A good day for most Croatians as many took to the street of the capital Zagreb to celebrate there recent \u201csuccess\u201d in joining the EU. Croatia have become the 28th member of the European Union, this is particularly emotional for most Croatians as it comes just after a brutal war for the fight of independence stretching nearly two decades. The change saw the removal of customs at the borders with Slovenia.<\/p>\n
The European Union is an economic and political union between the 28 members that are located primarily in Europe established back in 1993, The European parliament is elected every 5 years by citizens of the EU.<\/p>\n
Croatia is the first new member of the European Union since Bulgaria and Romania joined back in 2007, many oppose the move however including other EU countries as Croatia has its own huge economic troubles. Two thirds of Croatians voted in favour of the move, some of the EU leaders where quite on the fence about the decision due to the corruption in Croatia and the organised crime rate which worried many of those already in the EU. The EU however have given Croatia a clean bill of health.<\/p>\n
On the other side of the argument some Croatians are also worried about joining the EU down to what has happened to Greece and Spain despite their various bail outs. Despite this the celebrations say otherwise, there were several happy Croatians in the streets of Zagreb as the membership became effective at midnight with several fireworks and parties spanning into the night. <\/p>\n
