The only restriction when hiring with a debit card is that you cannot rent premium / luxury vehicles – other than that you can take your pick at any of the vehicles available:

We have quite a few services here that we can offer in conjunction with a debit card hire:

Low deposit car hire – on most of these vehicles we can offer a very low deposit of only 2000 MAD (Just £160 / €185), which is just held on your debit card on arrival and released back to you on return. This is much more affordable than a lot of our contemporaries, many of whom have deposits up to 30000MAD (around £2500!).

Young driver car hire – we can offer debit card rentals to anyone over the age of 21 with a licence held for at least a year. Young driver fees are also minimal to none at this location too, so don’t expect to have to bear a huge cost just for being under 25.

As part of being able to hire a car in these locations with the use of a debit card then we had to agree to some conditions in regards to which debit cards we were allowed to accept. There are many locations across the globe where we have managed to arrange a deal that will allow us to take a debit card given that it meets certain restrictions. We have announced this several times before but one of the major difficulties when it comes to debit card car hire the card typically has to be in your name which means the name that is printed on your card must match your identification when you produce it at the counter.

Option 1
When hiring a car without a credit card, this supplier will hold a deposit on your debit card for the full amount of your excess, this is not taken from your account but frozen until the vehicle is returned.

Option 2

This is obviously a better option than above if you need access to the funds in your account while on holiday.

We have recently had an issue with a customer that booked a car to collect from Heathrow Airport, the customer did not have a credit card so we booked her a vehicle with a supplier that we know accepts debit cards.

There are certain restictions when using debit cards which can be found here and her card passed, the booking was accepted and the customer was looking forward to arriving and collecting her car.

The problem arose when the customer arrived to collect her vehicle, the debit card provided by her bank did not have her name on it. Luckily the supplier allowed the customer to leave a cash deposit to secure the vehicle, which is a very rare thing to happen but as an Indigo customer they trusted her.

This is the first time we have come across Debit Cards Without A Name so needed to look into it further. Apparently some banks in North Amercia, Canada and Malaysia do provide debit cards that do not have the account holders name on it.

These cards can still be accepted by some suppliers but they will need proof that the card belongs to the person intending to hire the vehicle.

There is only really one way to prove that the card belongs to the hirer and that is to provide a letter of authenticity or a bank statement showing the same account details along with the holders name and address. These details must match the information on the driving licence and passport.

We have now changed our qualifying criteria to include asking our customers if their name is physically on the card, rather than asking if it is in their name as we did before.
