How Old Do You Have To Be To Hire A Car?
Keep an eye on extra charges for young drivers. By Alamo United States, the minimum age for driving a car is 18 years old, but drivers aged 18 to 20 years must pay a surcharge of 49.37 US dollars per day. This supplement cannot be settled in advance and must be paid at time of pickup.
The minimum age for hiring a car is 18 years old, but drivers between the age of 18-24 are typically required to pay a daily young driver surcharge. This is usually to be paid at the time of pick up.
Here is a breakdown of the age to rent a car & the typical requirements
- 21+ years of age, although limited locations allow 18+.
- Under 25s will be subject to a daily surcharge.
- Have held your licence for more than a year
- Points or convictions may make hiring a car more complicated.

WHAT TYPES OF CARS CAN I HIRE AS A YOUNG DRIVER?
Typically as a young driver the vehicles that you will be able to hire include anything up to a compact size vehicle for example:

Minimum rental ages by country
The rental age varies from one location to another, and even within the same country you may be able to hire a car at a particular age at one airport, but not another.
Taking the UK for example, some suppliers will allow drivers as young as 21, however most others will only allow 23 or above. These as you would expect typically come at a daily surcharge cost of £30-40 a day in the UK.

Can I hire a car as a young driver without a surcharge?
A young driver surcharge fee can range up to as much as £39/p day if you go with an expensive supplier, so it’s important to not only find the lowest rental charge, but the lowest price combined with the excess fees.
Please keep in mind that all of the prices on our website do not include any young driver fees; this is in addition to the cost of the rental. If you are under the age of 25 then you must contact us directly to find out the options.
If you are between the ages of 23-24 then depending upon the location, we can offer young driver car hire with a small additional fee. This is subject to availability and depends on where you are wanting the vehicle from.
