What cars are in the top 5 endangered classic cars countdown?
Austin Allegro
The Austin Allegro was once a popular feature in British culture, when it first came out it wasn’t a desirable model as many felt the style was unappealing for such a high price tag and low quality car, it however shot to fame with collectors in the last 10 or so years but is now seeing its slow demise. Between 1973 and 1982 642,340 Austin Allegro’s where built now there is a mere 291 left on roads in the UK to date.
Princess
A great classic car of today once featured on Top Gear by Jeremy Clarkson, a bold style with a roomy interior being powered by a six cylinder engine. The princess had such promise when it was launched back in 1975 but never lived up to potential as many didn’t like the unsporty design of a so called sporty car. It lasted until 1982 with around 224,949 built and only has an unfortunate 121 remaining on the UK roads today.
Hillman Avenger
The Hillman was a great car with an identity crisis, first named the Hillman it eventually became a Chrysler and then further more turned into a Talbot. The Hillman was popular in its time and spent a good amount of time in the lime light eventually being notched off its mount by the better Ford Escort. The Avenger was also the car of the 1978 Scotland World Cup Football team, it was in production from 1970 to 1981 and built 638,631 vehicles in that time yet it only has a small 369 remaining on the UK road today.
Vauxhall Viva
A solid top 10 seller in the UK a cost effective cheap run around was a popular choice with many. The viva was an all-round great car of its time lasting 16 years in the factory producing 1,516,792 cars arguably the most popular of the dyeing cars of today, the dates the Viva was in production was 1963-1979. There are just a little 1057 left on UK roads which are more than any in our countdown but considering the amount sold its surprising there are only that many left.
Rover SD1
The Rover only spent 9 years in production but is one of the best classics a fast, comfortable drive with excellent dynamics practical for just about everyone. Its downfall was its reliability the build quality was better put together by a child however today it’s a great classic as almost all the parts are readily available and there are many specialist and club support. The Rover SD1 built 303,345 of the model between the years of 1977 and 1986 and only has around 310 left on UK roads today.
