to London in ever increasing numbers to attend the capital’s calendar of world-class exhibitions, visit the city’s famous landmarks, enjoy its diverse culture, and watch major sporting events including last week’s Tour de France which saw one million people take to the capital’s streets.
