The First Motorway Pub Set To Open

On the M40 junction 2 at Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire the first ever motorway pub is set to open after the Government consider lifting alcohol sales at service stations. The pub is going to be a JD Wetherspoon’s pub which will be open 24 hours a day 7 days a week and able to serve alcohol from 8am to 1am the first of said to be many pubs that will be rolled out across service stations in the UK. The licence has been granted and it’s all set to go ahead.

Wetherspoon’s are said to be delighted by this and strongly defend the decision to open the branch, the £2 million pub will create a total of around 50 jobs. Two weeks ago Harvester came over the same criticism when it opened a restaurant on the M1 in Leicestershire that served alcohol with their dining service. Many are understandably outraged at the changes to being able to sell alcohol some way or another at service stations saying its just promoting drink driving and making it harder for drivers to avoid the temptation of more than a single pint.

The pub will “put temptation in front of drivers” the brake and the alcohol health alliance has said, its also been heavily criticised by Carol Whittingham founder of Campaign Against Drinking and Driving. It has shook many as to why the government have allowed such a move, surely it can only cause more harm than good, 90% of the time you are at a service station with a vehicle meaning a majority will have to stick to a one pint limit. This also comes after recent changes to making the drink driving conviction even stricter, bit of contradiction going on by the government there isn’t it?

This surely must be a bad move on the Governments part, more harm than good will come out of this.
